Pregnancy a danger to others? Defamation?

Traveller01 · 03/11/2018 09:26

I'm pregnant with my first child and had a positive home pregnancy test before I set off for a volunteer trip to Africa. The pregnancy was confirmed by my doctor on return. The trip was awful and I tried to claim compensation but they've said as I hadn't informed them I was pregnant then I can't claim. They also state that I knowing put others in danger! I would have been 2 weeks pregnant at the time and I think this is grounds for defamation. I can get a written note from my doctor stating the date of confirmation from them. I took precautions and didn't take anti malaria tablets. It was low malaria season anyway. I'm angry that they stated that I as a pregnant lady was a danger to others (everyone is still alive). Should I seek legal help or just leave it? Thanks

Where in Africa were you? What was the volunteer trip? There are some places in Africa, where hospitals are 100/200 miles away through bogs / swamps / dangerous militant filled jungles so anyone with any kind of care needs would put lives in danger.

Ghanagirl · 03/11/2018 09:51

@Traveller01
So many unanswered questions...

chrisinthesun · 03/11/2018 09:56

@Traveller01

Oh FGS! Hmm

What is wrong with people!!!

Bet you would issue a lawsuit against an employer if you snapped a fucking false nail off, whilst you were filing paperwork away at work.

Get a grip, be grateful you have these opportunities to travel, be thankful you are healthy (and pregnant!), and stop being ridiculous!

Juells · 03/11/2018 09:56

Have I misunderstood the OP? She volunteered to help a charity, now wants to screw money out of them because she didn't have a good time? Was pregnant so didn't take anti-malaria drugs. As her claim for compensation didn't work, she now wants to do the charity for defamation?

😲😲😲

🤣🤣🤣

The CF of all CFs

Ellisandra · 03/11/2018 10:00

I’m feeling quite sad that the OP is so obviously unreasonable that she won’t post again.

itsaboojum · 03/11/2018 10:02

Ok, I think we’ve established the OP has misunderstood what "defamation" means without any further need to jump on.

IIUC you wish to claim compensation because the trip was awful, but "they" said your failure to declare the pregnancy means your compensation claim is disallowed.

It’s just possible you might have a valid claim, but a lot will depend on the details and precise circumstances.

Who are the "they" you are wanting to claim against? A holiday company? Airline? The organisation with which you volunteered?

LordPickle · 03/11/2018 10:04

So you knowingly went to Africa whilst pregnant, didn't tell anyone and didn't take anti-malaria tablets (therefore putting yourself and others at risk) and now YOU want compensation because it wasn't a good trip.

Good luck mate.

JaniceBattersby · 03/11/2018 10:06

You have zero chance of a successful libel case.

However, as itsaboojum said, your pregnancy does not necessarily invalidate any insurance claim. If, for example, you were bitten by a lion while out on safari, that is unlikely to have been affected by your pregnancy so you could make a successful insurance claim. It’s all very ifs and buts though. We would need more detail.

SnuggyBuggy · 03/11/2018 10:06

What actually happened on the trip?

footballmum · 03/11/2018 10:07

OP not been back?! Hmm

sleepingonthesparebed · 03/11/2018 10:11

I suspect "danger to others" means "danger to unborn child".

BakedBeans47 · 03/11/2018 10:14

Defamation ffs. Get a grip of yourself.

Glumglowworm · 03/11/2018 10:14

You’re being absolutely ridiculous throwing around words like defamation without even the vaguest notion of what they mean.

In what way was your volunteering trip “awful” and why do you feel you’re entitled to compensation for that?

Sadly, we all know OP won’t be back to answer any sensible questions

BakedBeans47 · 03/11/2018 10:16

Also what does the confirmation from the GP have to do with anything? You knew you were pregnant before you went. I’ve had 2 kids and the doctor never confirmed my pregnancies - they just took my word for it

ForalltheSaints · 03/11/2018 10:18

I don't think you should be suing for defamation, but making it public about the (presumably) insurance company and the statement they made will probably have more impact.

ScreamingValenta · 03/11/2018 10:19

The trip was awful and I tried to claim compensation

Can you give more detail about why it was awful and what you were seeking compensation for?

lola006 · 03/11/2018 10:21

I don’t get what you’re claiming compensation for? Did you need a hospital or doctor visit while there? Did you lose luggage?

I’ve been on trips before that weren’t the time of my life but I hardly came home and thought to claim compensation.

HellenaHandbasket · 03/11/2018 10:24

I was assuming compensation for the flight...the literal trip

LostInShoebiz · 03/11/2018 10:30

Sounds like you may have been , and still are, a danger to others...by virtue of the amount of nonsense you spout.

RabbityMcRabbit · 03/11/2018 10:33

Really not sure what the issue is here or what you're hoping to achieve OP. You want compensation for what exactly?

category12 · 03/11/2018 10:33

Sorry, you went on a volunteering trip and you want compensation because of what? It was awful in what way?

Presumably it was a charitable enterprise on your part, so not sure why you're now gunning for the charity?

What were you expecting? What actually happened?

purplecorkheart · 03/11/2018 10:34

Why was the trip awful? I would have thought that being pregnant (no matter how early, and you did know) and not declaring it would make the policy invalid. I do agree that the comment about your pregnancy being a danger to someone else is a bit odd but you were not defamed. I suggest you google the meaning of the word.

Caprisunorange · 03/11/2018 10:34

Who are you trying to claim compensation from and why?

InterstellarScreamingElla · 03/11/2018 10:35

Could you be more specific as to the issues with the trip and why you wanted to claim compensation?

midsomermurderess · 03/11/2018 10:41

How is it defamation? In what sense has it ruined your reputation?
