On holiday, thinking how much I admire the local way of living, would love to move here etc etc the usual. But put off by the square pillows?! There make no ergonomic sense at all do they? Just totally the wrong shape and stupid.

You mean the big ones?! I live in Germany and I LOVE them!!! If we end up moving back to the UK I'll be forced to bring a whole stash!

YABU!!!!!

I recently discovered the square pillow (for sitting up in bed until of a normal one rather than sleeping on) and I am a complete convert. Love them!

YANBU - unless you’re the sort of person who falls asleep in one position and doesn’t move for the entire night!

I am not sure how big is big, I think bigness would certainly improve them. The ones here are quite narrow so if you lie on your back then you are sort of perched on the top and can't turn your head either way without falling off, but if you lie on your side then you can't tuck your hand under the pillow to support your chin, unless you perch your head on the back of the pillow. Hopeless

A square pillow isn't a pillow, its cushion.

I hate them, my PIL love them so much that they buy them in Austria and bring them back with them. Their whole house has them and when they come to stay with us they bring theirs with them! From what I can gather you are supposed to sort of bunch them up to make a more UK type pillow shape that fits nicely round your head - I am not convinced!

Ours are the size of two normal pillows put together side by side. I'm not sure how I lived without them!

I can sleep with a square pillow but don't find them particularly comfortable. They are infinitely better than a French bolster though!

I can see a huge one for sitting in bed and reading, I will concede that. But then you need a sensible rectangle one for sleeping

My Mum had amazing huge square feather filled ones from Germany. I would love some.

They are good to prop you up when reading in bed, but wouldn’t use one when sleeping ..

Grin When I loved to France I bought a bolster thinking it was the thing to do-ended up trapping a nerve in my neck!
I have one big square pillow for TV in bed and reading, and one normal pillow for sleeping... Best of both worlds Smile

YANBU! I’ve lived in Square-Pillow Land (France) for nigh on twenty years, and although I’ve integrated really well, accepting square pillows is an integration too far. Just say no.

A German here, I buy them back in Germany on a regular basis, 80x80 cm and also matching covers obviously.

I hate rectangle ones, they sit in my nape and I cannot sleep properly. We have some for sleepover guests but I don’t touch them, guarding mine like gold dust.

I love many things German but do not understand how to use these. It seems madness to have your pillow under your shoulders but if it isn't your head ends up in an unfilled edge bit of pillowcase. I cunningly refashion it by pushing the feathers up to the top and, wait for it, folding the empty case under the top. Tada, an evenly filled rectangular pillow.

See, even hotel bedmakers have to fold a bit under to keep it plump looking.

I am in Germany too. Before I moved here my German dp gave me one for Christmas. But now I am in Germany they don't seem that amazing. Funnily enough my dp has a rectangular one.

My dh is Dutch and they have them there too.
never understood them, especially as the Dutch are all tall, so the pillow pushes you further down the bed, so your feet hang off the end even more!
Like the idea of them for sitting up in bed though
