To want heads on platters? Utterly inappropriate school assembly

This is a fucking corker. I am fuming but I'd like the hive minds' view.

At DS assembly today. Topic is 'Evacuation: WW2'. All good. Actually, they've done a great job and it's really excellent. Then this.

Towards the end, Christine Aguilera's 'Candyman' comes on. I'm watching open mouthed. I still cannot believe it.

MN: let me refresh you on the 'choicest' lyrics.

He's a one stop shop, makes the panties drop

He took me to the Spider club on Hollywood and Vine
We drank champagne, and we danced all night

He's a one stop shop, makes my cherry pop

And no, MN - this was NOT the radio edit.

And then to cap it all off for some inexplicable reason we are treated to two renditions of Don't Stop Believin' by Journey

A singer in a smoky room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on, and on, and on

WTAF? Did I smoke crack this morning and enter into a parallel dimension? I am a teacher, that another member of my profession could fuck up so royally is just, wow.

I don't want my nine year old son to be singing this in a school assembly, or listening to words that objectify women and glorify alcohol. Turns out the kids were practicing the dance moves to Candyman for three weeks!

I remember in the early 80s “Relax” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood being banned by the BBC. It was number one in the charts for weeks. It seems totally innocuous now in comparison with modern lyrics.

Feenie · 04/11/2018 12:15

I don't think it does - it's still quite shocking to me.

Indeed. That was also the era when Monty Python's Life of Brian was banned by numerous local authorities, and a few nation states, for being blasphemous. We have gone from one extreme to the other in a remarkably short period of time.

We immature Scousers, aged 6, used to sing "Relax, don't do it - pick yer nose and chew it."

@kitnkaboodle - your spelling is correct. I always thought his name was chosen because it's an anagram of 'oral sex' but a quick Google search just now tells me that's not true (Rose is his father's last name, his first name used to be William and just before the band cracked the big time he changed it to "W. Axl Rose"). Sorry, I digress Grin

liverbird10 · 05/11/2018 08:43

@Mincingfuckdragon - your name is almost as epic as Axl Rose's. Grin

I read that his adopted name was an anagram of oral sex in Smash Hits when I was 14, and had believed it until I saw your post!

Mincingfuckdragon · 05/11/2018 09:07

@liverbird10 I think I read the same edition of Smash Hits! So funny.

(I saw the term "mincing fuckdragon" on a lawyer's forum of all places - it was the best insult I'd seen in years, so I adopted it when I name changed a few months ago...)

God, I was watching Footballers' Wives when I was 9 🤷🏻‍♀️

Feenie · 05/11/2018 12:46

But not in school.

liverbird10 · 05/11/2018 13:33

I lived in the States as a pre-teen/early teen.

We watched the following films in class at the end of the year:

Terminator 2
Boys N The Hood
Arachnobhopia
Ghost

I think a few posters are missing the point which is - this isn't necessarily a thread about censorship but more crap judgment of a teaching professional.

As for Candyman having a Glen Miller vibe?!!!!! Yes if your totally devoid of a musical education, maybe Wink

kitnkaboodle · 05/11/2018 16:58

OP - did you speak to the school today??
