Which films do you watch for the setting alone?

Posting here for traffic.

The film I've watched over and over again for the setting alone is The Talented Mr Ripley. It's set in late 50s Italy and it's just breathtaking. It's partly to do with nostalgia for a time when life seemed simpler. I use the term nostalgia here loosely as I'm in my 30s. I feel a huge sense of loss for the slow pace of life depicted, the stunning unspoilt scenery and sunshine that oozes out of every frame. It's heart breaking to think that particular era will never return.

The film itself is fantastic, but every time I watch it I hardly focus on the storyline as I'm too busy drinking in the scenery.

The Dead Poet’s Society. I love the film so much, but I mainly feel a need to watch it every autumn for the crisp New England fall landscape and the heavy nostalgia of the school setting.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Beautiful scenery in parts and strangely leaves me feeling like life is good and anything is possible.

In Bruges. It's a fucking fairytale.

Vitalogy · 29/10/2018 07:10

Out of Africa.

ShatnersBalloonFromPennywise · 29/10/2018 07:11

Actually, I watch In Bruges because it's a brilliant film, the setting is a bonus.

SimplyPut · 29/10/2018 07:12

Midnight in Paris

upstart I completely get you about Prometheus.

AnastasiaaBeaverhousen · 29/10/2018 12:28

The Horse Whisperer. Stunning scenery and cinematography.

zeebeedee · 29/10/2018 12:33

Like a PP, The Proposal for the Alaskan scenery

thenewbrunette · 29/10/2018 12:37

It's Complicated - sunny Californian settings and gorgeous Nancy Meyers interiors

redexpat · 29/10/2018 12:40

Anastasia. Ok its a cartoon but Russia just looks beautiful in it.

A580Hojas · 29/10/2018 12:46

Howard's End.

And I cry at the end of Shakespeare In Love when Gwynny, having inspired Will to write Twelfth Night, walks up Holkham beach in Norfolk. Utterly stunning.

Laureline · 29/10/2018 12:56

Sense and Sensibility- 1995 version, the cottage is beautiful.

Laureline · 29/10/2018 12:57

Also, Spirited Away. I love the bath house setting!

redexpat · 29/10/2018 12:59

The opening of the new Italian Job.
The opening of HP 4 (i think) when they are riding up the thames on broomsticks. My heart surges with patriotism!

WhoisyourDaddyandwhatdoeshedo · 29/10/2018 13:14

the Holiday ( i was gutted when i founf out iris's cottage wasnt actually real)

3men and a little lady - i just adore the duplex house!
4weddings and a funeral

FishCanFly · 29/10/2018 13:16

this made me remember Donovan's Reef - early 60's French Polynesia... paradise! (film is full of terribly sexist humour)

bruffin · 29/10/2018 13:21

Paddington, for the wonderful Browns House and Street.

breakfastpizza · 29/10/2018 14:15

Another vote for It's Complicated and The Holiday. I can't not watch them when they are on. Their lifestyles are like a modern fairytale.

I love anything set in a posh hotel. If anyone has any good recs based on that I'd love to hear them!

breakfastpizza · 29/10/2018 14:17

Oh, and this a fab website for drooling over houses in films and TV: hookedonhouses.net/

longwayoff · 29/10/2018 14:18

Cinema Paradiso. The Palme d'or winner, perfect, not the director's cut, poor.

bruffin · 29/10/2018 14:20

Loved the setting of Crazy Rich Asians in Singapore.

Also LaLa Land came out just as i got back from LA and features a lot of places we visited so I have a soft spot for that film.

What Lies Beneath for the gorgeous house and its lakeside setting
