Lunch box police

Just had a phone call from school and asked if I could go in for a chat regarding dd lunch. She is 6 and in year 2, being in key stage 1 she gets universal free school meals which she has everyday apart from Wednesday. Wednesday is always a roast and the gravy the meat is cooked in gives her an upset stomach. I am irritated as the teacher has looked in dd lunch bag this morning which I feel is out of order if I'm total honest. So the offending item which she has had the last few Wednesday's as there is 10 in a pack is a mini Pick Up Bar. Photo attached for size she has just the 1 biscuit not the 3 that is the actual serving size. Along with the pick up she has a cheese and ham mini wrap with lettuce, cucumber and red onion in, 6 cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, a pot of hummus and grapes which are cut into 1/4s. I was a bit taken aback just now on the phone so didn't say much at all, now I need to know what to say at by meeting this afternoon. I would seriously think the school had more to worry about than a flamming fun size biscuit. For back ground we moved into this area recently and dd has only been at the school since the September and such rule was mentioned during induction day in July.

I’m angry on your behalf.

I’d also add to the pp that you want to know who rummaged through her food. We’re they wearing gloves, a hair cover and an apron to prevent cross contamination?

A pick up bar doesn’t compare to bloody chocolate sponge and chocolate custard!

(Which, by the way, you can buy in Morrisons and is the stuff of dreams.)

golddustwomen · 07/11/2018 13:46

I've sent my dd with 2 chocolate malted milks in her lunchbox today... TWO Shock

This is crazy though! Your dds lunch sounds lovely and heathy.

JanetLovesJason · 07/11/2018 13:50

There was a girl in my class at school would only eat honey sandwiches 🥪 White bread of course. Had them every day for lunch for years. Plus a carton of ribena.

BackToBeingMe · 07/11/2018 13:50

Just getting ready to walk up to school now, we only live round the corner. So tempted to take the pack of chocolate Hob Nobs I have in the cupboard as suggested above but don't think I would have the balls to offer them around. Anyway wish me luck and I will be back in a bit to update on my spanking.

That bar has 12 grams of sugar do not bad. It’s not like you’ve sent her in with a twix, a mars bar and a flake. How many grams of sugar does the school pudding have?

Topseyt · 07/11/2018 13:51

Good luck. Have you taken your hard hat for protection?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/11/2018 13:52

And did she develop rickets Janet?

NO! She didn't! (Well - I'm prepared to bet a superbly well-trained cocker spaniel that she didn't. The only other thing I have of value is DH, and trust me, you wouldn't want him . . . he has Habits . . . Grin)

Mibby16 · 07/11/2018 13:53

@Schadenfreude good idea! Clearly Hot Gruel would be a H&S risk but I shall try cold in a non-plastic, unbreakable bottle :)

PhilomenaButterfly · 07/11/2018 13:54

There are chocolate malted milks?! Where can I get them?! Hmm

PhilomenaButterfly · 07/11/2018 13:54

That was supposed to be a Shock

Hissy · 07/11/2018 13:55

Stay calm, remember you have done nothing 'wrong' here

They have tbh. You are an adult and can make a decision that once a week you can add a pick up bar to her lunch box

THEY however serve pudding and custard to the kids EVERY DAY

Bloody school lunches, my ds didn't even know the word for pudding until he started school! Then it becomes an essential part of lunch!!

Tissunnyupnorth · 07/11/2018 13:55

Let us know the outcome.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/11/2018 14:04

Pholimena - Chocolate malted Milks are the sort of biscuit the Gods only dream of.

They really are SUPERB, and yet, because they have "milk" in their name, and a picture of cows on them, you can persuade yourself that they are a calcium-enriched health food, and that eating an entire packet is doing you nothing but good!

PhilomenaButterfly · 07/11/2018 14:07

Thanks Schadenfreude, they're now on my shopping list! Although I should probably eat all the chocolate shortbread and mincemeat puffs first. 😆

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/11/2018 14:10

You will not regret it Philomena I can help you with the chocolate shortbread and mincemeat puffs if you like - no worries

Sexnotgender · 07/11/2018 14:11

I’m intrigued as to why the meeting will take so long!

flumpybear · 07/11/2018 14:12

Go in with your ammo

  1. Everything was healthy and teaches unhealthy snack in a small proportion (it's not like you're stuffing her fill of chocolate cake and sugary custard lol!)
  2. Mention the irony
  3. Ask her if she handled your child's food with gloves and a hair net on if not why not?

4 it may be a nuts thing just check the website first

Pissedoffdotcom · 07/11/2018 14:15

We are having issues with DD currently because she has been told at school that things like chocolate or crisps etc are bad for you. If I offer her something she will say 'but it's bad for you' which really infuriates me. Whatever happened to balance??? We are now trying to counter that which is hard work.

The justification that some kids get sent in with shit lunch boxes isn't on either imo. Pull those parents in & explain nutritional balance to them - or take it further if other issues come to light - don't start a group of 5/6 year olds down a path of associating food with 'good' or 'bad'

flumpybear · 07/11/2018 14:15

Oh you're already in .... report back I'm sure you'll have time to waste before collecting Wink

homeishere · 07/11/2018 14:18

It’s a daft rule. But there was a boy who would always come on trips with a packed lunch of two full sized double decker bars and a large can of full sugar coke. I ended up taking his lunch from him and giving him mine most trips (unless there was a spare school lunch for him). His mum never saw sense.

I agree that a small biscuit is fine, I don’t know how schools have the manpower or time to police this.

SleepWarrior · 07/11/2018 14:36

Maybe it's the wrapping in foil that you're going to be told off for! If they root through the lunchboxes they probably want everything easily identifiable. Very OTT though.

KatnissMellark · 07/11/2018 14:47

Hope your bottom isn't too sore OP Shock

Leeds2 · 07/11/2018 14:49

It must be something other than a Pick Up! bar which is causing this angst. Most things could surely have been dealt with over the phone.

I would be cross if someone had opened my child's wrapped sandwich too. There is surely absolutely no need to do that.

Liverbird77 · 07/11/2018 14:51

A ban on nuts is totally understandable. Policing lunchboxes is not. It is surely up to the parents to decide what to feed their child. I am a secondary school teacher and I always bring my own lunch in because school dinners are crap.

MulticolourMophead · 07/11/2018 15:19

I also would be cross if anyone had opened the wrapped food. Why would my child be expected to eat it after someone has handled it, and likely without gloves and not washing hands.
