Just that really. How old are you and how long do you have left on your mortgage?

OP posts:
Sleepyblueocean · 04/11/2018 08:49
  1. Paid off 2 years ago but was able to buy at a time when houses were much cheaper.
marine04 · 04/11/2018 08:49

49 and 8 years left. We paid off a chunk recently to take two years off.

namastayinbed · 04/11/2018 08:49

39 and 20 years but we overpay to try and make this more like 10 or 15.

batshitbetty · 04/11/2018 08:50

40 and 28 years 😱 We were late getting on the housing ladder due to ridiculous prices 😞

xyzandabc · 04/11/2018 08:50

40 and 29 years

This time last year it would have been 39 and 10 years but we've taken out a huge new mortgage to move to our forever house.

mizu · 04/11/2018 08:50

Just bought 1st and probs last place, 45 with 23 years. So will be paying it til I retire. Quite normal in my sector of work.

chickydoo · 04/11/2018 08:50

50 paid off 8 years ago
Not bragging just fact

Faster · 04/11/2018 08:51

33 and 15 years left. But I plan on moving soon so that will increase.

MynameisJune · 04/11/2018 08:51

34 and 6 months. It will have taken 4 years to pay off. And before anyone says it’s bragging we’ve sacrificed holidays, new cars, eating out all the time, new clothes all the time etc to facilitate this.

SilverLining10 · 04/11/2018 08:51

35 and 0. All bonuses and other income paid into mortgage for a few years and now paid off.

IdblowJonSnow · 04/11/2018 08:52

43 and 9 years left due to a generous gift. Otherwise would have been 18 years left.

PixieDreams · 04/11/2018 08:52

38 and 28 years. Am more depressed about it than ever (after reading your replies). Started overpaying for a year but had to stop due to financial situation. The plan is to get it down when (if) we are more comfortable in the future. On the plus side, it's not a huge mortgage by some standards.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 04/11/2018 08:53

A lot of the reply indicate around 50 is average to pay it off which would make sense. A 25 year mortgage taken out at the age of 25 is probably pretty normal for the time.

We fit that too. 51 and just recently paid off.

KanielOutis · 04/11/2018 08:53

31, and 7 more years. I bought a flat that no one wanted. On a main road above a row of shops. Only one picture on right move because the inside was so bad. It was what I could afford with a 100% mortgage when I was 21. No bragging here, just luck and a bit of financial savviness. When the initial 6.89% rate came to an end I kept the payments the same. When the nursery years ended I put the money towards the mortgage. Knocked almost ten years off.

CosyNights · 04/11/2018 08:53

23 and 22 years left

sofato5miles · 04/11/2018 08:54

49 and 12 years

ShrinkWrap · 04/11/2018 08:54

40 and 24 years. Will think more about overpayments when the expensive childcare years are over.

Oakenbeach · 04/11/2018 08:54

Surely all replies build up a 'norm'

You’re being naive - I don’t think that’s how it works at all....

Those who are in an enviable position (I.e. I’m 26 but only have 4 months left due my superhuman financial planning!) are far more likely to post than someone who is depressed by the thought they are in their forties and have just taken out a 25 year mortgage so doesn’t even click on the thread!

HemlockStarglimmer · 04/11/2018 08:54

57, 5 years left.

Towerofjoyless · 04/11/2018 08:55

38 and 26 years. Never been in a position to overpay with young children and childcare fees, hoping this will change as they get older.

lynzpynz · 04/11/2018 08:55

34 and 13 years left.

I refused the 120% mortgage offered and 35 year term they were trying to give me on my first property (this is pre-crash - no wonder so many poor folk in neg equity they used to practically throw ‘furnishing’ money at you!) and this is my third property. Was lucky enough to be able to stay with my parents for 8 months and literally saved every penny that wasnt digs, lived like a hermit to save a 10% deposit (1st small flat was £70k in scotland in 2006). Was so jealous of all my friends going travelling and having a ball at 22 but looking back its the best decision i ever made. When its paid off I’m finally going to go travelling!! Smile

speakout · 04/11/2018 08:56

I'm 56, we have 14 years left to pay.

However- that is theoretical- we are living in a house that will be too large for us soon ( adult children flying) so in 5 years time this 5 bedroomed property will be too large for us. So we will downsize and free up equity within the next 8 years or so.

We also have enough in savings to pay the mortgage off in total, but our savings are attracting more interest than our mortgage rate.

So on paper I will be 70 before the mortgage is paid off, but won't ever get to that stage.

Somewhereovertherainbow13 · 04/11/2018 08:57

34 and 19 years. Hoping to re-mortgage soon though so we can either reduce the length or start making bigger over payments

BatsAreCool · 04/11/2018 08:59

Oakenbeach I have been clicking on financial mortgage threads for years. How do you think we started to throw everything we could at the mortgage to get it paid early?

But hey consider me naive. I won't say what I consider you to be.

Oorwulliesbucket · 04/11/2018 08:59

Similar to speakout, we are 45 and have just moved so 20 years mortgage but kids will probably be away after 10/15 years so plan is to downsize then.
