I’m sure I’m not the only person to have figured this out, but before I started doing it, I’d never seen or heard of it. So, herewith my cheater’s guide to faff-free mashed potato:

Put potatoes in microwave until they’re done all the way through.

Cut in half.

Scoop potato out of skin straight onto plate.

Add butter and smush with fork. Add grated cheese to taste.

Enjoy mashed potato with no peeling, chopping, boiling or washing up afterwards.

For those that blend up the potatoes in the Kenwood or blender, doesn't it go all slimy? I tried it recently when dd had her wisdoms out. It was awful.

Cherries101 · 03/11/2018 09:57

I just put them in the oven forget about them for 2/3 hours and then peel off the jackets.

RTFT · 03/11/2018 09:57

Can't believe some of you leave the potato unpeeled when making mash, finding bits of potato skin would put me right off

CleanHonestGoals · 03/11/2018 10:03

Instant Pot
Best thing ever for doing mashed potatoes in

Dahlietta · 03/11/2018 10:13

I can't believe how many people don't make their own mash!
Mind you, I can't really talk. Generally my husband makes it and pretty much everything else we eat

ReverseTheFerret · 03/11/2018 10:15

I frigging hate peeling potatoes and those Y peelers are just shite for me - so I'm giving thought to the frozen mash approach. Not for a lack of culinary prowess or anything like that, just because it's a job I fucking hate doing (same as I buy the frozen diced onion just for a bit of an easier life).

Cagliostro · 03/11/2018 10:18

I did the baked potato method recently. It’s useful for me as I get a lot of pain in my hands which peeling (I prefer mash without skin) and chopping can exacerbate. Plus less washing up.

Plus you can then keep the skins for crispy potato skins...

Ispatienceavirtue · 03/11/2018 10:19

Frozen mash for me every time!
Always used to peel, boil and mash then watched a Delia Smith programme about cooking proper meals in minutes. She advocated frozen mash as it didn't have lots of preservatives or additives unlike powdered/instant.
I put a whole bag in an oven dish, knob of butter.splash of cream then in the oven. My personal preference is to fluff it up with a fork 5 mins from the end then put in top of oven so the top goes all crispy and the rest is smooth creamy mash - I love the contrast! Oh and that's for a family of 6 so there's plenty!

OutragedEtc · 03/11/2018 10:21

I just googled the ingredient list on the Idaho Mash.

I'll probably pass.

Littlelambpeep · 03/11/2018 10:23

Honestly can't understand how it's worth buying mash already done? Takes a few mins to peel (I use rooster 7kg bags) once it's boiling away you can have a coffee or whatever. Far far cheaper.

If I want a quicker dinner I par boil new potatoes cut in half and roast with herbs and butter for 15min

Veganfortheanimals · 03/11/2018 11:20

I'm feeding 7 people a meal...that's at least 2 spuds each.my microwave isn't big enough, plus it would take ages to cook

AornisHades · 03/11/2018 11:30

Frozen mash is great. When topping a pie you can empty a bag on and stick it in the oven. Ten minutes later spread it with a fork and put it back in the oven.

GabsAlot · 03/11/2018 12:06

ok ive bought some idaho mash will see what its like

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/11/2018 14:59

Sainsburys own brand is by far the best instant mash.

Mash with peel in sounds revolting.

Shoppingwithmother · 03/11/2018 15:02

Co-op ready made fresh mash is really nice and £1.00 a pack so not bad at all

MsJuniper · 03/11/2018 15:13

I did that for my son's dinner once and he's refused mash since in case I do it that way again.

HauntedPencil · 03/11/2018 15:19

Is it like Smash? Smash always tasted a bit funky.

fantasmasgoria1 · 03/11/2018 15:45

My mashed potato cheat is the frozen stuff from Iceland! A bit of butter in it and it is great!

childcareheadache · 03/11/2018 15:55

Frozen mash here! It is amazing!

PtangyangkipperbangOi · 03/11/2018 16:00

Dont use a ricer for lump free mash, you need to peel, slice in 1cm slices, boil for 10 mins and then drain. Add the spuds, butter and a splash of milk into the pan and use an electric whisk to blitz them. they come out super fluffy, light and creamy. No lumps at all.

Cambalamb · 03/11/2018 16:45

Yes but put the potato halves in a potato ricer for even better quick mash. No need to even remove the skin!

Cambalamb · 03/11/2018 16:46

Ptang I think we know how to make mash. It's easier to microwave and rice.

Cambalamb · 03/11/2018 16:48

As for peel, it stays in the ricer, a bit like crushing a garlic clove in a crusher with skin on.

redsummershoes · 03/11/2018 16:53

smash with a knob of butter and a pinch of nutmeg.

redsummershoes · 03/11/2018 16:53

...but washing up the potato ricer is a right pain
