To Hate The Phrase BabyWearing

LetTheDogsOut · 01/11/2018 21:34

I don't really know why but the term 'babywearing' really gets my goat!
You don't 'wear' a baby fgs!
I've seen very large toddlers in a sling and it just looks so uncomfortable for all concerned. I'd be so worried about tripping over and squishing the baby.
But, each to there own as they say.
The term just annoys meGrin

I'd never heard it used for your own child, until I came on here.

It was an easy way of relating the recommendation for a Newborn in Foster with certain needs, when report writing.

I've never heard it used in RL, by a Mum, with her biological baby.

NameChangeCuddleBums · 01/11/2018 21:52

I don’t like the term either but I do use a baby carrier - great for dog walks.

PantTwizzler · 01/11/2018 21:53

YANBU. Weird and silly phrase. I get the theory of carrying the baby as much as possible and I suppose the whole point is that you aren’t “carrying” because your hands are free — but the baby isn’t an item of clothing or an accessory...!

Nothisispatrick · 01/11/2018 21:56

Me too! It’s a hideous phrase, and I carry dd in a sling or carrier all the time. I’m not ‘wearing’ her though.

LaurieMarlow · 01/11/2018 22:02

I hate the phrase too. Both silly and pretentious at the same time. And I'm a fan of slings/carriers.

whatsnewchoochoo · 01/11/2018 22:02

I don't like the term. However I carry my nearly 2 year DS in a ring sling and it's not uncomfy at all

AntiHop · 01/11/2018 22:06

I don't have a problem with it.

I used a sling a lot, including when dd was a toddler, and it isn't uncomfortable if you choose an appropriate sling.

LetTheDogsOut · 01/11/2018 22:06

Glad you agree, I have no problem with somebody carrying their baby in a sling, but they are not wearing the baby!
There's a woman I work with who is a babywearing consultantConfused she reckons she carries her 4 year old up mountains in a sling! She says she has never used a pram or buggy.
I used to love pushing my baby in a lovely pram, used to walk miles and load up with shopping on the way home. Call me old fashioned........

OP posts:
rainbowquack · 01/11/2018 22:12

I have bigger things to get worked up about. This isn't even on my radar.

MoaningSickness · 01/11/2018 22:15

Prams/pushchairs are great for shopping/ being in town etc but not good if you are walking across fields with rough narrow tracks/over stiles etc.

I use both depending on what I'm doing. Toddler is very happy with either. (No discomfort).

Im not keen on the term 'babywearing' but 'baby carrying' is vague to the point uselessness. We generally call it 'slinging', but then you end up with weird sentences like 'I'm slinging the baby into the woods...' which sounds rather more violent than reality.

pandarific · 01/11/2018 22:16

It is a bit annoying - it's just using a sling basically, isn't it?

SemperIdem · 01/11/2018 22:19

Can’t get het up over this one. Imagine “baby wearing” is rather more old fashioned than pushing a pram.

I never used a carrier and a pram. Baby wasn’t that keen on being carried.

SemperIdem · 01/11/2018 22:20

Not sure where the random never came from there Hmm

whatsnewchoochoo · 01/11/2018 22:20

I'm feeling judgement from you now. I get you don't like slings, no one said you had to. But my kid always hated his pram, we've used it about 10x in his life. So you push your pram and illl use a sling and let's just get on with, hey?

HellenaHandbasket · 01/11/2018 22:22

Well, your gripe clearly isn't just with the term, but the action itself. You're being a bit disingenuous.

I have never heard anyone use the term seriously in real life, I do understand where it comes from.

LetTheDogsOut · 01/11/2018 22:22

moaning Grin slinging the baby into the woods doesn't sound ideal.

rainbowquack if you're not interested and it's not on your radar why go to the bother of contributing to the thread?Confused

Its not the actual action of putting a little baby in a sling they I object to, it's the term 'babywearing' that annoys me.
Just my opinion that I'm pondering with you as I'm sat finishing the Halloween sweets!
I'm sure there are lots of phrases that annoy people, this one is my pet hateWink

You do you but there's no call to judge people who do it differently. I'm going to have to carry my baby as I can't use a pram

HellenaHandbasket · 01/11/2018 22:25

But it isn't just the phrase is it? You are criticising the activity. Which seems odd, as carrying babies in slings is as old as the hills.

HellenaHandbasket · 01/11/2018 22:26

I've seen very large toddlers in a sling and it just looks so uncomfortable for all concerned.

It's not, done properly.

LetTheDogsOut · 01/11/2018 22:26

Hellena I'm not against people using slings! I find it hard to believe that it's comfortable carrying a 4year old up a mountain but if that's what they do them good for them.
Just don't call it 'babywearing!!

OP posts:
NoMudNoLotus · 01/11/2018 22:28

It doesn't bother me one bit because it accurately reflects what i needed to do with both of my babies for the first 9ish months.

LetTheDogsOut · 01/11/2018 22:29

I'm not against the action, just the phrase!!
Did you know, there's actually a 'school of babywearing'Grin

OP posts:
NotUmbongoUnchained · 01/11/2018 22:30

But you are kind of wearing the baby. I always wore mine in my back like a rucksack. I’d say wearing a rucksack, so I said baby wearing.

This thread isn’t about that though, it’s clearly you just wanting to be a bitch about people who use slings.

RebeccaCloud9 · 01/11/2018 22:30

I totally agree, it's so cringey! I think the only people who use the term seriously are hippy dippy 'Earth mother' types.

FrankensteinsKnuckleDuster · 01/11/2018 22:31

You wear a bag, or a coat.

You carry a baby/child.

I loved my manduca reminisces
