...to ask you to recommend a spooky film?

I’m planning a Halloweeny evening in, and want a good film to watch. Not horror or gore - more of a psychological thriller, along the lines of Gone Girl, Girl on a Train, or to give an old school example, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I liked that BBC program they did in the early 90s where PArkinson got possessed and it had Sarah Green in - can’t remember the name!

What lies beneath, I agree. Or try the Awakening, set in a remote boarding school after ww1, Dominic West and a female paranormal investigator, lots of haunting wintry scenery and a terrifying dolls house.

The village ?

Funnyface1 · 29/10/2018 18:35

Stir of echoes. I like a bit of Kevin Bacon.

Frailty with Matthew McConachy was excellent. Bill Paxton in it too I think.

Suspiria isn’t just spooky, it’s horrific (in a brilliant way).
The Innocents
The Haunting (original) is not remotely gory but still one of the scariest films I’ve seen.

ElizavetaBathory · 29/10/2018 18:45

@lavenderbongo Ghostwatch! Terrifying. Never looked at my cat in the same way again 😂

ScrambledSmegs · 29/10/2018 19:31

The Haunting - the 1963 film, not the 90s abomination. It might be a bit too non-gore and psychological though.

Wouldn't recommend Suspiria, despite it being a classic of the genre and really enjoyable. It's very gory!

The Boy! It's on Netflix. Chilling and a surprise ending

mathanxiety · 29/10/2018 19:39

The Ruling Class starting Peter O'Toole. Very creepy.

ScrambledSmegs · 29/10/2018 19:39

The Wicker Man is a great one too, if you've never seen it. Love a classic. Christopher Lee is brilliant.

Funny Games. Psychological thriller. Utterly terrifying. Stayed with me ever since.

werideatdawn · 29/10/2018 19:47

God yes Funny Games unsettled me for a while after I saw it.

I suddenly recalled this movie with Oliver Reed. Hammer films were my Friday night treat as a teenager.

Berberian Sound Studio. My God is it creepy! Psychological and dark, with the amazing Toby Jones.

Just don't watch it alone!!!
