AIBU?
...to ask you to recommend a spooky film?

I’m planning a Halloweeny evening in, and want a good film to watch. Not horror or gore - more of a psychological thriller, along the lines of Gone Girl, Girl on a Train, or to give an old school example, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Orphan or
In Dreams
Spookiest film I ever saw was when I was about 13/14 called Suspiria - still get chills when I think about it now.

The Ring. (It was on tv last night and I was too scared to watch it again. Once was enough!)
Skeleton Key
The Shining

Ooh I hadn’t heard of Skeleton Key - I just had a look and that looks like the sort of thing. Thank you! Will search up the others too.

Try "Pan's Labyrinth" or "The Devil's Backbone" - it's Spanish, very cool

Halfblood you are giving your age away there or you watched an old film
I was just about to suggest Suspiria! I saw it at the cinema in the 70's.
Absolutely terrifying!!

The Innocents is a good ghost story. Also A Tale of 2 Sisters (Korean film).
HalfBloodPrincess · 29/10/2018 15:48
@rafflesway it was on I think bbc2 in the 90s. My mum woke me up at about 1am as she remembered watching it in the cinema, and was too scared to watch it again by herself. Don’t think I went back to sleep that night!
I’ve just had a google to see if I can order a dvd copy and it looks like they’ve remade it! Doubt it’s as good as the old version but might be worth making my teens watch

Agree Identity is brilliant. Shutter Island is a really good one.
peardropexplodes · 29/10/2018 15:52
Suspiria (the new version isn't out yet, but the original is brilliant!).

The Game - stars Michael Douglas - it's on Netflix. I watched it recently and was pleasantly surprised.
Prisoners - Jake Gylenhaal and Hugh Jackman

The one that properly freaked me out without even a hint of gore was the bbc adaptation of The Turn of the Screw with Jodhi May in the lead role. I think it was remade a couple of years ago with Michelle Dockery from Downton Abbey in it. So scary.

Don`t be afraid of the dark 1973 version. And no I could never watch it again, had nightmares for ages on and off.
