To never use MN again

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 15:17

Noticed a post on here about a post being posted on "the sun" this made me realise just how unsafe this site actually is and I no longer want to use it

OP posts:
myrtleWilson · 26/10/2018 15:42

You say not use it again so I imagine you've NC'd for this post - which is all you really need to do if ever you wish to post anything that you don't want to be associated with your main name.

WorraLiberty · 26/10/2018 15:43

Actually if you're leaving MN anyway, I don't understand why you bothered to name change?

naivetyisthenewblack · 26/10/2018 15:44

The Daily Mail does it loads, but so do many others.

Sickened007 I agree it's despicable they do it, but I like MN. (Been here a decade, I must like it!)

Just make sure you name change often and don't post details that are too identifying. Then if something you write does end up in the media, it won't have too big an impact.

Figgygal · 26/10/2018 15:44

It's been happening for ages with the daily fail it's ridiculously lazy "journalism" you're better off being careful than just never look at mn

Godowneasy · 26/10/2018 15:44

Bye then... Grin

SillySallySingsSongs · 26/10/2018 15:44

This has happened for a long time.

WorraLiberty · 26/10/2018 15:46

It's not 'lazy' journalism, it's modern journalism.

Back in the day, they'd take to the streets with clipboards.

There's really no need to do that now with so many people willing to tell all on the internet.

MarshaBradyo · 26/10/2018 15:49

Mn use it for their benefit but I do get that you were ok with mn doing so

I don’t blame you, better not to post stuff you’d hate to see in The Sun

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 26/10/2018 15:51

I don’t get this. You can click on the Sun website and read someone’s thread or on MN and read it. You don’t even have to be logged in. What’s the difference?

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 15:51

I'll keep any future problems to myself... All so welcoming on here huh

OP posts:
BruegelTheElder · 26/10/2018 15:53

Just namechange often and nobody will ever know who you are.

mastertomsmum · 26/10/2018 15:55

Know what you mean. I'd be more minded to move off because loads of la la land views get expressed here. Some posters try to take people down or to task for expressing points of view universally accepted elsewhere

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 26/10/2018 15:55

It’s AIBU! I think you’ve had a very gentle response actually!

As people have said, there are ways to stay as anonymous as poss, but at the end of the day 100,000 a month read what you’re writing without the assistance of the Sun

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/10/2018 15:57

What do you mean by all so welcoming? I don’t think anyone has been unkind to you.

Topseyt · 26/10/2018 15:57

But MN and other internet forums are what keep the tabloid newspapers going. It has always been so.

I don't think there is any such thing as a "safe" internet forum. Anyone who thinks what they post on here, on FB, on Instagram, Twitter or anywhere else is at all private and confidential is rather naïve.

Anonymous they can be, but that doesn't equate to totally private.

I don't post anything so sensitive to me that it would bother me if others found out about it.

BruegelTheElder · 26/10/2018 15:57

Name changing is good because for example, does it really matter if the Sun prints "SICKENED007 CASTIGATED BY IRASCIBLE FORUM MEMBERS"? Nobody knows who sickened007 is anyway.

chrisinthesun · 26/10/2018 15:59

You do know right OP that waaaaaaaaaaaay more people will see it on here than in the skanky SUN? Confused

I know at least a dozen people in real life who use mumsnet. I don't know ONE who reads the Sun.

You are far more likely to be recognised on here!

chrisinthesun · 26/10/2018 16:00

And yeah as a pp said, no-one uses their real name on here anyway!

Notacluewhatthisis · 26/10/2018 16:04

Honestly, don't post anywhere public if you don't want media seeing it.

Case in point. This week Blackpool police posted a CCTV image of a their. He happened to look like David Schwimmer. It went viral. David Schwimmer even posted a reply to it. It's been in some of the papers.

It was a post on a public site. It's fair game.

Mn isn't unsafe. Public websites are not the place to post if you want privacy.

Heuschrecke · 26/10/2018 16:07

"All so welcoming on here huh"

Nobody's saying that 'we' are not welcoming here on MN - we are and most people try to help.

What we are saying is that is that MN is not a private and 'safe' place. It's open to anyone to read - they don't even have to register to read any threads. This is why, as PPs have said, media from anywhere pick up on MN threads and use them.

Sickened007 · 26/10/2018 16:10

Okie dokie I apologise I guess iabu I did as stated know it was a public forum but I thought MN would be able to step in and prevent such things happening tis all

OP posts:
SillySallySingsSongs · 26/10/2018 16:12

I thought MN would be able to step in and prevent such things happening tis all

How can they stop it when it's an open forum that you don't even need to log in to look at?

user1473878824 · 26/10/2018 16:12

“The media’s sickening benefit” Grin

Get a grip, OP.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/10/2018 16:13

Have you been living down a hole? MN threads are in the tabloids or on This Morning on a weekly basis.

It never ceases to amaze me that grown ups don't realise the Internet is public!

MarshaBradyo · 26/10/2018 16:14

It’s worth remembering that mn want as much coverage as anyone and will encourage links to tabloid press

It can easily be missed since it looks cosy / homespun here
