To not want to take my Coat off if it is cold.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 16:04

I am always feeling the cold especially in these winter months. Last winter was dreadful.

When I am at home I always have the heating turned on.

When I go to friends or relatives or even at work I always find it very chilly. If I leave my coat on if it is a bit chilly I always worry others think I am rude. I wouldnt want others to turn the heating on just for me though get relieved in a way when they do.

I worry as well that something may be wrong with me as I am cold at the best of times when others arent.

Anyone else feel like this?

Have you had your thyroid checked? Feeling cold can be a symptom it's on the fritz.

user1471426142 · 02/11/2018 16:07

I think some people run hotter or colder than others. When I get cold I tend to get stomach upsets so I don’t care what others think anymore and if I’m cold, I layer up. Coats are a bit harder to keep on but can you make sure you’ve got a thick jumper and socks when visiting?

SlipperyNettle · 02/11/2018 16:13

YANBU. Perfectly fine to keep an item of clothing on if you’re cold rather than shiver to be polite!

I reckon I’ll be an anomaly here, but personally I think if your guest is so cold they’re sat in a coat (and they’re staying some length of time) it’d be pretty rude not to turn the heating up or provide blankets to ensure they’re comfortable, it’s a basic element of being a decent host.

ClaudiaWankleman · 02/11/2018 16:14

I think it is a bit rude - like you don’t plan on staying too long when you’re a guest. More acceptable at work because there is never a time when everyone in the office is happy with the temperature.

Jumpers and casual scarves in social situation.

My sil always keeps her coat on for her entire visit. The house is warm enough for my elderly parents (that's too warm for everyone else...) and so we don't turn it up so that eleven of us are uncomfortably hot just for her. There are throws and blankets and she uses them too.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 16:19

I havent had a thyroid test no.

I do tend to bundle up as much as I can in either jumpers or cardigans, and yeh always have Socks on, never go barefoot unless it is summer.

Thermal underwear? They're lovely and warm and a bit more discreet than wearing an "I'm not stopping coat" imo. Know how you feel though. I do have under active thyroid btw.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 16:35

Yes I have been stocking up on the Thermal Underwear this year.

My flat is always cold at the best of times also even when the heating on it doesnt make too much difference as it is old storage heaters.

I'm always cold (thyroid related) so I usually layer up and carry a (fake) pashmina or woolly shawl with me

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 16:46

Yes been trying to layer up as much as possible, we have had it really cold in the past week in general.

My hubby thinks I am mad as I resort to wearing Wooly tights on under trousers and was like that most days for about 4 months last winter though my legs do get cold.

If you're always cold no matter where you go then it sounds like it's your body temperature rather than other people's houses that is out of whack and I would just accept that you need to wear plenty of layers rather than keeping a coat on, which I do think is quite awkward. Can you invest in really good quality basics in merino wool, cashmere, technical fabrics etc? So much more effective than polyester or similar. And I'd go to GP to get checked out.

pyjamaparty1 · 02/11/2018 16:57

I always keep my coat on wherever I go, I'm currently sat with my coat on in my mils house! So I don't think yabu 🙊

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 17:04

Tend to go for Cashmere and Merino when I am buying clothes.

I try to bundle up as much as I can to avoid feeling as cold.

Make sure there's nowhere for heat to escape - eg wear a shirt underneath the jumpers so you have a tight collar, tight cuffs, and the shirt tucked into trousers. - I find it makes a big difference.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 17:13

I know I really do need to make an appointment with GP as well.

"Have you had your thyroid checked? Feeling cold can be a symptom it's on the fritz."

It can be, but not having the heating on when it is 5 degrees outside is a bit much. I hate feeling cold, and I would rather keep my coat on than make someone feel that they have to put their heating on if they can't afford it.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 17:29

I would never expect anyone to put theirs on if they cant afford it either, I guess I muct look like the michelin man at certain times being all bundled up lol .

I cant afford it also at times though end up making sacrifices just to do so as the cost is so high.

As my mother used to say 'you won't feel the benefit!'

I am always over dressed according to others. Always multiple layers. I do live in an old cold and draughty farmhouse with single glazing. In the winter I wear 2 coats - not out and about though - then I freeze to fit in. But I overheat in modern houses.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 17:42

I always feel like I am over dressed, maybe I look into things too much.

Maybe I just need to move to a warmer climate lol

Yanbu but I always feel uncomfortable if a guest leaves a coat on. I feel like I can’t relax. I’m also the same about my own coat. If I leave it on I feel like I’m about leave.

cherylt1990 · 02/11/2018 18:20

Yes totally get what u mean, thats why I am wary at times.

Try to bundle up as well as I canthough sometimes when I go to others houses, my sisters included they make you take your footwear off. Gets even colder then.

YOU WONT FEEL T'BENEFIT

Haggisfish · 02/11/2018 18:40

I’m always cold, too! My body temp is 36 on a good day and I have had everything checked etc. I just say ‘don’t mind me, o just run cold! Sorry!’.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/11/2018 18:40

"Yanbu but I always feel uncomfortable if a guest leaves a coat on."

Fortunately that never happens in my house because we don't like being cold, so our house is always warm.

"they make you take your footwear off. Gets even colder then."

Take slippers when you visit.
