To think this comment is racist

Speculating on a black family on a tv show, someone said 'I just want to know where they've got their money from, the dad doesn't look like he does a job that pays really well.' He was a black man, relaxing in his garden, with a baseball cap on.
This is modern racism, it's not name calling, it's not signs on boarding house windows. It's not even a conscious thing for many people, I honestly don't believe that the woman who said this really even thought about her ludicrous idea of 'what wealth looks like.'
God the world is depressing sometimes.

I think most people are saying that it could be racism but that equally it might not. Just because the person happens to be black does not mean that it's racist.

WorraLiberty · 05/11/2018 18:17

So what did you say to the person who said this, OP?

ClaudiaWankleman · 05/11/2018 18:17

I think the fact you instantly assumed the comment was made because the guy was black says a lot about you!

Says that Jackfruitburger is aware of the fact society definitely hasn’t got over its prejudices yet? I can’t understand what else it would say.

ButchyRestingFace · 05/11/2018 18:18

So what did you say to the person who said this, OP?

I thought the other person was on the TV?

Bluelady · 05/11/2018 18:19

I think the "racism" is all in your head, OP.

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/11/2018 18:19

In Friends Joey was an out of work actor, Chandler worked in a cube, Rachel was a waitress and Monica worked in a restaurant but lived in massive apartments.

Not a fan of friends but in the last episode it was explained as rent control

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/11/2018 18:20

Jackfruitburger

What was the show?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/11/2018 18:22

All people are doing is pointing out that it isn't necessarily racist. It may be it may not be. You cannot be certain that it is unless the person making the remark you know to be racist. People interpret things differently.

slashlover · 05/11/2018 18:24

On Monica's apartment but not Chandler and Joeys.

borderline11 · 05/11/2018 18:27

Naomi Campbell (another black woman people don’t like hmm
Don’t be ridiculous, you really think people dislike her because of her colour. Nothing to do with her being a violent thug?

Why can’t we just dislike certain people, the colour of their skin is irrelevant, but fwiw the people that i personally dislike who is in the public eye all happen to be white. It’s getting ridiculous, people are looking for racism because they seem to want to find it.

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 18:38

conveniently chopped off my whole post there borderline11 🤣 if you read the whole post, it was trying to make an entirely different point

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/11/2018 18:54

Caprisunorange

how does what she went through at work excuse 15(ish) acts of (alleged) violence against different people?

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 18:56

How is it being used as an excuse?

Jackfruitburger · 05/11/2018 18:56

Here's the context. It was on MTV's Teen Mom OG, and it was on a forum for people who all watch the show (don't judge me Blush.) There is a new black family on there. Now I must admit I asked myself how the 24 year old mom, whose only income seems to have been from appearing on one mtv show years ago, was living alone in an apartment in the middle of L.A but I assumed she had inherited money or had another income source.
Another viewer posted 'I wonder how the dad has such a nice house? He doesn't look like he earns a lot of money.' The only thing that had been shown so far was his appearance (casual not scruffy) and his house. Why would anyone suppose that he didn't earn enough to buy that house? I work in private dentistry and he could have easily been a dentist at the weekend. I imagine a dentist in LA would earn a lot, enough to buy a nice house in the Valley. I cannot think of an occasion when anyone has ever asked how a white man got his money after seeing him for five seconds.

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/11/2018 19:00

How are you not using it as an excuse?

you stated "(another black woman people don’t like hmm)"

You posted
"..We’re not using black models in the editorial. She’s angry, and frustrated by it”

SO either people don't like her because she is black. and she has a excuse for being violent due to not being "used" for shoots.

Or people can dislike her because she is a violent thug.

Which is it?

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 19:04

You’re just being obtuse. Theyre not connected at all, stop trying to force them to be.

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/11/2018 19:05

Its called a difference of opinion.

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 19:07

umm... well it’s not is it? Because you’re claiming I stated something that I did not. You don’t have an OPINION, you are stating that I made an excuse for violent outbursts. Using misread quotes and everything. That’s obtuse.

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/11/2018 19:10

Suit yourself.

nellieellie · 05/11/2018 19:12

I can’t believe some of the comments here about assuming someone didn’t earn much be they black or white, because they were lounging around with a baseball cap on. In hot weather, isn’t it a fairly normal thing to do of a weekend? My DH regularly lounged about in summer in the garden. If the sun was out, he wore a baseball cap. He’s a fairly high earner.

steff13 · 05/11/2018 19:22

Was the dad also 24? I'd wonder how a 24-year-old afforded a fancy house in LA. I wouldn't think it's anything nefarious, I would just wonder.

I think whether the comment is racist depends on whether the person would make the same comment about a white person. There really isn't any way to know.

Jackfruitburger · 05/11/2018 19:28

No it was the 24 year olds dad, so a middle aged man!

OP posts:
Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 19:29

I wouldn’t even wonder in LA. Just assume family money or that they work in showbiz. All sorts of people are rich in LA.

Faithless12 · 05/11/2018 19:38

The people who are hiding behind the fact nothing explicitly racist was said are the issue here. I watched a colleague tell another they someone was posher then them. When pushed for an answer as to why they thought that, she couldn’t answer. Actually knowing the backgrounds of the two the mixed race woman was 100% posher than the white man. Yet still the assumption was that she could not be posh. It was clearly racist. You don’t have to mention race for it to be racist. Instead of being offended when someone points out prejudice, challenge your thoughts. It’s painful at times, being honest with yourself but actually might help the situation for others.

borderline11 · 05/11/2018 19:55

No i wasn’t conveniently chopping anything off. I just highlighted the bit I didn’t agree with.
