Real Christmas tree or fake?

My fake one is scraggly and so I am torn this year...Real or fake?
I know fake is more economical in the long run but I'm tempted to go for real this year then buy a good fake in the sale.

What about other mn...what do you prefer?

Real or nothing.

lazymare · 07/11/2018 07:56

Real. It supports business where you live not a plastic factory thousands of miles away.

In all my years I think we had a real tree once when my sister was still really young. The fake tree from the next year is still going strong at least 30 years later. And I'm sure it will last another good few years as it gets stored well.

In my house our fake tree is at least 10 years old, if not older.

As lovely as the smell is just burn a candle or oils. Save the mess and hassle of needles.

MakeAHouseAHome · 07/11/2018 08:01

Real on the Dinning room, a very very authentic fake one in the hall (cost a bomb but worth it to look real!)

NorthernRunner · 07/11/2018 08:03

We had a small fake tree once just to go in the hallway, im talking 2ft and the cats kept biting and weeing on it, needless to say it went straight to the bin. They don’t do that with real trees 🤷🏻‍♀️

thismeansnothing · 07/11/2018 08:09

Real every time. Been and picked ours a few weeks ago at the farm which was a fun morning as a family. Go back in December to chop it down. £30 for a 7-8footer and the smell ♥️
The price of an artificial one for the size we'd need is eye watering. Plus we have no where to store it

Titsywoo · 07/11/2018 08:10

Fake. I bought two off local selling sites - a 6ft one for £10 and a 7ft one for £15. Both really good quality trees that had probably been used for many years and will continue to be used by us for a long time. The tree we had when I was little is still used by my parents (not sure why someone said they would end up in landfill in 2 years?!). A really full fake tree looks better imo and the decorations sit better on it. Plus the dropping needles do my head in. It's better financially mainly though.

What happens with real ones after Christmas is over?

speakout · 07/11/2018 08:16

What happens with real ones after Christmas is over?

Ours are recycled- picked up by council and turned into compost, used in council parks and recreational space.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 07/11/2018 08:16

Fake due to allergies. Slimline due to space constraints. Mismatched tacky baubles theough choice:o

I don’t give a flying fuck if some snobs on here think it’s real or nothing. As another poster said, the health of my family trumps anything else.

PaintingOwls · 07/11/2018 08:16

We have a fake one but it's on the way out - wonky, looks more and more sad each year. When we get rid of it we'll start getting real trees as I am trying to reduce the amount of plastic we have in the house.

NorthernRunner · 07/11/2018 08:16

lucky my local council collect them for free

drinkygin · 07/11/2018 08:17

For those who have real trees- how early do you put them up? I’m considering a real tree this year but usually decorate around the 1st December (although I usually take it down shortly after Boxing Day!). Will a real tree last?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 07/11/2018 08:17

Also, I believe a study was done a few years ago and the difference environmentally was very little, with fake trees being slightly better due to potential longevity of use.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 07/11/2018 08:18

Fake here - can't stand the smell of pine, it always makes me think of cheap toilet cleaner liquid. If it's just the smell you want, I would suggest these I use the spiced orange ones in my tree, but they do a wide range of scents, including several 'pine' ones. I find two Sven my room for the whole Christmas period and then I lay them on the radiators where the heat brings out the scent for another few weeks.

NorthernRunner · 07/11/2018 08:32

We buy our tree the second weekend of December and I take it down New Year’s Eve. Not because it’s dead but because I can’t stand having decorations up in January.
We always pop a bit of lemonade in the stand and that Keeps the tree going 😊

drinkygin · 07/11/2018 08:44

Thanks northernrunner- I do love a real tree but I’m worried about the practicalities

LuckyAmy1986 · 07/11/2018 08:59

Thanks - that sounds very handy. Never had a real one before!

AnonyMousee · 07/11/2018 09:01

Fake. Better for the environment, no nasty sharp pins on the floor, cheaper (than buying new every year) you can get fake ones with built in lights to make decorating a lot easier too.

PoisonousSmurf · 07/11/2018 09:07

Love a real tree, but don't get it until the very last minute, as it's cheaper and it lasts longer Grin
But we do put up the outside lights the first weekend of December.

PoisonousSmurf · 07/11/2018 09:09

And when the celebrations are finished, the tree is put outside and when it starts to dry up in May, we cut it up for firewood for the following winter. Double use and no waste!

ShalomJackie · 07/11/2018 09:15

Get a Balsam Hill fake one in the sale!

LittleRen · 07/11/2018 09:19

We have already had massive real Xmas trees but last year I was pregnant and due in January so I wanted something easier. Went for a balsam hill with scentsicles and everyone thought it was real, I loved it.. we put it up the very end of November and it looked perfect when it came down at the start of jan. My real trees have always lasted as we get them from a farm where they are grown but they do start to look pretty sad by the end of December and I get sick of them.

Definitely recommend balsam hill... well worth the price.

I do like going for real Christmas tree but we compromise by having a small real one in our hallway or dining room!

PepsiLola · 07/11/2018 09:22

I would love a real tree mainly for the smell, but we can't due to allergies etc

We bought an amazing 8ft tree a few years ago, it is amazing and full. Every year when getting it out I always forgot how nice it is

Sitranced · 07/11/2018 09:24

No tree, I find both a bit of a waste really. We decorate the apple tree in the garden instead.
