To think this comment is racist

Speculating on a black family on a tv show, someone said 'I just want to know where they've got their money from, the dad doesn't look like he does a job that pays really well.' He was a black man, relaxing in his garden, with a baseball cap on.
This is modern racism, it's not name calling, it's not signs on boarding house windows. It's not even a conscious thing for many people, I honestly don't believe that the woman who said this really even thought about her ludicrous idea of 'what wealth looks like.'
God the world is depressing sometimes.

@Jackfruitburger

WTAF? Do people search for things to get offended by?

Get a grip. YABU!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 05/11/2018 17:38

Oh For chrissakes

Miscible · 05/11/2018 17:40

How is that possibly racist? I'd think the same about a white man lounging around wearing a baseball cap

Really? How does wearing a baseball cap instantly make you someone who can't get a well-paid job?

greathat · 05/11/2018 17:40

Some people are clearly hatist

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/11/2018 17:40

Bloody hell many years ago I always wondered what Mr McAllister did to get such a fantastic house and pay for all his large extended family to go away for Christmas. I have also wondered how Max and Ruby lived in a nice house with no adults.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 05/11/2018 17:41

I don't think it's racist... I could think the same of a white man lounging in cap like others have said

What is it with MN atm? Everyone is so eager to be offended or outraged lately

I just think it's storing up for a backlash when people are being accused of racism all over the place for things that really aren't racist

Jackfruitburger · 05/11/2018 17:42

I don't find things to get offended about. I can't think of any other explanation as to why this woman would think that a black man, relaxing in his own large garden in his home, wouldn't look like he belonged there. I don't think it's the baseball cap thing as I associate those with men of a certain age who like golf! I think of Trump in his casual days. But put a black man in a baseball cap and sit him in his own damn garden and he's obviously up to know good.
Glad to see some people get it. It's the words people use. The way May racist grandparents think Harry and Megan are 'a funny match for each other.' The way white women inexplicably hate Beyoncé, Oprah, Michelle Obama and Serena Williams but they can't quite put their finger on why.

Now who's making generalisations? Have white women been polled on this issue?

I'm white. Huge Serena Williams and Michelle Obama fan. Okay, so that's a sample of one, but I can't recall hearing another white woman expressing dislike for anyone of those 4 women. Far less en masse.

Unless there's some massive white female conspiracy I've been left out of. Confused

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/11/2018 17:49

I'm a white female and I sometimes dislike people of any age, sex or colour without being able to define exactly why. And the reverse is also true, there are some people of any age,sex or colour I do like without being able to say exactly why.

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 17:50

Yes that’s quite common Butchy.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 05/11/2018 17:50

@ButchyRestingFace let me know if you find the conspiracy us white women are a part of.... I have never heard of this before

ButchyRestingFace · 05/11/2018 17:51

Yes that’s quite common Butchy.

What - the conspiracy or the dislike of these four?

I always thought Oprah was universally loved. Confused

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 17:53

The dislike of black women

havingabadhairday · 05/11/2018 17:53

The way white women inexplicably hate Beyoncé, Oprah, Michelle Obama and Serena Williams but they can't quite put their finger on why.

Do they? I have no opinion of Beyoncé, I'm a bit Hmm about Oprah because I read something about her promoting anti vax views, I like Michelle Obama and Serena Williams.

I wasn't aware there was a particular issue with white women not liking them and not knowing why.

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 17:54

Well if you lot don’t randomly dislike high profile black women they obviously it’s not a thing 🤣

WorraLiberty · 05/11/2018 17:54

A lot of people get snobby about baseball caps and consider people wearing them to be 'chavs', no matter what their skin colour.

I've not known many people to think 'golfer' to be honest.

Jackfruitburger · 05/11/2018 17:55

Sorry that was my mistake, I genuinely missed 'some' out of that sentence. I blame breastfeeding and typing. For what it's worth I'm a white woman with white children. I have no time for being outraged by trivial things but I don't think this is a trivial thing. It's the way that racism has evolved.
I've worked with quite a few people who say things like 'I don't know why I don't like Beyoncé, I just feel like she's arrogant' there was a definite rise in these sentiments during the time that Beyoncé got involved in BLM.

I believe I did refer to myself as being a sample of one in my post, but moreover, that I simply hadn't heard any woman in my acquaintance expressing dislike of those 4 whenever their names came up.

I've heard (white) blokes making distasteful comments about SW.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/11/2018 17:56

There probably are people who dont like them because they are black, but that doesn't make everybody who doesn't like them racist. There could be plenty of reasons people don't like them.

Caprisunorange · 05/11/2018 17:58

I remember watching an interview with Kate Moss- she commented on Naomi Campbell (another black woman people don’t like Hmm) and the rumours about her being a demanding diva. She said “people don’t understand what it’s like for NAomi. She’ll just get told, we’re not using any black models this season. We’re not using black models in the editorial. She’s angry, and frustrated by it”

Comes across as an attitude to people who maybe haven’t thought about the difficulties these women face ina. White world.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/11/2018 18:01

@Jackfruitburger, that is a phrase I have used myself, although not in relation to Beyonce. I have used it for men and women. It doesn't necessarily mean it's racist. I would use it about anybody I felt that way about.

AmateurSwami · 05/11/2018 18:04

Well if you lot don’t randomly dislike high profile black women they obviously it’s not a thing

Agree with this.

And yes op, a racist micro aggression. Racism will
Never end because people are more
Offended that being called out for racist behaviour than they are by racism.

CurryAndCobra · 05/11/2018 18:04

I don't think it is racist at all. Mountain and molehill.

slashlover · 05/11/2018 18:09

but they can't quite put their finger on why.

How come when it's a woman on here about her DH/friend/coworker/etc. It's called Spidey sense and it considered perfectly fine?

Jackfruitburger · 05/11/2018 18:11

I don't understand why so few of you are willing to see things from a different viewpoint. I feel like I've tried to explain white privilege and indirect racism about 50,000 times on MN.
I was so skeptical about the 'anti trans' opinions on here but after reading a lot of MN posts I can see where a lot of you are coming from and I understand why you feel that way. I have allowed my views to change from viewing everyone who disagreed with gender self identification as batshit crazy to seeing another side of things. Why are you guys so 'nope no racism here, ridiculous notion, absolutely nonsense.' Why can't you try to understand why this is wrong?!
