To serve M&S mashed potato?!

Obviously this is a lighthearted AIBU! Having another couple for dinner Saturday night. One of whom is what he terms a “very plain eater”. As a result am making steak/veggies/pepper sauce for main course. Would I be unreasonable to serve M&S mash rather than peeling/ boiling/mashing my own? Partner won’t be home from work until half hour before the guests are due so can’t be of help. I accept it’s lazy but would it look like I’ve served a bad substitute rather than the homemade stuff which has the potential not to be great?!

If it's the m&s ultimate mash go for it- I prefer it to my dp homemade 😀

yanbu

Sounds all yummy to me. Sometimes the microwave mash can taste slightly different to home made so maybe add extra butter.

Absolutely not - it's the stuff of dreams! (just hide the packaging)

catlovingdoctor · 01/11/2018 20:46

Oh god, you must! It’s so nice!

I almost always buy fresh mash rather than make it. I just cba with all the peeling, cutting, boiling, mashing. Bought is tastier, there's nothing in there I wouldn't add if making it myself and I couldn't give two hoots if someone thinks it's lazy! However imo Marks fresh mash is a bit "gluey". I much prefer Tesco Finest buttery mash Smile.

I haven't peeled a potato in years.

Ask a man for their views maybe lol.

Frozen mash FTW.

Littleheart5 · 01/11/2018 21:05

CantSleep now you’ve made me think I should have been testing out a few brands during the week! Grin
My partner is old fashioned and would balk at the money waste! (Although will buy plenty of new wine to be fair to him)

Yes, YABU - you should Sainsbury’s mashed potato instead - it is much nicer!

HildaZelda · 01/11/2018 21:08

Aldi mash is lovely, Avoid Tesco's though.

Soontobe60 · 01/11/2018 21:09

ASDA finest is also great. Now I only make my own if the whole family are coming round.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 01/11/2018 21:10

YANBU. Like pp I haven't made actual mash for years! We really enjoy the m & s mash

Frozen mash with extra butter will taste more like homemade if that concerns you. All the ready meal mashes have that slightly too starchy (gluey) thing going on.

chickywoo · 01/11/2018 21:39

If your having steak you need chips not mash! home made fried chips😋

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 01/11/2018 21:40

Tescos is the nicest one.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 01/11/2018 21:42

Lidl's chilled mash is really horrible, thick and tasteless which is a shame as I like most of their stuff. Definitely go for the Marks one though it's delicious.

Athena51 · 01/11/2018 21:44

I love shop bought mash, it's easy and it doesn't have lumps. Lumpy mash makes me feel queasy Smile

PrincessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 01/11/2018 21:49

I've never bought mashed potato. Always made my own. Beginning to think I'm missing a trick though - is it actually nice? I just assumed it would be shit. I adore mashed potato. It's the food of the gods in my opinion.

Ffs. This thread is making me want mashed potato right now.

GuiltyPleasure · 01/11/2018 21:57

I'm a really fussy eater & M&S mash sounds fine. But as really fussy eater I'd want the peppercorn sauce on the side (so I could avoid it!)

fieldgold · 01/11/2018 22:30

Will men care. But as usual women will mash.

13thWarriorWitch · 01/11/2018 22:35

I second the pp who said frozen mash is the way to go. Not Aunt Bessie though. The patties are too big and they "burn" before the whole dish is heated through if you need to make a lot.

BreconBeBuggered · 01/11/2018 22:36

Home made mash with the right kind of potatoes beats anything you can buy ready prepared. I like a creamy, buttery potato like Mariola, Marfona or Sunita. Double cream, real butter, salt, paramedics on standby. Yum.
