To think trash TV should be bloody banned!

Yes Facebook, I CAN believe what happened on DTTB last night, this is the third ‘can you believe he spent £10,000 on a piss up stag do and then made his fiancé wear a burlap sack down the isle’ article you’ve popped up on my news feed (randomly) in the past few weeks and YES I can believe it!

Why? Because this utter trash tv is just one big race to the bottom! That’s why. DDTB, Love Island, Big Brother....pretty much every reality show going is just a push from the TV channels to find ever more ridiculous, self absorbed, idiots who want fame and attention. Meanwhile we’re supposed to sit at home drinking supermarket Chardonnay and getting ‘pulled in’ by the concept that someone can ‘LOVE’ someone else after 2 days together, no real emotional involvement but a rompy snog in the hot tub? FFS!

And we the viewers are ‘fumming’ after the heavily pregnant fiancé is made to sky dive into her wedding by AWFUL fiancé using a bed sheet as a parachute because he spent the entire budget on his stag do in Budapest.
We’re not fuming though are we- we’re bloody loving it and tuning in again next week to see what borderline abusive idea the next idiot will inflict on his bride to be.

It’s trashing society and lowering standards for everyone - I’d rather watch paint dry!

Nah can't ban it. I use it like another person does, to switch off after a bad day at work. I don't want to watch boring antiques road show, or country file. I want to watch people screaming at each other and have a laugh at them being stupid. The apprentice is great for that, as is hells kitchen. DTTB is great trashy TV, and say yes to the dress is too or bridezillas for a laugh at controlling people.

Don't like it, don't watch it. I don't watch antiques road show as its boring to me. But I'm not trying to get it banned either, other people love it.

MissionItsPossible · 04/11/2018 11:18

I could understand your frustration if we were still in terrestrial tv times but there are hundreds of other channels to watch as well as hundreds if not thousands of shows to watch via playback, Netflix, now TV etc.

Or, read a book.

MissionItsPossible · 04/11/2018 11:19

Try getting on with your work rather than gossiping maybe. Nobody at my work sits around chatting about the telly last night.

You sound fun Hmm

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 04/11/2018 11:22

I work in a very male dominated office and they still all watch love Island etc, they all talk about it too. I don't watch it so I don't join in those conversations. It is quite simple really because I just crack on with my actual job 🤷‍♀️

Sinead100 · 04/11/2018 11:25

What MrsStrowman said. I have a stressful job/commute/family care responsibilities, and whilst I spend my lenghty commute reading a broad spectrum of books, or learning a new skill in my spare time, when I really do have an hour or two to myself I will watch TOWIE/ Made In Chelsea/ KUWTK. I don't think that such programmes shouldn't be aired. Nobody is forcing you to watch them, adopt the ridiculous practices they show, or to engage in discussions about them.

ClenchQueen · 04/11/2018 11:26

DDTB? What's that? Don't Do The Bride?

Scientistic · 04/11/2018 11:28

I can't bear anything like that either. But understand why some people do.

What bothers me is kids having aspirations to be reality tv stars etc. Urgh.

hmmwhatatodo · 04/11/2018 11:31

Yes. I think you are probably right. The only one I watch sometimes is Don’t tell the bride but it’s horrible to see sometimes. For example, the last one which had a day of the dead theme showed the bride (in my opinion) in a bad way (or maybe she is truly like this all the time). You find yourself wondering who would marry someone prone to quite viscious outbursts and is she like this behind closed doors. I wonder if they feel embarrassed watching it back and wish they hadn’t gone for it after all.

YouTheCat · 04/11/2018 11:44

Why would they feel embarrassed? They've got their 15 minutes of fame.

ScreamingValenta · 04/11/2018 11:48

Reading your update about the issue being people going on and on about TV programmes at work, rather than the programmes themselves, I understand how you feel.

hmmwhatatodo · 04/11/2018 11:49

Well I’d be pretty embarrassed if my 15 mins of fame involved me screaming for the cameras to be turned off right now and because I had a fit because I didn’t like the way a note was written so I stomped off to the garden leaving my friend standing alone saying “awkward!”

YouTheCat · 04/11/2018 11:51

These people have no self-awareness otherwise they wouldn't be on this kind of show in the first place.

BonnieF · 04/11/2018 11:55

I don’t watch soaps, game shows, talent shows, reality shows or anything with the word ‘celebrity’ in the title. I do watch lots of sport, current affairs and factual stuff and I listen to R4 a lot. I probably should watch more high-quality US drama.

I don’t think this makes me a ‘cultural snob’, just that my tastes are different to some other people’s. You watch what you enjoy and I will watch what I enjoy. Just don’t expect me to be interested in X factor, Eastenders or the Kardashians, because it’s not happening.

BrownCowStunning · 04/11/2018 11:59

Would love to see those Channel 5 shows banned, like Benefits Britain. What's the point in them, other than to make people middle class people angry? And those ones with bailiffs, how is that entertainment.

PositiveVibez · 04/11/2018 12:00

My colleague and I both watched love island and had a chat about it in the morning in a 'did you see love island last night' and spent a few minutes discussing it then got on with our day.

Another colleague didn't watch it and complained to our boss that she felt left out.

Upshot is we don't really discuss anything now for fear of upsetting our sensitive colleague.

It's a fucking laugh a minute.

MaisyPops · 04/11/2018 12:05

I knew it would take minutes for the claims.of cultural snobbery to turn up.

I dislike a lot of trashy TV mainly because it seems to be built on the principle of women looking good for men, women being made to look silly by men, rich boys and girls focusing on trying to get laid and z list celebrities trying to get enough of a following to get some shots in OK magazine and a January diet book/DVD.

Things like bake off, masterchef and other reality shows about an actual topic/skill come down to personal taste.

I do think there's fewer documentaries and good dramas these days though maybe I should get Netflix or some other subscriptions thing.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/11/2018 12:07

Brides walk down a thing called an aisle.

The vast majority of brides in churches actually walk down the centre passageway, which is usually called the nave - and not a side passageway that some churches have, which are referred to as aisles.

pigsDOfly · 04/11/2018 12:50

Well I'm sorry if I misunderstood your comments were not based on what you've seen yourself OP.

You seem incredibly informed and aware of what is happening in these programmes so I assumed you were watching them.

In that case I would suggest you just not read what people write on social media and either walk away from your gossiping acquaintances or tune yourself out of their inane chatter; easy enough to do if you have no interest in what they're talking about.

AGHHHH · 04/11/2018 12:51

I don't watch tele and hate all those crap shows but don't think it should be banned! YABU.

JacquesHammer · 04/11/2018 13:03

I believe the popular phrase is ‘Oh do fuck off, dear’

Erudite. You’re really the full package aren’t you?

isseywithcats · 04/11/2018 13:34

we have an item in our house called the remote control and over 500 channells on sky so i just use said remote and find something i like better than love island etc. mind you my guilty trash telly is say yes to the gown and ive found the gown love looking at the awful wedding dresses and then how lovely they look when they find the right one for them

MrDonut · 04/11/2018 14:20

See, all you need is a remote control for your coworkers. Whenever they talk about stuff you aren’t interested in, just change the channel.

Starlight345 · 04/11/2018 14:24

Why don’t you give your co workers a list of acceptable conversations and maybe a list of programs they are allowed to watch in their own free time ?????

CoughLaughFart · 04/11/2018 14:59

Erudite. You’re really the full package aren’t you?

What is it you’re looking for? You seem to have a bee in your bonnet because I’m not trying to be Gore Vidal. Frankly I think you’re just looking for an argument.

HopeGarden · 04/11/2018 15:00

Maybe you could invest in some earplugs or ear defenders to wear when you don’t want to listen to your colleagues chatting?

Or listen to music through headphones to drown their talk out?
