AIBU for not wanting this house?

We are looking at houses to buy. We are very specific on the area due to the school for our children ( they are already at school, we just don't want to be too far from it ). As we are so specific we have a very limited choice.

The house came up for sale which is almost perfect, well within our price range and have a potential.

I have done some research and found out that the immediate neighbour was found guilty of having indicident images and now is on the sex offender list. I am now adamant to this house and don't want to even think of it, my OH thinks I am unreasonable and we should really consider it.

AIBU to stick to my guns and reject this house?

No. Home is a place to relax. How could you ever relax and let your kids play out?

How limited a choice is limited? Is it a case of wait a month or two and you might find something that needs a bit more work or isn’t quite as spacious, but would still work - or is it so limited that this is the only house you’re likely to find in your price range in this area?

YANBU. I’m assuming they were indecent images of children? Because it isn’t illegal to have indecent images of consenting adults. Why would you even consider moving next door to a paedophile?!!!

I wouldn't want that house either. It's understandable why you wouldn't. The only problem is that you don't know who is or isn't looking at these disgusting images if they haven't been caught.

However if, like you, I knew that the immediate neighbour had been caught I wouldn't buy it. Some may disagree with me though.

How on earth did you know enough about the neighbour to find that out?

That's yours and your children's safe haven, how could you ever relax, let the children play in the garden/paddling pool in the summer knowing what the man next door has been convicted of?
I would stay put and stop thinking about the house.

YANBU OP. It would be a dealbreaker for me too.

We are looking at around 5 specific streets where we like the look of the houses. There are houses for sale but not what we want. I guess we have to wait for a bit longer

I'm not sure how comfortable I would be knowing my neighbour was on the sex offenders register for crimes involving children (I assume they were against children because as another poster pointed out having indecent images of adults isn't a crime).

I would be very wary but that said, how can any of us be sure what strangers and neighbours are up to?

@DerelictWreck, by complete accident. All the charges relate to their prior address, they is no link to this address at all.

@CheesyMother, yes, he lives at this address as this is the address where they moved afterwards

I don't think I could buy it then... which I know is somewhat floored logic, as you could easily be living next to someone similar and just not realise it (because they moved after conviction or they haven't been caught yet), but somehow that seems very different.

How long ago did he move there? And do you know if he owns or is renting? If you think he might move on relatively soon and this really is your dream house then it is a slightly different situation, but otherwise I'd definitely be leaving it.

I know that we are more relaxed about something we don't know but at this situation I have the knowledge. Those offends include children alongside others.

Thank you for your support, my point exactly is that I will not want my children to spend any time in the garden and I will be constantly checking is anyone is looking at them from the next door, and as they get older, I would be constantly worried what if this person knocks on the door while kids are home alone.

You are being so, so reasonable. Our job as parents is to protect our kids, and knowing moving next to a sex offender paedophile is not protecting your kids.

@MrsStrowman, there was an article in the local newspaper about the court hearing and the person pleading guilty a few years back. Unfortunately, I can not tell any more details as it might be outing but the connection is too strong for me to ignore it.

Did the article give the person's name and address? Otherwise, how are you so sure?

I am probably the lone voice that would say buy it.

Would you buy it if he weren't next door? If yes, then knowledge is power. You are pre-warned and can put everything in place to safeguard your children and live peacefully. (High fencing, obscuring windows etc)

I think.... hmmm, its a hard one that. But my gut instinct is you can get round this somehow and end up with a secure, bargain house in the right area.

Ah ok, if you know the info is accurate it's whether you can live with it or not. Ultimately there could be all sorts going on with any neighbour, loads of convictions even and you wouldn't know, but if you can't get your head around it, it won't make for a happy home life.
