I'm currently waiting an overnight delivery from H&M, I would have loved to have popped down to my local H&M and bought the items there and saved myself £5.99 but the items aren't available in store.

My Hermes delivery guy is great though so I should receive the order shortly.

Glad I didn't order from Zara. 🙊

Huskylover1 · 31/10/2018 09:25

FFS, it's 2018, and you have the internet at your fingertips. Why the fuck would you trudge around shops for hours on end, when you can order with one click? Oh, and let's not forget that the parking fees in town (plus the fuel to get there) costs MORE THAN DELIVERY TO YOUR DOOR. Yes Claire I'm talking to you.

JakeBallardswife · 31/10/2018 09:28

Recently had this with Sainsburys clothing, had it delivered to my small local store. Took 6 days, but wasn't in a hurry. They said if doesn't fit either take back to them in original packaging or back to a store that sells clothing. So, doesn't fit and off we trot to the bigger store 25 mins drive away. Get there and queue at customer services to be advised ( after 15 mins in queue) that they don't process the refunds I need to go to the instore Argos.

Instore Argos has power cut. Back to customer services, again told to just give it to Argos.

Go to Argos power back on, take clothing but can't give me proof that I've returned it or a refund straight away on the card I paid with. Aahhhh..

SistersOfHearsey

I see someone put 50p in the dick head then

I haven't heard that saying in years Grin

adaline · 31/10/2018 09:33

A lot of next-day deliveries will say in the small print "from date of despatch" or "if ordered before 12pm on a weekday", or "excluding weekends and bank holidays".

I've found the only companies who genuinely have next-day delivery are Argos and Pets at Home. Luckily I can get stuff ordered to work (open 7 days a week) so if I'm not there someone else can sign for it.

MrsStrowman · 31/10/2018 09:36

We were supposed to have a cot delivered today, I've arranged my work schedule to work from home today. Got in yesterday to a card saying they'd tried to deliver it. Called them they can't deliver it Wednesday is Thursday ok? No! I paid for a specified date delivery for a reason!! Don't even get me started on Dunelm mill, ordered a wardrobe a week later get an email not in stock we will refund you in five days. Item still showing as available online. Call up, oh it takes 24 hours for website to update definitely don't have them, might get more but not sure keep an eye on the website. Week later reappears as in stock on the website, order it again, repeat above shenanigans. 😡 I also prefer shopping in a shop but maternity wear doesn't exist outside of h and m and find me somewhere stocking nursery furniture in the high street where I can just go and see it and pick it up... 🙄

BrendasUmbrella · 31/10/2018 09:37

I paid for a Prime membership with my order which was supposed to come the next day and two days later I'm still waiting...

Eve · 31/10/2018 09:48

...if we need to keep all the shop assistants in work , what do we do with all the warehouse staff who pack and load , the courier companies staff who deliver plus all the IT staff keeping the online websites working , all the admin staff working behind the scenes on the accounting etc etc etc.

Are they all going to find jobs on the high street?

adaline · 31/10/2018 09:58

I don't think Prime means next day anymore, does it? Amazon's T&C's say:

"*One Day Delivery is 1 business day after dispatch, including Saturdays, but not including Public Holidays."

So 24 hours from the day the item is sent, but not 24 hours from when you place your order.

MrsOrMiss · 31/10/2018 10:01

My DD needed a tumble dryer. Went to all the stores online found one tha said next day delivery for this particular item (it wasn't the cheapest, but had next day delivery, hey ho, lets go) clicked the dryer, said it could be delivered the next day, clicked to pay and noticed the delivery date had changed! Earliest the could do was 2 days later.
Why say next day at the outset if it couldn't be fulfilled? Yeah, to get my money.
They also wanted £20 to plug it in install - £3 to take away the packaging - how can I check it's not damaged if the packaging is still on Hmm - and £10 to pick the 4 hour slot that was best for me. So, an extra £33 on top of the dryer price right there.
No, of course I didn't 'add' those extras.

Obvioulsy this makes me to blame for Debenhams closing down but that is my cross to bear
Surely it’s your blue cross?Grin

I am prepared to get flamed for this but I think, working in the industry, there are a lot of misconceptions about how courier services work. I spend my day dealing with customers who have late collections/deliveries etc and I really understand how annoying it is when the service doesn't go as planned

When you pay for guaranteed next day delivery the guarantee doesn't mean it will 100% occur, just that there is a money back guarantee in place. A bit like if your dishwasher comes with a guarantee it isn't guaranteed not to break, but will be fixed/replaced if it does

There are so many reasons that delays can happen. Vehicle breakdowns, drivers getting stuck in traffic, mechanical failures at the depot. Also the drivers have to get back to the depot by a certain time so that all the parcels they have collected can get sorted and sent on a trailer overnight. While a lot of people expect drivers to work until all deliveries/collections are done, if they get back to the depot too late that could affect 100+ other parcels for the sake of collecting or delivering a few others. The industry isn't perfect and I honestly can't see there being a quick fix anytime soon

Another issue comes down to individual drivers. As a PP mentioned earlier about a Hermes driver, some are terrible, but our local one is absolutely brilliant and really lovely. Many will have rules not to leave goods in bins etc, but when the drivers only get paid a small amount for items that are collected and delivered, and not for collection or delivery attempts, there isn’t much incentive

As I have said, I know it is a massive pain in the arse, but all couriers will have these problems every single day. It is unfortunately just the nature of the industry

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 31/10/2018 10:11

And I don’t often shop in the high street partly because last time I did go in to town (last Sunday) I parked just before 10am and after having breakfast and going to the cinema got back to the car at just after 2.30pm and it cost GBP8.75 in parking. And that’s not even the most expensive car park in the city.

ConfusedMum82 · 31/10/2018 10:18

Both Dorothy Perkins and Sainsbury's have been terrible with online orders recently. Paid for express delivery, sat in and both times the goods didn't arrive.
To make it worse, I then had to chase them, to be told the items I had bought and paid for were out of stock and both times I then had to wait 5 working days for a refund.
Queue mad dash into town to source replacements with miserable DD which was why I was shopping online.
Since though, Dorothy Perkins have driven me mad with spam. If the first time you use them they fuck up, you're hardly likely to bother again.

The only one I've ever found actually turns up the next day is Amazon Prime.

Piffle11 · 31/10/2018 10:32

Yes, because all disabled people are the same, aren't they Claire … I've just got a delivery from Zara and the dress is pulled in so many places - I could see a large pull right across the front of the dress before I'd even took it out of the packaging! Also the stitching is coming away in two separate places. I had a jacket from them once with gold stitching on a navy background, and the stitching was ripped and there was no tag on the jacket itself - clearly had been tried on many times as it just looked a bit manhandled. I don't know why anyone would think that's acceptable.

adaline · 31/10/2018 10:41

I am prepared to get flamed for this but I think, working in the industry, there are a lot of misconceptions about how courier services work.

Yeah, I kind of agree with this too. I work in retail and we work with DPD. I know most of our drivers well - they deliver to us 5 days a week so we know each other's name and have a quick chat most days.

They're always stressed as anything. The expectations on them are ridiculous and they're expected to work until they've finished every delivery, even if that means a 12+ hour day driving around. They don't get paid particularly well either.

Recently we've had a lot of newbies being trained alongside our older drivers, but there's no extra time built into the day to train them properly. It slows them down (as it does when you're being shadowed all day) but they're still expected to do their job in time. I just don't see how it's possible.

Add into that normal things that delay drivers - traffic, school holidays, bad weather, accidents, vehicle breakdowns, roadworks and you can see how it's just impossible to get everyone's delivery there on time. They have vans full of goods, some which will be on a pre-12pm drop-off, some next day, some that need to go overseas within 48 hours - then there's collections. Some which are pre-12pm collections, others which need to be collected before the business closes for the day - fitting all that into one day isn't easy, especially when your round might include say, 15 pre-12pm drop-offs, all of which are 30 miles apart in different directions!

CantWaitToRetire · 31/10/2018 11:10

Seeing as we're letting off steam about deliveries, I'll pitch in as I've been let down twice within a week and I'm bloody furious!

First one was IKEA. Supposed to deliver an item last Friday. Got the emails with the 4hr time slot so I took the afternoon off and waited in....and it didn't turn up. Called them and got a recorded message about problems with their delivery services and chose not to hang on for the estimated 30 minutes to speak to someone. Had to call them on Saturday to rearrange.

Then on Monday someone was supposed to come and do some work on my car at my home. Again, took a half day as I was told they would be here in the afternoon. It wasn't a short job so at 3pm I called them to ask what time they'd be arriving as it would be getting dark before long. Was told that on the system the job had been booked in (I'd had the confirmation emails) but then booked off again and "you should have had an email". Obviously I hadn't!

On both occasions it was a "oh sorry about that, let's look at rebooking it". That's fine, but doesn't compensate you for using all your bloody holiday up to wait in for people. Grrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

Angelil · 31/10/2018 11:26

@ButchyRestingFace guessing the majority are not in that situation though.

@Anniegetyourgun that did occur to me right after I posted :p But I still wouldn't wait in all day/take a day off for a delivery of something small like clothing from ASOS/Zara: usually they drop it off at your nearest neighbour or post office if you are not in and that is going to be OK for most people - hardly worth the sacrifice of a day's pay.

ButchyRestingFace · 31/10/2018 12:32

@ButchyRestingFace guessing the majority are not in that situation though.

Undoubtedly not, but I was responding to a poster who stated that because she knows someone in a wheelchair who likes to go a-shopping in the high street, that means everyone else can.

There are many people can't/don't want to go to physical shops.
