is cute and would be nice if my friend had a boy or a girl in the Spring?

I have a name which shortens to a "y" ending - like Penelope to Penny (but not that). I've never liked the nickname form (could just about tolerate Pen equvalent but not Penny). Giving the formal version and using the nickname in the family gives the child, and later the adult, a choice. I have at had times had groups of people who have used the Penny version but currently I have trained all but one of my friends , acquaintances and work contacts to us the full name.

In Scotland it seems common to have father called Bob and son called Bobby or Bill and Billy etc. This is probably dying out with the practice of calling sons after their fathers, but it makes the Bobby form seem childish.

whiskybysidedoor · 01/11/2018 17:34

It’s slang for poo round here too.

Other than that it’s ok until the child gets to about 7 or 8 then it’s quite tricky to pull off as a stand-alone name.

whiskybysidedoor · 01/11/2018 17:36

You’ve also got to pray she doesn’t grow up with big boobs.

Haworthia · 01/11/2018 17:39

I knew a man who was christened Bobbie. He was a tall, burly bloke and really didn’t suit the cutesy spelling.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/11/2018 17:39

Bobbie is the worst hairdresser I’ve ever had, and Bobby is the near-feral child who gets the same bus as me quite often in the morning.

Safe to say it’s not a favourite of mine with either spelling! :o

daisypond · 01/11/2018 17:52

No. Might be OK as a diminutive for Roberta for a girl, but definitely not for a boy. I wouldn't want to burden a child with a "cute" name as their formal name.

BertramKibbler · 01/11/2018 17:53

It’s a very cute name but I think Roberta or Robert would be a handy backup in case they want something more serious as an adult

CwtchesAreTheBest · 01/11/2018 17:58

Too much like a nickname or pet name!

UserNotBot · 01/11/2018 18:02

My friend in her 20's is Bobbie. Just Bobbie, not short for anything, named after her grandfather. She's a police officer.

UserNotBot · 01/11/2018 18:06

I've never thought about the old name for coppers being bobbies! Anyhow, the post wasn't a joke she definitely is, and very well respected.

OrdinaryGirl · 01/11/2018 18:06

Yes as a NNZ for Roberta. Reminds me of the lovely heroine of The Railway Children. ❤️🚂

OrdinaryGirl · 01/11/2018 18:06

NNZ? NN! 🙄

user1981287 · 01/11/2018 18:12

I know of two girls called Bobbie. One is called Bobbie Jo and the other is called Bobbie Lee May.

Personally I am not a fan unless as a nickname for Roberta, Robyn etc

Holdingonbarely · 01/11/2018 18:23

Sounds common as muck

Oooh, never heard of the poo version. Interesting!

PerfPower · 01/11/2018 22:48

Where I'm from it's a poo, and also sometimes a penis. So I wouldn't.

DancingForTheDog · 01/11/2018 23:01

I'm showimg my age but Bobbie makes me think of Bobbie Waterbury from The Railway Children (Jenny Agater character), and Bobbie Wickham from the Jeeves and Wooster books - head girl, tally ho types. I like it.

Lilyhatesjaz · 01/11/2018 23:14

There is a Bobbie in marvel agents of shield but I can't remember what it's short for.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/11/2018 23:19

I like Bobbie for a girl or a boy but I would avoid using it as a given name.
Robert
Roberta
Etc that can be shortened

Bouledeneige · 01/11/2018 23:19

Love Bobby for a girl

Jamieson90 · 01/11/2018 23:42

I've worked in Education for 10 years and I've known lots of Bobbies and all of them have shown very challenging behaviour.

In fact, talking to my teacher friends, Callums, Kaydens, Maisons and Tylers seem to attract trouble too.

CandyCreeper · 01/11/2018 23:46

its our female cats name.

what part of the uk is it short for poo? never heard that one.

PickAChew · 01/11/2018 23:48

It is a lovely and unisex name. Tends to be short for Robert or Roberta, though, doesn't it?

ButchyRestingFace · 01/11/2018 23:48

Bobbie is okay.

I know someone who calls herself 'Bobs' and that gets on my tits.
