To never use MN again

Noticed a post on here about a post being posted on "the sun" this made me realise just how unsafe this site actually is and I no longer want to use it

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:15

Other than product reviews etc I've never seen anything posted from here before

Heuschrecke · 26/10/2018 16:15

Go to MN's FAQs. Here is the bit about media 'lifting'.

SymphonyofShadows · 26/10/2018 16:17

Are you not aware of the whole Penis Beaker debacle and how it nearly broke the site?

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:19

Nope never heard of penis beaker

OutragedEtc · 26/10/2018 16:24

but I thought MN would be able to step in and prevent such things happening tis all

Why would they want to do that?

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:25

I dunno just out of protection for their users

OP posts:
toomuchtooold · 26/10/2018 16:26

They always go after Mumsnet, though. There's plenty of other public forums where people talk about sensitive stuff: most of the cancer charities have them for example. They'd never screenshot stuff off of (say) the Marie Curie forum even if it was lighthearted because that would rightly make them look like utter scumbags but when it comes to mums it's open season even if it's something sensitive. It plays off the idea that some people seem to have that a bunch of mums getting together and talking is worthy of derision.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 26/10/2018 16:28

Would you expect Waitrose to step in a stop a conversation overheard in the freezer section from being published on a news website?

VisitorsEntrance · 26/10/2018 16:29

But threads being lifted from here happens all the time.

I think that ‘cancel the cheque’ was only about a year ago and that made the news all across the world.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/10/2018 16:29

You do realise it costs money to run the site. How do you think money is generated to pay to run mumsnet? Rags taking stories from mumsnet increasing readership and advertising pull.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 26/10/2018 16:29

I dunno just out of protection for their users

There isn’t any protection needed though. People post things on one website, they are copied onto another website. Both are public.

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:29

I wasn't aware of this but obviously I am now, I'll take note to name change regularly and take caution if posting anything

OP posts:
CantWaitToRetire · 26/10/2018 16:29

Most days you can go on the Daily Fail and find a thread or two that have been lifted from MN. They go for the controversial threads to get a lot of reaction from their own message boards (who usually post to say what a sad bunch MNers are LOL!) Often a time I've read one and thought to myself, if the person this is about is reading this, they'll know it's them Grin.

VisitorsEntrance · 26/10/2018 16:30

And there is the twitter feed which posts threads for people to snigger at, I think there is reddit sub that does the same.

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:32

I must honestly live down a hole either that or I don't follow any pages on social media I've never seen posts from mumsnet being posted anywhere other than the site.. Maybe I don't look around enough

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 26/10/2018 16:36

I’ve only really noticed it from being here

If I didn’t post I wouldn’t pick up on any of this stuff

iVampire · 26/10/2018 16:38

No, you clearly haven’t looked around much.

No matter how many PA posts you make, it was squarely your lack of attention that led you to idiosyncratic and erroneous assumptions.

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:38

I was a long time lurker before joining and still never noticed anything, as of today I'm totally aware n as above I'll be taking caution if I chose to seek advice

OP posts:
BruegelTheElder · 26/10/2018 16:40

I don't think you need to live down a rabbit hole, OP. If you don't read tabloid rags you wouldn't know until you've posted here for a while. I certainly didn't.

But I also didn't care because I never post anything particularly interesting and certainly never share any personal details. Which you should never do on any public forum, whether newspapers look at them or not.

JustABrokenDoll · 26/10/2018 16:40

Daily Mail and The Sun are always lifting stories from MN. The ones I've seen are all threads that are posted on AIBU rather than, for example, the Pregnancy Board.

I remember some tabloid in Canada lifting an MN story a little while ago.

Weddings and anything involving sex tend to be their favourite threads to lift.

gamerchick · 26/10/2018 16:41

I dunno just out of protection for their users

We aren't the customers, we are the product. Just try to keep it in mind if you're going to post a thread. It's not a new thing, it's been going on since advertising started happening on forums.

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:42

Other than here and Facebook I don't follow much else I'm a bit of a bore so wouldn't have known this unless it got flagged up which in the case of the OP it did and I've clicked in and only then was made aware

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 26/10/2018 16:42

It’s funny how it’s just screenshots now

It used to be under the guise of reporting, now the laziness is just blatant

Don’t worry op it takes a while to pick up on it

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:44

The last thing I wanted to do was rile anyone up or anger someone Flowers

OP posts:
EwItsAHooman · 26/10/2018 16:52

You can stay anonymous by doing simple things like name changing often and using a one-off name change for anything sensitive or that you don't want linked to your usual username(s), altering small details like saying son instead of daughter and visa versa, aging you/DH/your DC up or down a few years, etc so that anyone reading couldn't necessarily put two and two together and realise "hang on a sec, that's Jane from the Post Office!"
