I was told off by a work colleague

i have been at my current job since June, the person concerned has been there longer than me. He is the accounts guy, not my manager and I do not need to answer to him at all.

He works downstairs and me upstairs but you can see my desk if you walk round the corner from downstairs as I'm at the top of the stairs.

I work as admin so people sometimes ask me to type up stuff for them ect, which is no issues. I was hired to do the project manager and ICT persons admin.

so this particular person I have never had issues with and had a good relationship with until today.

He ask me to type up some stuff and I ask when does he need it by which he says "its not urgent, like 2-3 days I don't need it today" he gave me this work around 3pm

so everyone has left the office and it is just me and him (we are a small team of around 8) he walks pass the stairs (at the bottom of the stairs) once and sees me on my phone, he then does it again to go loo then when he is back turns around and says to me...

"I will appreciate if you do what I told you to do and not play on your phone"
I said I am doing it which he said "no youre not" and I said you told me it wasn't urgent which he said "that's not the point you don't just sit there on your phone"

I was very shocked by his attitude, as stated he is NOT my manager or of any authority to me.

He didn't even come upstairs to see if I had done anything since giving it to me so I made a point to finish it all and put it on his desk before the end of the day at 5pm.

I then left and I did slam the door and ignore him when he said bye to me.

do you think I am wrong at all?

He asked me to type up some stuff for him, which was fine

The point PP were making is that you should not be working in admin when your command of the English language is poor.

According to some posters it is acceptable to play on phones and post on social media. If that is the case, think about the teachers and nurses and doctors who can never play around on their phones. Any job that is public facing could never do this.
I can't believe some employers encourage people to waste time in this way.

I sit with a team I’m not part of. Their boss is a director. He’s never done so but I wouldn’t take kindly to him deciding what I should and shouldn’t be doing. Director or not, it isn’t his place to talk to me about how I work. The correct thing to do would be for him to take it up with my line manager. There are members of that team who are more junior than me, if I feel they aren’t doing what they should be, I speak to their line manager. The heirarchy exists for a reason and only an egotistical twat decides it’s up to him to chastise members of staff he has no management responsibility for.

Being on your phone at work isn’t the end of the world. We’ve come a long way since the days of nose to the grindstone 8 hours a day dark ages.

I certainly wouldn’t have made sure I finished his stuff. That would have gone right to the end of the queue.

I have a younger cousin who is studying English Literature after having gained top marks in every exam she sat. The way she types on social media makes it seem like she is poor at written English. Why must people judge others and belittle them. For all you know, the OP may well be very good at her job.

That’s the thing doctors and nurses also do this. It’s a bugbear if mine. The junior doctors in particular remind me of my teenage children who have difficulty prising themselves away from their phone for 2 seconds. I’m baffled by it. It’s a real problem as far as I can see. People in general don’t seem to be able to function without their phone being glued to them. Any boss who doesn’t have a problem with it because they know who the workers are are still likely to be bothered with the lazy ones then. So if that was the case then as a boss you would say A it’s okay for you to be in your phone because you’re a good worker and you’re meeting your targets, but B the same can’t be said for you so sorry put your Phone Away!!

I don't care if he's been there since the year for, he has no right to bully you an that's what he done. I'd probably would have said tell him to back off but he waited until everyone else had gone.
Get clarification from your manager and mention his behaviour. I'll bet anything he's done similar before.
Oh and don't slam doors, you're not 12.

I would mention it to my manager because sometimes small conflicts like this can escalate and I think it’s important to keep everything out in the open. OTOH I wouldn’t make too big of a deal of it. I would establish if you’re even supposed to be doing this guy’s admin but I would not let this develop into an immature feud between the two of you.

Apropos of nothing, can someone tell me whether you can claim benefits immediately after being sacked? Or is being sacked seen as "deliberate impoverishment" or whatever the form of words is?

You need to handle these things better in The workplace op
You should not be accepting work which is not in your remit to do, If I understand correctly you were typing as a favour?
He definately should not have spoken to you so rudely, you should have politely and assertively pulled him about that there and then, ( please take note that assertive is the opposite of aggressive)
if you had said " I'm typing this as a favour, it's not my job to do this, you are not my lone manager" I would have then handed it back to him unless he apologised
You must speak to HIM about it on Monday and have an adult conversation.
Don't slam doors at work it makes you look like a stroppy teenager

Mrsmuddle but every workplace is different. There are lots of things public facing workers can’t do, does that mean every workplace should enforce those rules even if they’re totally unnecessary? Why does it matter if people are on their phones or social media as long as the work is getting done?

If I wanted to send a text at work I must say I would go into a toilet - Although that may not sound ok! Then no-one could say they'd seen me with my phone out at work.

I used to work with someone who would spend a lot of the day making it look like she was doing work but wasn’t, she would look at houses online, clothes etc in work time. It used to really annoy me, as she was actually paid more than me but I did twice as much work 🙄
Maybe he was annoyed you were on your phone and he was really busy?

As an employer it really pisses me off when employees are constantly texting/playing on phones I pay them a good hourly rate well above minimum wage to work within the business. If you were paying a tradesman an hourly rate you’d be moaning like mad if he/she charged you while spending 30 minutes of every hour on their phone engaging in social banter. It’s one thing chatting to Co workers but your not your talking to people outside of your working environment. I don’t mind them taking calls in an emergency but ultimately I’m losing money when they are engaged on social media.
I have a strict mobile phone policy at work. In every other aspect though I’m a pushover as a boss.
