DD4 always complains that her food is too hot even when its the first plate put out. Its a struggle to get her food to a temperature she will eat while also putting the rest of the familys meals out on time. So I juggle the food and have to faff around with hers to make sure we all have food we can eat at the same time.

I was tidying the living room and putting away things we dont use at the moment. We have several of those mini fans - usb driven ( £2.99 from home bargains)which were a godsend during the heatwave. Just before I took them upstairs to store I suddenly realised that they can cool other things beside bodies. So off I went into the kitchen and made some toast - popped the fan on while I sorted the butter and marmalade and by the time I was back the toast was completely cold. ( I like cold toast BTW)
BINGO!

Last nights dinner was so easy - plate up everyones food at the same time - put DDs plate beside the fan and by the time the rest of the plates were on the table hers was at the right temperature for her to start eating . And i could just get on with dinner like a normal person.

I know these things are temporary - DD is the youngest so Ive been there with the older DCs but just for once I feel ahead of the game.

No I am truly a genius. Whole ds was going through this stage I kept a plate and a bowl in the freezer to instantly cool food.
Still waiting to hear back from Nobel ...

I used a mini fan for a while, I still throw it in my bag and look like the crazy one bringing it out in restaurants

Flashingbeacon I did the plates in freezer trick too Grin

I like the fan idea though!

Inspired, but too much faffing for me. I just plate up DDs first and stick it in the fridge while I do the others. Shes at school now so getting better with hotter food and waiting for it to cool.

When she was a little one her preference for room temperature food was a godsend, no warming bottles during the night so I am not complaining now.

Serve everything with a huge scoop of ice cream?

Everybody does jam roly-poly or chocolate gateau with ice cream, but how about a full Sunday roast with stuffing, veg and gravy - and ice cream? Lasagne - with ice cream? Prawn biryani - with ice cream? Why ever are these not more popular dishes? I think you may have a fight on your hands for that genius crown, OP....

My DD is that same. I just put the hot food in front of her and ignore the whinging. You're a lovely mum and I'm mean!

We only had this with soup, to which the answer is ice cubes - the genius answer if you tend to use certain brands of tinned soup is to make the ice cubes out of the same flavour so it doesn't dilute the soup when it melts.

Genius. All of these ideas. I'm taking notes.

I put ds bowl of food in cold, shallow water in the sink while I plate up everyone else's :)

Wish I'd thought of the icecubes in soup one.

This is genius. I put Dd's in a bowl of water on the windowsill.

I chuck ds & dd's food in the fridge, wait 5 mins then serve mine and dp's food, everything comes out at the right temp

Not to be po faced but you’re not meant to put hot stuff in the fridge as it heats up the overall temperature, are you?

I used to freeze fruit puree to put in porridge for my middle child, for this very reason

Report
cantstopfreaking · 06/11/2018 13:17

I put mine on the windowsill in front of the wide open window.
I’ve even been known to pop the whole plate outside for 5 mins when I’ve been desperate!

@Shirleyphallus I think OP just means put the plate in the fridge before serving up?

Report
Shirleyphallus · 06/11/2018 15:04

@gramola wasn’t talking about OP, meant posts like this:

“I chuck ds & dd's food in the fridge, wait 5 mins then serve mine and dp's food, everything comes out at the right temp”

Sorry to seem stupid but why cant you just let them eat it when it has cooled down? Or let them blow on it - or is that seen as too crass these days 🤣

I used to stick Ds's food in the fridge too, plate his first, fridge. Plate the rest and his would be just right.

This. we were told to blow on our food until it was cool enough to eat, or just wait for it to cool down.

YABU. Using the word genius is really offensive, both to geniuses (genii?) and non-geniuses.

YABU for being able to feed ALL your family at the same time - my children take it in turns to eat, once every two days.

YABU to spend £2.99 (more than some people earn in a WEEK!) on fripperies such as fans.

YABU to eat cold toast.

Get dd to serve the dinners then by the time everyone has said, can I have another drink, more cheese, tomato sauce etc, she sits down to eat, hers will be cold. Well mine always is anyway!
