I'm so nervous please tell me how not fuck up tomorrow!

Start my new job tomorrow, and I'm so so nervous.

It doesn't help that I need to be ready to go and start at 8am, so in order to get changed etc I need to leave the house at 6.30 because apparently the 25 minute drive takes at least 55 minutes if I leave at 7!

How can I make sure I don't fuck it all up? I want to make a good impression but at the same time I don't want to look like I know everything because I don't. I've never worked in this area before.

Wanted to say good luck op!
I also start my new job tomorrow!!! Wink

maddiemookins16mum · 28/10/2018 20:09

Make sure you eat something.
Listen, ask questions, be friendly.
AND, this time tomorrow you’ll have done it and the second day is NEVER as bad as the first in a new job.

yousimplyhavetobethesedays · 28/10/2018 20:12

You wouldn't have been given the job if they didn't think you could do it. Have faith and fake it till you make it! Try and get a decent nights sleep and just smile! I started a new job at the beginning of sept and I was a wreck too. I love it now!

NewYoiker · 28/10/2018 20:13

@tessiegirl thank you! Good luck tomorrow to you too!!

@maddiemookins16mum it's stupid things I'm worried about like not having any shoes that fit me? I'll be working in theatres and they have white crocs but I didn't know if I needed to buy my own.. so I haven't I'm 100% sure there will be more than enough shoes but it's just silly niggly things !

NewYoiker · 28/10/2018 20:14

@yousimplyhavetobethesedays thank you! Glad it's not just me! I know that in a week I'll be fine.m, it's just fear of the unknown and moving into a close team.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 28/10/2018 20:15

MAKE NOTES!!!! Telling a new colleague how to do something is fine, telling them again the next day and the next because they haven't written it down is really fucking irritating! Even if it's something which will become second nature, write it down! Also until you know their policy on hot drink rounds offer those immediately next to you a drink or keep quiet.

Good luck - I'm sure you'll be amazing as they wouldn't have given you the job if they didn't think you could do it!

NewYoiker · 28/10/2018 20:16

In that the last time I had a permanent job, I just didn't fit it there. At All. Total clash of personality. 5 of us started at the same time and left 4 months later together. That scares me if I'm honest!

I work in theatres.

Usually shoes are provided but if they aren’t there will be some spares in the changing rooms (don’t forget socks).

Definitely eat food before you go as the PP advised.

If you haven’t worked in theatres before there will be a period of training you before you are expected to work on your own so don’t worry.

It’s a great job. Enjoy.

ilovepuppys · 28/10/2018 20:18

Good luck! Just be yourself! I always find being positive and smiling a bit always makes a positive first impression with colleagues too!

NameChangeCuddleBums · 28/10/2018 20:19

Oh yes. As ZigZag says take notes. In my experience theatre staff love trainees to have a notebook.

Bubblysqueak · 28/10/2018 20:21

Definitely take a note pad and write everything down. It will really help when you get home and can't remember anything as the adrenaline wears off.

PotteryGirl · 28/10/2018 20:23

It’s brilliant that you’re so conscientious...Congratulations and have a great first day👍🏻

Soontobe60 · 28/10/2018 20:25

Presumably you're working in a hospital? In which case, leave plea to of time to find a parking space, which may be a long way from your base! Do you know where on the site you need to go? If not, try to find a map of the hospital online.
I'd take a little notebook that you can jot things down as you get told, so you're not retrying to remember all the details at once. Don't panic, and just try to enjoy yourself.

cheesefield · 28/10/2018 20:26

Good luck

NewYoiker · 28/10/2018 20:32

Thank you! These are all amazing ideas! Packing lots of pens and a notebook now! I'm not taking lunch tomorrow as I don't know what the facilities are and I can't stand sweaty sandwiches! Worst case scenario with the clogs I'll just order some tomorrow night.

You're right I wouldn't have got the job if I couldn't do it!

auroraboringalice · 28/10/2018 20:33

Nothing much will be expected of you on the first day. It really will be okay. Congrats on the new job and try to relax! Everyone who works there had their first day there too and they survived Flowers

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/10/2018 20:36

I would take something to eat even if it’s fruit and some cereal bars.

olympicsrock · 28/10/2018 20:38

You’ll be fine - I work in theatres too. I would take a packed lunch or at least a snack . It can be difficult to find time to get changed a go to a shop and sometimes opening times are inconvenient. I use my phone camera to take notes - really quick to snap rather than scribble...

Bubblysqueak · 28/10/2018 20:43

Good luck, you'll be fab!

DerelictWreck · 28/10/2018 20:43

Remember that everyone you meet tomorrow had a first day there once as well!

froggybiby · 28/10/2018 20:45

Best of luck...I agree with taking notes. Xx you can do It!

8FencingWire · 28/10/2018 20:52

Don’t touch any shoes with something written on them, even if it’s faded. They belong to someone.
No dangly earrings, rings with stones, necklaces, nail varnish or long nails.
Don‘t touch anything blue.
Don’t pick anything from the floor without gloves, ask where it goes.
Don‘t put anything on the floor.
Say ‘show me how and I’ll do it’.
Eat!!! Seriously. Eat. Bring lunch, there’ll be a microwave.
Every time you leave the theatre, tell someone you’re going and where.
Don’t lock your knees.
Bring a water bottle, ask where you can keep it.
Someone will order some shoes for you, you can also buy your own but they have to be reinforced and have the antistatic little button on the sole.
Wear socks, bring a spare pair.

8FencingWire · 28/10/2018 20:52

Pressed too soon by mistake.
Good luck, you’ll be fine!

bringbackthestripes · 28/10/2018 20:53

Good luck! I had an awful sleepless night before my new job (HCP) and it was a whirlwind (sleepless & exhausting) week but pp are right, they wouldn’t have given you the job if you weren’t right for it. Do you have a cool bag & ice pack? If not def pack some fruit/crackers snack bars or crisps or whatever in case you don’t have sufficient time to go to buy something to eat.I hope you have a good first day.

EmmaGhostGhoul · 28/10/2018 20:59

Don't fret about the shoes, there will be a pair for you. Do have breakfast beforehand, and do take lunch - a cereal bar, some fruit, crisps, boxed salad or sandwiches, there will be a fridge for storing stuff in. You'll be on an induction period to begin with so just relax and go with the flow. You'll be fine. Congratulations on getting the job!
