To think that people shopping in Aldi shouldn’t insist on packing bags at checkout

Just, this. I was shopping tonight and two customers in front of me did this and I was really annoyed. While waiting I thought that Aldi should charge a fee for people who do this. It’s not fair on customers who do it the correct way. A surcharge would work, like it did with carrier bags. If everyone insisted on doing this surely it would drive prices up.

Are you actually for real? You live in the real world right? Some people struggle buying food let alone charging them for the way the pack because "it's not the correct way" ie your way! Get a grip honest to god what a pathetic post i shop at aldi and lidl and have my bags open and ready in the trolley never had anyone complain about how i pack my shopping because people tend to ignore what you do and do not judge you on such a petty thing. 😂

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 03/11/2018 08:51

When Aldi opened here a few years ago, the staff “trained” customers in the correct till procedure. Grin

I love the people on this thread who don’t think the rules apply to them. If you don’t have a disability and want to pack at lesuire and chat while you do it that’s absolutely fine. Just don’t do it in Aldi!

FleurDeLips · 03/11/2018 08:51

I have some issues with my town Aldi
They wildly underestimated its popularity and already had to extend the car park once (still too small), it’s also on the worst most slow moving congested road. I have seen actual fights in the car park/road area as I think people get so hyped up by the speed packing when they get out and are faced with the over 60’s very slow reverse or of a space and 20 min wait to pull out onto the main road it blows their mind

I have a favourite Aldi cashier, she’s so fast I always try to choose her till. If I am a basket I will pack if a trolley I will go to packing bench although have to evict all the kids off if first

laurG · 03/11/2018 08:54

I don’t get what the point of tge packing bench is or how it saves money? There are always queues regardless of whether people use the system or not. How on earth does putting your shopping back in to the trolley to repack again help? They need more tolls or self service. So yabu. It’s a stupid system.

FleurDeLips · 03/11/2018 09:00

If I have a ton of shopping and kids with me it’s sometimes easier to just dump the whole lot into the trolley randomly and go over to the packing bench then organise it into bags properly

I don’t know how it actually saves them money to be honest, more customers? but it’s up to them to have their own USP and faster shopping is appealing to some and maybe not others. They don’t chit chat much, you pay faster and overall I like it as do many others!

Bananacakes · 03/11/2018 09:02

There’s 3 I go to regularly and no one uses the packing shelf? You have open bags in your trolley and just fire everything in. I have 3 under 5’s there’s no way I could do it twice.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 03/11/2018 09:08

FleurDeLips That sounds very familiar. ..

OldmaidLyonsmaid23 · 03/11/2018 09:57

If you use a basket you take it with you and refill it after scanning...then go to the packing shelf... it's easy! Our local Lidl has a self checkout and I use an empty basket in the bagging area and then fiddle at the shelf after..I always have a nightmare packing as I go at any self checkouts the bag always falls over or refuses to stay open

anewyear · 03/11/2018 10:03

saltandvinegarcrisps1 & MysteriesOfTheOrganism
How do you hold your purse in your hand whilst trying to pack the trolley/or bags?
See, I once had some one try to grab my purse as I'd left it by the card machine.. it now stays in my bag till I've packed my trolley/bags.

We have 4 Aldi's to choose from, 3 different towns, within a 9 mile radius.. only one of them has notices up on the tills, asking customers not to pack at the tills. Still people take no notice.

On another note.. I was in B&M yesterday, I had a trolley full.
Lots of large items ie washing up liquid, washing powder, clothes conditioner, Xmas crackers 😬 etc
Started putting my shopping on conveyer belt when the person in front finished putting their shopping on the belt.
Customer paid and so the cashier started putting mine through, I still had a few bits left in the trolley, the front of the conveyer belt was starting to was filling up, and still items to go through.
No offer of help to put things in bags, nothing, she was still trying to get the last few bits through, as I started to pack my bags.
So I thought sod this, and leisurely packed my bags.
And then rummaged around in my purse sized bag, to get my purse out, to pay..

Not a very nice ageist post there Fleur

ForalltheSaints · 03/11/2018 10:14

The OP perhaps if it so upsetting, should shop elsewhere. As for charging extra for packing bags at the checkout, this would be another extra charge of the type favoured by Ryanair, and so if we had an Aldi and they asked my view I would object strongly.

Lweji · 03/11/2018 10:18

So I thought sod this, and leisurely packed my bags.

I'm also guilty of this.

Particularly in one supermarket where they have a single queue and call new customers only when the other customer is already paying.
And I always complain to them about this too.

Runnynosehunny · 03/11/2018 10:25

My dh works in a factory and does a lot of packing and things at work, he is generally quite speedy at anything like that. He loves Aldi and the speed packing. The other day he told me the cashier told him he was a very fast packer 'for a man' which he was pleased about.

NutElla5x · 03/11/2018 10:42

Hahaha are you actually for real? What next? When it's time to pay up a timer is set to ensure it doesn't take you more than an allotted 35 seconds to hand the money/card over otherwise an alarm goes off and an instant fine and ban imposed just so that very important people like yourself, who can't possibly spare the few minutes it might take someone to pack and pay,are happy.Get over yourself and shop online if your times so precious.Jeeez.

Willow2017 · 03/11/2018 11:05

I'm really confused at this post. Firstly i've never and never would shop at Aldi anyway
Sbuto it doesnt affect you in any way?
i have never been at any supermarket where people don't pack their shopping at the checkout as its going through the till. Where are we supposed to pack it?
In aldi you pack quickly or at the packing shelf its really not difficult to understand.

I presume throw it in the trolley and then pack it outside in the cold by the car?
No rtt.

I pack my shopping as its coming through and i do it as quickly as i can but steadily. If other people in the queue don't like that then its tough luck.
Thats fine in any other supermarket.

Dont understand your ire as you dont even shop in aldi!

ClenchQueen · 03/11/2018 11:14

I don't get the point of going through the checkout quickly just to spend more time packing. It doesn't save you any time - in fact, it wastes your time.

ClenchQueen · 03/11/2018 11:19

So, I mean, you might not be "held up" at the till because you go through it quick but you'll be "held up" by going to the bench to pack. What's the difference? Confused

Runnynosehunny · 03/11/2018 11:21

I don't get the point of going through the checkout quickly just to spend more time packing. It doesn't save you any time - in fact, it wastes your time.

The point is that is saves the cashiers time and saves on the supermarket wage bill as they will need less staff. This is passed on to shoppers in lower grocery bills.

It also does save time if you are able to keep up with the cashier and pack really fast. But otherwise it may be a little slower, but you can console yourself with the idea you are saving money.

ClenchQueen · 03/11/2018 11:29

Ok I get that but people here are saying they like it because it saves them time going through the checkout quicker - only to then spend their time standing at a bench packing.

Runnynosehunny · 03/11/2018 11:52

I agree putting everything back in the trolley and packing at the bench is slower overall. I think the ones who are saving time are the speed packers. They probably have a system like people mention above of loading the belt with heavy items first and using those large bags in the trolley. Then they can quickly put everything straight into the bags as it is scanned.

What they don't like are people who try to pack slowly (or at normal speed Wink) at the tills. Ideally you have to keep up with the cashier or you are holding up the whole queue.

ToddlerTamerMumma · 03/11/2018 12:09

Okay ... confession time. I'm just back from "The Aldi" (who the hell calls it that and why?!) and packed my bags at the till because I genuinely had no idea the bench at the back of the store was the bit where you pack your bags! I promise I didn't have a clue. Ive never seen anyone use it except people to lean on whilst waiting for a taxi!? The cashiers flinging my goods down the checkout now seems more reasonable - I just thought they were all bad at customer service

I apologise to everyone I'm annoying by packing at the checkout and now I know the rules I'll use the bench!

VeganCow · 03/11/2018 12:18

Aldi is getting my money that I have worked hard for. So, I will not be dictated to about how fast or slow or in the manner I pack. Why should Aldi have 'rules' about packing whereas other supermarkets don't? They are not doing me a favour by letting me shop there, and the customer always comes first. Until the moment they have my money in their till, I am free to walk out at any time and I would do exactly that, leaving all my shopping right there if anyone told me that I am not following the 'rules'

It's kind of an unwritten rule isn't it that you don't pack at the till in Aldi(and Lidl). There isn't the room and it's a no frills supermarket, that's what the counter is for. Kwik Save was also like this years ago.

Oldraver · 03/11/2018 13:32

When our Aldi opened a few yeas ago they tried to make everyone do the packing at the shelf.

They never managed it and almost everyone packs into the trolley.

I once saw a kerfuffle as a bloke had a full basket and wanted to pack into the basket, but Aldi rules say you have to leave the basket at the beginning of the conveyer...so therefore no choice but to pack into a bag

He got the huff and chucked the basket onto his shopping on the conveyor and stomped off, causing mayhem for a while as they didnt know how to deal with it
