Just that really. How old are you and how long do you have left on your mortgage?

Bobbybobbins · 04/11/2018 08:59

39 and 19 years left. V impressed by those of you who have paid it off. Once our youngest gets 30 hours at nursery we will be upping our overpayments.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 04/11/2018 09:00

37 and 20. It's very low, though, so we could pay it off earlier if we got our shit together and stopped having weekends away and buying tat for the DC.

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 04/11/2018 09:02

32 and 14 years left. We’re in the far north of England so it’s a lot cheaper to live here!

moomoogalicious · 04/11/2018 09:02

48 and 17 years left. Recently moved to a much bigger house though. Hope to start overpaying in a few years

megletthesecond · 04/11/2018 09:02

4 years left.
Always overpaid and then a large chunk paid off by inheritance. No fancy holidays, sensible car etc.

Oakenbeach · 04/11/2018 09:03

34 and 6 months. It will have taken 4 years to pay off. And before anyone says it’s bragging we’ve sacrificed holidays, new cars, eating out all the time, new clothes all the time etc to facilitate this

That’s good, but you’re being disingenuous to insist you’re not bragging. You’re bragging that you’ve been about your financial discipline, and inferring those who aren’t as disciplined aren’t as worthy. You’re within your rights to do that, and some people may need a kick up the back side to get them to be more careful with their money, but it’s bragging nonetheless.

Iwannasnack · 04/11/2018 09:03

37 and around 26 years I think. We’re in an expensive part of the south. Took out a 35 year loan at age 30. Overpayed for a few years until job circumstances changed. I find the whole thing very depressing!

DragonMamma · 04/11/2018 09:03

34 and 28 years although we overpay so that should come down to around 20 at the current rate but I’m hoping that will get smaller again when we come to the end of our deal in a couple of years and the baseline repayment gets smaller (so the overpayment is more)

BrokenWing · 04/11/2018 09:03

49, paid off at 46.

A lot of this is relative though depending on the size of the mortgage. Mine was fairly modest and well within my means. If we had mortgaged up to the top of what we can could have I would still be paying off for several more years.

jakesmommy · 04/11/2018 09:04

37, 11 years to go

PickAChew · 04/11/2018 09:05

49 and 21 years.

Spent several years mortgage free in our last house but moved to a bigger house and more expensive area. Once our fixing the place up costs have diminished, we will start overpaying.

Kahlua4me · 04/11/2018 09:06

50 and paid it off a few years ago with inheritance from my mum.

Would much rather still have a huge mortgage and my lovely mum back though.

EdithDickie · 04/11/2018 09:07

38 years old, 28 years remaining. We've just moved. This time last month it was only 7 years to go. Still, now we have space and a roof that doesn't leak and no rising damp! Hopefully it'll be paid off a bit sooner.

Oakenbeach · 04/11/2018 09:07

BatsAreCool

These threads are great way to inspire you to increase your mortgage payments. Indeed, it’s made me think I need to do that! But are they representative? Probably not.

Dollymixture22 · 04/11/2018 09:07

39 and 11. Without overpaying. Hopefully less

MynameisJune · 04/11/2018 09:08

@oakenbeach Odfod it isn’t bragging to state that we prioritised paying off the mortgage over doing stuff that other people do normally. I was just pointing out that we weren’t over paying the mortgage and living the high life so people who saw it and start thinking why they couldn’t do the same. Anyone could if they wanted to but lots of people are happy to just pay it off in the term. Trust me sometimes I wish DH was the same because it’s been hard sacrificing things and seeing all my friends go off on holidays etc.

ButchyRestingFace · 04/11/2018 09:09
  1. Paid it off a couple of months ago. Then promptly sold the place and am now looking to buy again. Mortgage free this time.
PurpleWithRed · 04/11/2018 09:10

Downsized during divorce; paid off at 55 when new DH and I got legal.

EnglishRose13 · 04/11/2018 09:10

29 and 21 years.

TheCag · 04/11/2018 09:10

37 and it will be paid off in six months, however we are moving next year and will be back up to 27 years then. Being mortgage free will be a fleeting pleasure!

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 04/11/2018 09:10

32 and 14 years left. We’re in the far north of England so it’s a lot cheaper to live here!

didireallysaythat · 04/11/2018 09:10

May I ask how much people who over pay, are over paying ?

I did the maths for our mortgage and an extra £100 a month (

MrTrebus · 04/11/2018 09:11

@Oakenbeach. Exactly!

PinguPengo · 04/11/2018 09:11

We are both 34 and have 34 years left - borrowed all the way to our planned retirement age. We are in London though and I agree with Mr Trebus that our circs are pretty normal (in fact lots of our friends haven’t bought yet) so I don’t worry about it too much. We are saving hard to pay off a big lump sum when our current (low) interest rate ends and will overpay when we have the money so I don’t expect we’ll actually be paying it until we are 68.

explodingkitten · 04/11/2018 09:12

I'm 39. Buying a new house in January with a mortgage of 30 years. We expect to be able to pay almost half off later that year when we have sold our old apartment. Not in UK, economy is more stable. We hope to pay off the mortgage within 20 years.
