To think £85 a week is extortionate

Pollypanda · 07/11/2018 12:57

For a cleaner.

My house is not large, it’s a new build 4 bed with 2 bathrooms and a downstairs loo. We would only need 2 of the bedrooms cleaned as the others are largely unused.

I have been quoted £85 a week for a basic house clean (2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen, living room and stairs)

AIBU to think this is obscenely high? I was expecting about 40-50.

For context I live in the south, but not London or the south east.

That sounds like a rip off. ' They don't leave till standard' bwahahahaha. I had a cleaner who left cos she said she couldn't be at mine 'all night' she had guests coming....

SundayLunchHappy · 08/11/2018 17:54

Mm quoted me £55 pw or £60 for fortnightly cleans. I live in a two bed terrace in the midlands. Also £85 initial clean. I quite enjoyed listening to their rep try and justify the price before waving her out the door. Bonkers.

flumpybear · 08/11/2018 17:55

I'm East Midlands and we pay £28 for a basic clean, 4 people clean it and they take around 45 -1 hour

For that sort of money is want a very deep clean in all rooms, literally everything washed and scrubbed, under beds and sofas cleaned, all surfaces dusted and tiles cleaned thoroughly, all floors washed ... literally everything scrubbed clean

We were quite something like £50 from Molly Maid about 6-7 years ago and they said each visit they deep clean 1 room and basic clean the rest - we passed!

flumpybear · 08/11/2018 17:55

3 bed two bathroom bungalow by the way

Onemorefireball · 08/11/2018 17:57

I have the same size house as you in terms of bedrooms and my cleaner used to do 2 hours a week at £10 an hour. I would say there were bits that could have done with being done and weren't, so she maybe could have done with 3 hours.

NameChanger22 · 08/11/2018 18:01

Even £10 an hour sounds an awful lot of money for cleaning, when you consider that other low skilled work is paid around £7.50 an hour. Even skilled work often pays less than £9 an hour. Why is cleaning paid more?

triwarrior · 08/11/2018 18:02

It all depends how big your house is. I pay $95 each week but my house is 2400 square feet. What's your square footage? I think that's more important than the number of rooms.

Cambalamb · 08/11/2018 18:03

My friend cleans for £12 ph and does the whole house in 2 hrs incl. bathrooms, floors etc.

redcaryellowcar · 08/11/2018 18:05

I think it depends on what you want them to do. I think agencies/ more diligent cleaners will be there longer and rotate tasks like window cleaning, if ironing is included that will obviously take longer, our last cleaners just did two hours for us, three bed house with one en suite, and in that time they cleaned all bathrooms/ toilets, the kitchen, dusted quickly and hoovered. They could have been here at least another two hours, and would still be finding things to do, but we couldn't afford to have them as much as I/ we would like. For info we paid £12 p hr in south east.

triwarrior · 08/11/2018 18:09

That should read £95 each week.

Parker231 · 08/11/2018 18:13

We pay £85 a week - 5 bed/3 bath CEntral London. Had the same cleaner for years - she does everything - Hoover, clean, laundry, ironing (there I s very little as we tumble dry almost everything, changes the beds, puts away the online shopping delivery, you name it and she does it. She’s amazing and it means we don’t have to do anything (that was the reason we got a cleaner - we like a clean house but don’t have any time to do it ourselves).

Scarriff · 08/11/2018 18:14

London 4 bed house here. Weekly clean 4 hours at £45. Includes ironing bedlinen and remaking beds. Cleaner not great at dusting but floors are clean as are bathrooms.

Panmum14 · 08/11/2018 18:14

I think that’s very high. I live in a 5 bedroom 3 bathroom house and my cleaner does 3 hours every week. She also does my ironing and she charges £45 a week.

MarshaBradyo · 08/11/2018 18:16

Mine feels like a lot when I read these

£48 for 4 hours, 4 bed in London weekly
She does an excellent job however - just cleaning though

Chickoletta · 08/11/2018 18:18

Extortionate! I have a house the same size and pay £26 for 2 hours.

autumnboys · 08/11/2018 18:21

It sound steep to me! We pay £33 a week in the south east for the whole house (similar size to yours).

underneaththeash · 08/11/2018 18:21

That's ridiculous. We pay about the same for our 6 bed 5 bathroom house (plus I'm really fussy and get them to do lots of extra jobs too).

Donna1001 · 08/11/2018 18:42

I was quoted by Molly Maid, they wanted to charge me for the mileage from the office to my house.

Not on your nelly, Molly!

Anythingforacatslife · 08/11/2018 18:45

I pay £25 for almost the same as you, we have one less bathroom.

lynxca16 · 08/11/2018 18:50

It sounds v. expensive to me - I pay £12 per hour (x2 hrs) each week for 3 bed semi and once a month for an extra hour. I do DS's bedroom and the other is just a guest bedroom but £85 per week is too much.

Palaver1 · 08/11/2018 18:53

MM are a franchise your paying for the pinny lol fantastic services have been okay but ..I confess I love cleaning so only get them in for a real spring deep clean
.

Parker231 · 08/11/2018 19:02

As I posted earlier I pay £85 and I am getting a bargain for what my cleaner does each week. It’s a big house, over four floors and takes two half days of hard work by my cleaner to get everything done. I appreciate that I’m also paying a premium for Central London where there aren’t enough good independent cleaners to supply the demand.

Sb74 · 08/11/2018 19:12

I got a quote from Molly Maid a few years ago. It was high for the time and they said they send two cleaners and will be in and out as quickly as possible as if that was a selling point. I thought the opposite and that I would rather they be there for a set time and feel I’m getting my
moneys- worth. I would stay away personally.

Burratorchildhood · 08/11/2018 19:23

I pay £44 for 4 hours so £11 an hour. I pay my cleaner directly and she is fab. Agencies are more expensive I think.

Burratorchildhood · 08/11/2018 19:24

I'm in the south east m25 belt
