‘I’d like my chicken rare, please’

AIBU that you don’t have ‘rare’ chicken?!

I cooked a chicken stroganoff for my mate earlier and as I went to brown off the thigh fillets my mate pipes up

‘can you leave mine rare please?’

I said ‘don’t worry I’m not going to overcook them!’

And age says ‘yeah but can you leave mine a bit pink?’

Confused I told her she could get ill and she says she always does chicken like that and never has! And it’s no different to having a rare steak Confused

Anyone else know anybody that has their food ‘weirdly’?

At uni my housemate used to love eating half defrosted bread.

Well yes, I explained it would be too awkward to cook the chicken differently so it all went in the for the same time. She said oh well I’ll just have it how you have yours then!

One of the reasons rare steaks are ok though, is because bacteria couldn’t get into the inside of a steak. So why wouldn’t it be the same with a chicken breast? If you assume cooking the exterior would remove any dangerous bugs, the interior (assuming it’s not been cut or exposed) should be absolutely fine.

'Chicken would be perfectly fine to eat raw or rare, if you could be certain it was free of pathogens like salmonella. But birds are prone to carrying salmonella. The way the birds are raised in confinement in much of the developed world, 60% of supermarket chickens are contaminated with one of several food-borne pathogens. Much too high a risk not to cook it well done!

Beef can be contaminated with e-coli, but the incidence of contamination is much lower than in poultry. Most people don’t eat beef raw, but merely rare — searing the outside kills surface bacteria. It’s not wise to eat ground beef rare because those bacteria may be mixed into the center of a hamburger patty.'

Chef here. It’s fine now to eat pork that is undercooked. Chicken should be cooked up to at least a core temp of 75c

Ah should have clarified - it was most definitely undercooked - it was the texture I noticed before the blood (and I’m talking like juices running pink - not a pink thigh)

But surely the salmonella is inside the carcass, not inside the breast meat? So assuming you seared the outside of a chicken breast and it was not otherwise piecred, it should be ok.

That said, having experienced foid poisoning once in my life, I do not want to try it out.

I was served pink chicken once in a very expensive restaurant in foreign country. I was, and my dh definitely was very sceptical, and didn't enjoy eating it, though they assured us it's perfectly fine. Never had food poisoning though.

Maybe it was erm... very fresh? I should imagine there is a world of difference between a very expensive restaurant and a packet of chicken thighs from Asda (not that I'm saying you shop in Asda OP, I'm sure you shop somewhere very naice, not that there's anything wrong with Asda... I'll get me shovel and keep digging)

You cant eat raw chicken or raw pork because of parasites and salmonella
You can get away with beef or possibly lamb being undercooked or rare

I had a weekend job in a Sainsbury's deli for a while. Sainsbury's sent all their deli staff on a one day food handling course before the staff were allowed to start work. That one day would have taught your friend all she needed to know about safe food preparation and handling; she wouldn't eat chicken 'rare' ever again. Some of the things we learned make me think yeuk even now, and I still wash my hands the way I was taught there.

I have a friend who likes her tea with the tea bag dunked quickly, and always calls it gnats. Smile

I had campylobactor earlier this year, turns out I was in early pregnancy as well.

I can confirm I honestly thought I was going to die.

I don't know if it was from chicken but any meat/poultry I have now is so overcooked it's not even nice. I just don't dare risk it again.

I’ve had fatality chicken in Japan, so seared on the outside and rare in the middle and sashimi chicken

I was sceptical to say the least but the whole restaurant was eating it, it was the thing. It was nice,

Would I do it in the U.K.? , no.

My Mum was infected with campylobactor from what was thought to be an ice cream she ate. Not a machine one, but either from the ice cream itself or the scoop sitting in water (one of those choose your own scoop layouts).

She was laid up for well over a week, extremely sick. I don't know why anybody would gamble with chicken.

People get so worked up.

Undercooked chicken is probably not going to kill or cause food poisoning to most people but it's just not very nice.

Pink chicken liver is fine as is pink pork, veal, lamb, duck, game and rare beef.

I don't like raw or seared tuna because I can only taste fish blood - it's not the freshest though so it's probably for the best that I cook until chewy!

I've had salmonella poisoning (from hummus, of all things), and nothing could induce me to take the risk of repeating the experience.

It made ordinary gastro (which I'd coincidentally had only a couple of weeks before) look like a walk in the park. Easy. Fun, even.

Going back to this from the OP -

I can only eat prawns if they are cold. I love them, shrimps, jumbo, medium BUT they have to be cold. I cannot eat prawns in hot food.

I love prawns, I love curry. I could not eat a prawn curry even if there was money on the table.

Cold baked beans from the tin - NO!! Just no.

Cold rice pudding from the tin - absolutely.

Not my thing but raw chicken is just chicken sashimi or like chicken tartar , it's not that unusual. As long as it has been cooked a bit then salmonella is gone. It can still be pink I just wouldn't risk anything rare including steaks.
