If 141 pounds is 10 stone 1, how come 137 pounds is 9 stone 7?

It's only 4 pounds less, but there's 14 pounds in a stone. Is it me?

Confused

Jesus op

Shaboohshoobah1 · 03/11/2018 20:20

Op, there are 14lbs in a stone, not 10. That’s why it’s not working out the way you think it should - easier way to look at it is that 140 lbs is 10 stone exactly, so 137 is 9 st 11. It would only be 9 st 7 if there were 10 lbs in a stone (but there aren’t, so that’s why it’s wrong!)

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 03/11/2018 20:22

I know, I know! I'm a nutter!Grin

OK, 9 stone 11.

i prefer 9 stone 7 though

Can anyone else see why I'm confused though?

My goodness OP. I’m glad it’s sorted for you now. I guess arithmetic isn’t your strongest card but good luck with the weight loss if that’s why you are asking. I hope your diet isn’t one that involves a lot of weighing/portion conversions/calculations. Smile

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 03/11/2018 20:36

Can anyone else see why I'm confused though?

Nope. Please tell me there are no numbers involved in your job!

SuperstarDJ · 03/11/2018 20:40

Can anyone else see why I'm confused though?

No. You’re not one of those people that thinks acting a bit ditsy is cute and funny, are you?

slashlover · 03/11/2018 20:40

Think of it as half a stone is 7 pounds so 0.5 of a stone is 7 pounds. Three quarters of a stone is 10.5 pounds so 0.75 of a stone is 10.5 pounds.

You had 0.7 so just under 10.5 pounds.

I'm an actuarist actually

I think the OP has taken 137lbs and divided it by 14, which gives 9.7 hence the 9 and a half stone (that she isn’t...)

MrsSarahSiddons · 03/11/2018 20:54

Do you mean that you are an actuary?
Are you sure that you're not on glue?

eloliphant · 03/11/2018 20:55

Can completely see why you're confused OP.

When you google 137lbs in stones it says 9.7 , easy to think that means 9 stone and 7lbs

If 141 pounds is 10 stone 1, how come 137 pounds is 9 stone 7?
3out · 03/11/2018 20:57

It’s like the time - 0.5 an hour isn’t the same as 50 minutes.
5.5 foot isn’t the same as 5 foot 5 inches
And half (0.5) a stone isn’t 5 lbs.

Does that help?

I think you might be better off measuring your weight loss in kg, OP. Because 0.5kg IS 500g. 0.75kg is 750g etc

siakcaci · 03/11/2018 21:01

When you google 137lbs in stones it says 9.7 , easy to think that means 9 stone and 7lbs

How is it? It doesn't say 9st 7lbs, it days 9.7 stone.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 03/11/2018 21:05

How is it? It doesn't say 9st 7lbs, it days 9.7 stone

Exactly. How can someone mistake a figure just shy of 9 & 3/4 for 9 & 1/2?

donquixotedelamancha · 03/11/2018 21:11

I think you might be better off measuring your weight loss in kg, OP.

That would be impossible, Kg are a unit of mass not weight.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 03/11/2018 21:11

I'm an actuarist

That can't be true. I thought you needed a mathematics background, with statistics knowledge? So how do you not understand the difference between 0.5 and 0.7?

LucyMorningStar · 03/11/2018 21:12

And this is why all this stone-pound nonsense should be dropped altogether. Metric measurements are so much more easier to deal with!

Doyoumind · 03/11/2018 21:13

Surely you mean actuary OP 🤔

borntobequiet · 03/11/2018 21:15

Dear God.

Stupomax · 03/11/2018 21:18

I'm an actuarist actually

What is an 'actuarist'?

UterusUterusGhali · 03/11/2018 21:19

I've used a conversion app that uses a decimal point like that. It's not that uncommon a mistake.

Just stick with decimal. It's 2018. :)

MongerTruffle · 03/11/2018 21:43

Just stick with decimal. It's 2018.

Just stick with metric. It's 2018.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 03/11/2018 21:46

Surely you mean actuary OP

Yeah, we're having our legs pulled here.
