to be angry and upset re: virgin wines

bonnieweelass · 29/10/2018 19:54

I've used a lesser known username as I feel so stupid, how could I have missed this?

For context, I have disabilities. I've only recently gotten into digital banking although I use paypal for most purchases. i have a good income and spend too much on clothes etc but have never been overdrawn.

I was looking at my paypal account and I see that for the past THREE years, I've been paying virgin wines £25 a month!

I did not sign up to any subscription. I only bought one case of wine as a present a while back.

I don't know what to do. Can I do anything? I feel so bloody stupid for not noticing and i think this is a wake up call to be more careful with my spending.

I'm in tears. The total over these years is £850!!!

What can I do?

Help me, my husband wil kill me

Who did you buy the present for? Have they been getting a case of wine every month for three years!?

RedFin · 29/10/2018 19:57

OK my first thought is crap that's a pain but my second thought is why would your husband be mad? It's obviously money you could afford seeing as you haven't noticed it til now. You have a good income, you've never been overdrawn. Treat is as an opportunity to be more careful in future but if you're genuinely thar upset about your husband's reaction that's concerning

RedFin · 29/10/2018 19:58

And if you haven't missed the money till now why not start a savings account and send £25 to it each month

JohnCRaven · 29/10/2018 19:58

How?

Yonijust · 29/10/2018 19:59

Where are they delivering to?

Demand a refund if they havnt.

Racecardriver · 29/10/2018 19:59

But what has the £25 been for? Surely they can’t just take your money?

greendale17 · 29/10/2018 19:59

Where is the £850 worth of wine?

Jinglesplodge · 29/10/2018 19:59

I used to use them: it's like a wine "bank" system so the money will be in your account with them somewhere. I reckon for the sake of goodwill and keeping their reputation for customer service etc they'll refund it. Give them a call and see what they can do? Worst case, stop paying in and gradually enjoy £800 of wine over the next few years. That's several decent cases.

shakethatass · 29/10/2018 19:59

Ok relax
You can start by contacting virgin wines to query the charge
Explain that you have disabilities and weren't aware of what you signed up to. As far as you were concerned it was a one off purchase.
Virgin are a really reputable firm, I'm sure they will listen to you.
If you don't get anywhere with them then contact your bank... who issued the card connected to your PayPal account.
Please don't panic, it will be fine x

gigantus · 29/10/2018 19:59

Relax op, you probably enrolled on the winebank scheme where you pay in a set amount and they add 20% "wine interest"- they will refund all the money (minus their contribution) so call them now. Look upon it as a savings scheme?

cardibach · 29/10/2018 20:00

I would imagine you have built up that credit with Virgin and can take it out in wine. That’s how it works with eg Naked wines. That’s Christmas sorted for presents and drinking.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 29/10/2018 20:00

You just need to contact them, that money will be sitting in your account and they will refund it

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 29/10/2018 20:01

Contact them

Should you wish to cancel your membership of the Club, you may do so at any time by calling us on 0343 224 1044. If you wish to notify us in writing you may do so by post or emailing us at just6@virginwines.co.uk

As pp have said the money will be in your 'bank' with them. They may be willing to refund you.

JosellaPlayton · 29/10/2018 20:01

So have your friends been receiving a monthly wine case courtesy of you? Or do you have the £850 in credit? If it’s the latter then get everyone wine for Christmas this year! Obviously cancel your subscription now, but if no one realised for 3 years I don’t see why your husband would now be mad (or even why you’d have to tell him if you don’t want to).

DeborahDowner · 29/10/2018 20:01

Where has the wine been going to is the bigger question?

We had this happen with a gift once and had it happen to us in return from the same person funnily enough.

Normally someone would tell you they’re still receiving a box of wine every quarter from you!?

Celticlassie · 29/10/2018 20:02

I did that once - only for 4 months though, but they refunded my £100 no bother. As a pp said, it's like a wine bank. Give them a phone if you don't have your account details to sign in online. Or buy £800 of wine! 🍷 🍷 🍷

FekkoThePenguin · 29/10/2018 20:04

Christmas presents sorted then? I did the same (thank got it was only 3 months) when I got a brilliant deal on a case of wine and set up the account. I knew that there was the whole 'wine bank' think but completely forgot.

I cancelled the account and used the money to buy some more bottles of a lovely wine that came in a mixed case (that I never would have tried usually).

Chrisinthemorning · 29/10/2018 20:05

Is it all sitting in Virgin Wine bank? You could at least have £850 worth of wine!

bonnieweelass · 29/10/2018 20:06

I'm tee total and have been all my life. Husband rarely drinks. It was a gift for a relative who has just confirmed he only got the one box of wine (the gift) in 2015 and did not sign up for anything else, nor did he get any vouchers. I think my initial purchase was via groupon.

My husband will be mad I did not notice until now

I'm very upset. I am disabled and I am always so careful not to go overdrawn. I don't even have any credit cards. Never did. How could I not spot this?

honeysucklejasmine · 29/10/2018 20:07

Oooh yes, lovely, this is potentially great news - the money is not lost!

MamaJune · 29/10/2018 20:08

Call them ASAP - can you find the original confirmation order email?

billybagpuss · 29/10/2018 20:10

If you’re tee totalled ask them for a refund. For what it’s worth I did the same thing years ago so don’t feel silly very easily done.

Sparklesocks · 29/10/2018 20:10

Call them - most likely scenario is they’ve ‘banked’ it as credit as pp have said.

SoyDora · 29/10/2018 20:10

Phone them, chances are they’ll refund it. No need to stress!
