Posting here for traffic. Please please can we keep it nice and civil. I need an answer asap.

My mother has been arrested and is awaiting questioning or whatever.

I know this for a fact. However, due to GDPR apparently the police can neither confirm nor deny she is there.

I need her house key to go and pick up her puppy who is currently alone in the house and hasn't been fed for around 6 hours.

Wtf am I meant to do.

They won't tell me she's there and so therefore they can't let me pick up the key as that would be confirming she's there and I'm going round in circles and the dog needs collected and fed ASAP.

Sorry, I wan't clear. I meant at the police station. The food there is terrible.

:o:o

Stop it! :o

I'd second the advice of 101 and trying to be put through to the option of those already in custody, quickly explain you don't need any details confirming, but you know that your mum is in custody, her name, her address etc etc. She has a pet pup at home who will be without food, in an unsanitary condition cos I'll be it's peeing and pooing everywhere having been left that few hours, you've spent the evening trying to gain access to the key but keep getting told GDPR is stopping this. As I see it, this leaves the option of- a they go and speak with your mum and then sort out getting you the key to collect, B- they send a PCSO out to the pup or C- they arrange with social services that they deal with mum's dog.

A is the most plausible and would reduce further stretching already struggling services.

You'd have hoped between the two of them, police and social services they'd have thought about the dog, not least of all, because I'm assuming that as your mum has a social worker she has extra needs, and the last thing she will need is to go home to a hungry dog who's been using the whole house as a toilet, and probably rolled about in it too. Talk about adding on stress!

hungryhippo90 · 02/11/2018 01:38

It'll , not I'll ! No one needs to worry about me peeing and pooing everywhere!!

QueenDoris · 02/11/2018 01:42

I fear the puppy is probably reading this thread and getting all excited thinking that sausages are coming his way. Little tail wagging. Looking at the letterbox expecting some lovely bangers to appear. But no. Just some crappy dried Iams when eventually mummy sobers up and is released. And no sausages. As usual. Ho hum

LunaTheCat · 02/11/2018 01:44

You are so lovely to be concerned about pup. Sounds like a very stressful situation - take care of yourself too.

worridmum · 02/11/2018 01:48

no one would say its fine to leave a toddler for 24 hours + if they have water they will be fine a puppy (that has been whinned if basically a dog verson of a toddler.

A adult dog would be ok as long as they had water but a puppy is too young for this just like a adult human is "fine" without eating for 24 hours but a young child would not be.

abacucat · 02/11/2018 01:53

A young child would not starve in 24 hours. They may come to serious harm though. You can not leave a toddler alone in a house for a few hours without risking them seriously injuring themselves. Most puppies left alone for a few hours will be in a crate or a room where they are safe. It really is not the same thing. The puppy will be very distressed, but if left safely will be okay physically.

RainbowsArePretty · 02/11/2018 02:29

I hope you have been given keys

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 02/11/2018 02:44

Your mum sounds really lovely 😳

GunpowderGelatine · 02/11/2018 06:48

Can't believe people are advising the OP to break in. How nice for her mum, gets arrested then comes home and has to deal with a broken window (when in fact it was probably all sorted when she was booked in). And what kind of locksmith do people think will give a person access to someone else's house?!

As for calling 999 and comparing this with leaving a toddler - I fucking despair. Have a word with yourselves some of you

I did LOL at posting sausages through the door though (not a bad idea!). Hope you got it sorted anyway OP

Ragevibration · 02/11/2018 07:01

Morning.

I really can't thank you all for the advice. Mumsnet is great sometimes.

As is to be expected in AIBU... I hope the two people who made nasty comments feel good about themselves. You have absolutely no idea of the scenario (and, for the record, hasn't touched a drop of alcohol in over 30 years) and does have additional needs hence the social worker.

I finally got to speak to an actual police officer at around 12.30 who advised that my mother was being released within the next few minutes and would be being taken home.

She messaged me and let me know she got home safely and the puppy was fine - a little hungry but the police had put water out for him and secured him in the kitchen before they took her away.

And even though I am absolutely shattered and drained this morning - the sausages comment really really made me chuckle 😁

Away to go and sort some things out now and then go up to see my mum for a chat about what happens next etc... But really thank you for everyone who posted helpful advice (and about sausages!)

OscarWildesGreenCarnation · 02/11/2018 07:21

Hadn't posted before, but glad all seems well. Take care OP.

Goodfood1 · 02/11/2018 07:29

So glad it is all sorted for now, but please when you go round don't forget the sausages ;)

LittleBookofCalm · 02/11/2018 07:33

aww, glad the puppy was ok, hope you and your mum are too, and of course the police would try and make sure puppy was ok with water Bear

LittleBookofCalm · 02/11/2018 07:33

can you get yourself a spare key to your mums now?

OliviaStabler · 02/11/2018 07:37

Sorry, I wan't clear. I meant at the police station. The food there is terrible.

😂😂😂 Thanks. I really needed a good laugh.

Glad all is well OP

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/11/2018 08:04

Sorry but no one can say that the puppy will be fine. No one knows if it has water, when it was last fed, if it's warm enough or anything like that.

THIS ^

It could have drunk any water, tipped up its bowl, got itself stuck down the side of a heavy piece of furniture, chewed through an electric wire, be choking on some piece of junk it has managed to get hold of . . .

A puppy's capacity for self-destruction is almost infinite - it's a great relief that the police had the nous to do what they could to ensure it was safe, but you can't always rely on this.

Hope everything is sorted satisfactorily soo OP. Maybe you DM will consider letting you have a spare key for emergencies? Hopefully she won't get arrested again, but she could have an accident or something, and there would be a similar problem.

RainbowsArePretty · 02/11/2018 08:28

Glad the puppy is ok
