To believe that fireworks shouldn’t be available to the general public?

Fireworks at this time of night!!!

I’m partial to a sparkler don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t agree with fireworks being readily available for joe public. Particularly when people let them off after 11pm!

I’m not saying get rid of them all together but make it stricter so they’re only let off in safe environments by people who’ve had adequate training who then clean everything up and it’s all done and dusted before 11pm.

Am I getting old??

I agree OP, entirely. Public displays? Fine. There's no need for Joe Public to have personal access to pyrotechnics and from the stupidity and selfishness of some, there are compelling reasons not to allow general sale.

The ridiculous 'excuses', eg. nobody HAS to own a pet, solidify the reasoning to keep fireworks safely away from these people.

Daniellamoss · 03/11/2018 08:54

My son loves fireworks just not the loud ones they should be used in a controlled environment. They also have an age restriction on them but i do not see the problem with people setting them off, you can get relaxation tablets for pets. Personally it's the cost of them to celebrate guy fawks who tried to blow up parliament we then srt off fireworks which baffles me. We may as well set money on fire 😂

Thesearmsofmine · 03/11/2018 08:57

I just went onto Facebook to see a video has been posted by the police showing a fire engine being attacked with fireworks earlier this week in Bradford. It’s sickening.

li1972 · 03/11/2018 09:02

I agree. 100%. Fireworks should not be sold to anyone without them having adequate training. They should only be used on designated nights.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/11/2018 09:10

I was always on Team Guy Fawkes anyway...

mydogisthebest · 03/11/2018 10:50

Daniellamoss , yes you can get relaxation tablets for pets but often they don't work. Even if they do work do you honestly think it is ok to be giving them every night for over 2 weeks? Lots of dog owners have to resort to much stronger drugs for their loved pets literally knocking them out.

You think it is ok for people to set them off. Is that night after night long before and long after the actual bonfire night date of 5th November? Do you live in an area where fireworks are let off for such a long period?

I can only think posters who don't see a problem don't live somewhere where people are letting fireworks off for such long periods. Not even the pretty ones but the loud banging ones. They often start early, sometimes even before it is dark and can go on to well after midnight. They can cause upset and distress to cats, dogs, pet rabbits, horses, wildlife, babies, young children, the elderly.

Maybe some of you should look at the FAB anti random firework page to see just some of the stories of the distress and damage fireworks cause.

YANBU. I love fireworks but they're bloody dangerous in the wrong hands.

hailstone1 · 03/11/2018 11:05

I agree with organised displays only. Watching my dog jump and shake every time one goes off, people with PTSD. Our delightful neighbour managed to set part of his garden on fire this year.

NCP81 · 03/11/2018 11:39
  • Yes they should be only available for organised display and they should be silent! I think the Chinese invented them and they were silent then?*

Absolutely not. My DS is blind and misses out on so many things. You can't even describe what fireworks look like in the sky, but at least he can hear all the different bangs and squeals and can be included with everyone else enjoying fireworks. I would rather see fireworks banned altogether than see silent ones.

The sensible option is to try and stop the fireworks being dragged out for weeks. But that would be hard to police.

SassitudeandSparkle · 03/11/2018 11:53

This comes up every year about pets and fireworks. Yes it lasts a few weeks but dogs bark all year round! Noise complaints can go both ways!

Tiscold · 03/11/2018 11:54

Fireworks shouldn't be bloody silent, stupid idea.

I agree public displays only but part of the fun of fireworks is hearing them go off and the loud bangs.

Desecratedcoconut · 03/11/2018 11:57

I think fireworks should be silent and only have a dull glow and should spell "sorry, so very sorry" across the night's sky.

RomanyRoots · 03/11/2018 12:20

How do you get the council to organise a display for your birthday, or other family occasions, I doubt they'd be interested.
I think you just have to suck it up like generations before us.

reallyanotherone · 03/11/2018 12:27

The house at the back of us had fireworks in their garden last year.

One went wonky. Hit our roof, rolled off, set fire to a kids garden chair and the decking.

Fortunately it self extinguished but scared the hell out of us, and our whole house could have gone up. Not to mention if any of us had been outside.

They didn’t even come round to apologise. I went round the next day but it’s a block of flats and no one would answer the buzzer.

Arseholes.

AGHHHH · 03/11/2018 12:30

Silent fireworks.

....

😂😂

AGHHHH · 03/11/2018 12:32

"here it comes!!!...."

Pft

Shitlandpony · 03/11/2018 12:35

Some places do silent fireworks , I think it’s a great idea. It’s the noise which cause so much trauma to people and animals.

BlueJava · 03/11/2018 12:35

Completely agree they should be at organised, public displays only. Dangerous, can easily get into the wrong hands, puts emergency services under pressure. Nothing wrong with enjoying them at an organised display if you like them.

Bodicea · 03/11/2018 12:51

Agree about the barking. Fireworks are for a few weeks of the year.Dogs are a far bigger nuicence in the grand scheme of things. And am sure more people are injured by dog attacks than fireworks. Let’s ban them instead.

DeadCertain · 03/11/2018 12:55

The light / way the light plays can also cause distress to some e.g., war veterans, not simply the noise.

Not suggesting they should be banned - just clarifying!

Shitlandpony · 03/11/2018 13:00

DeadCertain I didn’t realise that, everything that I had read about it mentioned the noise, which of course you can’t shut out with curtains.

My autistic daughter is not coping with it at all well this year, I think I am going to have to see if the GP can prescribe anything for her.

VeganCow · 03/11/2018 13:01

I fucking hate them, they do a lot of harm. Think about wild animals as well as pets. No harm would come to anyone if they were banned, whose life would be affected if they never saw a firework again?

MidnightAura · 03/11/2018 13:02

I’ve thought this for years about fireworks. I hate them. There was a child blinded by a firework round here after a sparkler was thrown in her face by some kids. Not to mention the trauma they cause pets and wildlife not to mention some groups of vulnerable people.

I

DeadCertain · 03/11/2018 13:05

Shitlandpony No it's not something that people tend to consider - what I do sometimes if things aren't great is have a shower; the noise gets rid of much of the sound if I let the water cascade over my head / ears, the water on my skin reminds me where I am and I find the sensation comforting. Would anything like that perhaps help your daughter? A sensory experience that overrides (somewhat) an unpleasant one if that makes any sense?

Shitlandpony · 03/11/2018 13:09

I have tried everything non medical that I can think of, yesterday was particularly bad as went on from 6pm until after 11pm.
I would take her away if I knew it was kept to certain days but the trouble is that it goes on for the next three months.
A lot of it last night sounded like anti social behaviour issues with teenagers throwing them, very loud though.
We have a shop nearby that is shut all year and then opens from October until the end of December that sells them. I don’t understand how they can afford to pay the business rates for it to stay there for the other nine months.
