To call 101 about the noise of a stationed train carriage at the end of my street

jadedragon · 27/10/2018 22:48

At the end of my street (100 metres) there is a train station which is 1 station away from a main destination from train station.

For the past 45 minutes a carriage has been stationed there. The lights are on, it has its (loud) engine running and, for the past 45 minutes, has been emitting a high pitched continuous bleating noise.

It is beginning to drive me nuts.

The lettering and numbers on the carriage are GBRF 66742. It's been parked up several times before but has never made this continuous noise before.

I have googled the next station for a telephone number but only the main network number is online. I called that but it closed at 10pm until 7am tomorrow.

Now thinking of calling 101 to try and see if that will get it to shut up!!!!

Why the hell is it still going on at this time of night??? It's going right through me Sad

AIBU to call???

The police are going to do zilch about this. Annoying but not a police matter.

southnownorth · 27/10/2018 22:51

It could be there all night if it's on an engineering job, sorry OP.

southnownorth · 27/10/2018 22:51

Can you say where it is?

2015newstart · 27/10/2018 22:53

It's a freight train. There s not a lot you can do - you could try complaining to Network Rail, who take "lineside neighbour" noise complaints relatively seriously and might impose restrictions, but ultimately if it's stopped there for an unusually long time there might be an on going incident or some engineering work occurring.

You could also try putting your location into real time trains website to see if it's stuck in a queue of trains?

badasscafe1 · 27/10/2018 22:53

Find the twitter feed of the train operator- they are often manned 24/7 and reply to tweets

Catmum26 · 27/10/2018 22:55

the joys of living near a train station or railway line i’m afraid. not sure what you want 101 to do? we have a track running parallel to our house and on the nights where they are doing track repairs we literally can’t sleep all night from the lights and the noise of machinery. it’s just one of those things.

2015newstart · 27/10/2018 22:59

Here you go, you want the 24/7 helpline not the emergency one (no matter how irritating you may be finding it): www.networkrail.co.uk/communities/contact-us/

jadedragon · 27/10/2018 23:01

We have 6+ (electric) trains passing by every hour during the day and don't notice them. Have seen this train carriage before but no issues.

We've never noticed any annoying noise before, just usual train noise that you get used to.

If it was during the day them fine but at this time of night?? It's now started tooting the horn!!

I would hope the police would tell them to STFU!!

southnownorth · 27/10/2018 23:03

It must def be on an engineering job OP, they will toot a lot.

Sorry, the joys of living near a railway. Hope it stops soon.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 27/10/2018 23:17

We live by a railway too. Sometimes there is a godawful noise while a special carriage comes along, lifts up the track and flattens the ground then puts the track down again. It usually happens between 2-4 am but we get a letter to say that it's happening. If you think of it that at all other times the track is much quieter than it would be without the maintenance its more bearable.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 27/10/2018 23:18

(get on Amazon and buy ear defenders for next time!)

VanGoghsDog · 27/10/2018 23:20

Why don't you walk down the road and see if you can find anything out from the staff at the station?

Yes, YABU to call 101.

cheesemongery · 27/10/2018 23:23

Ohh sorry you made me chuckle - it's now started tooting the horn

I'm sure there are people with it doing whatever needs to be done and it's not doing it by itself just to annoy you.

redsummershoes · 27/10/2018 23:24

it's either a freight train or a track maintenance crew.

tweet the rail operator, they will be able to tell you.
but there is nothing they will do... all you can do is close the windows and use ear plugs.

redsummershoes · 27/10/2018 23:29

we have a track mainenance crew freezing their arses off working away nearby as well. no tooting though.

chrisinthesun · 27/10/2018 23:31

@jadedragon

Sorry but you cannot do ANYthing about it and the police will say that too.

We had a burst water main in my village last year, and the whole village was waterless for 3 days! They were at it all through the night - 20 feet from my garden - 3 nights in a row, whirring and drilling and humming noises all night.

If it was someone having really loud parties, still going on at 3am, every weekend then you would be within you rights to moan, but a clearly broken down train? No. You need to suck it up. Shit happens.

jadedragon · 27/10/2018 23:31

@cheesemongery No. They are doing it specifically to annoy ME Grin

I'm waiting for DH to come home from work so he can go down and find out what's happening. I'm in with the kids!

OP posts:
Ozil10 · 27/10/2018 23:32

So I'm guessing it's waiting to go into the main station and for some reason it's delayed by engineering, waiting for a line to pass through on or even a signalling problem.

Has it ever been outside at this time of night before?

On another note, freight trains really freak me out, a bit like container ships. A few people travelling on such a vast vehicle in size. Through everywhere late at night in the darkness on your own. Not knowing who else could be on board in one of the freight carriages or the ship. Eek.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/10/2018 23:32

What exactly do you think the police will do?Confused

southnownorth · 27/10/2018 23:33

If you say where you are OP, I can try and find out some info. They should stop using the horn between 12am and 6am, only if they can!

searose · 27/10/2018 23:39

I used to live near a rail line and this happened occasionally for track maintenance is is loud and noisy but it will stop eventually.
Try ear plugs?

LaCarmencita · 27/10/2018 23:44

I really sympathise with you OP, that sounds dreadful but is it a police issue?

Try cotton wool in the ears or Bio Ears/plugs, if you have any. or play some music really loudly.

cheesemongery · 27/10/2018 23:47

No. They are doing it specifically to annoy ME

haha @jadedragon - it's clearly working Grin

Is it still bleating and tooting? I thought you'd have a bit more sympathy, I mean, it doesn't sound good does it? You'll have to tell your kids Thomas DIED!!!

See? Ramped the odds up Wink

April2020mom · 27/10/2018 23:52

Contact the rail company for information. They should be able to tell you more.

MrsNacho · 27/10/2018 23:53

Put some music on via headphones. Hope it stops soon.
