to not know what to get 7 year old boy for Christmas who doesn’t like the ‘typical’ Lego, etc?

My 7 year old only seems to like football! I want to try and get him to ‘play’ more as he’s never been good at picking up and making a train set or Lego or any other typical ‘boys toys’.
I really want to get him to sit down and get engrossed in something. Does anyone have any ideas? Was thinking of maybe a good chemistry set if anyone has maybe bought one for that age and recommend something?
He’s very good about being outside but I worry he doesn’t sit down and concentrate on something inside and would love to try and encourage this.
Thank you.

Snap circuits? I honestly wouldn't be worried though - there are plenty of parents who would love their children to want to be outside all day!

Jeanclaudejackety · 25/10/2018 09:33

Just get him what he's interested in! What about a tour of his favourite club or tickets to a big match with a new shirt to wear?

Janus · 25/10/2018 09:35

He loves being outside but as the weather gets worse when he’s inside he tends to watch football tips etc on the iPad! This can go on a bit and I want to try and get him doing something else when it rains all day! No idea what snap circuits are though so off to google! Thanks.

A football trivia game might be a good way to engage his brain indoors. There's one called Brainbox Football Trivia.

Janus · 25/10/2018 09:36

Thank you Jean, his club is in the middle of a stadium move so nothing to look at but he’s been promised a game when they finally move! A full kit is a must I am guessing 😂!

Thank you Jean, brainbox game has been added to my amazon basket along with a football top trumps!!

Oh yes if you can't wear a full kit with socks at 7 when can you?! My 12yo nephew has just decided he only wears the top now, with skinny jeans and a Hoodie underneath like a grown up, when he goes to matches.

Janus · 25/10/2018 09:41

Patchwork, love the snap circuits! Never even heard of them but reckon he’d love that so I’ve put a starter kit in my basket! Thank you so much.

Oh yes Jean, the socks pulled up high is about his favourite part 😂😂

Subbuteo? Or similar? I wish my 7yo would go outside sometimes and there are definitely downsides to an obsession with Lego!

Misty9 · 25/10/2018 09:45

Oh and mine loves snap circuits although needs help with it usually.

Si1ver · 25/10/2018 09:46

I've bought my 7 year old nephew a raspberry pi and instructions on how to code in scratch. There's also loads of card games that can help with learning scratch. Would something like that work?

Sparklywolf · 25/10/2018 09:50

If he loves being outdoors how about something like binoculars, stuff to explore nature/birds/bugs etc?

ifiwasabutterfly · 25/10/2018 09:52

You can get a jigsaw of a map of the U.K. with all the football stadiums on it.

You can also buy a scratch off map of the U.K. with the stadiums (each one you visit you scratch off)

There is an eye spy football grounds book.

F2 footballers have some books I also saw in boots the other day they have some shower gel type things.

There are loads of books there is a Guinness world record style fact book.

Frank lampard has done a story series plus there is a range of kids books called ultimate football heroes by Tom Oldfield they are basically biographies for kids of players like Messi.

You can buy euipment for football training such as cones and the ladder things. Or pop up goals, some have target sides too.

New balls and goalie gloves are always popular here too.

Janus · 25/10/2018 09:52

Si you are talking a completely forgeign langauge to me! I’ve googled and still none the wiser! I shall look into it but would I have to be knowledgeable to help?!
I’m very happy to sit down with him and do the snap circuits as being goalie can be a bit dull too!!

Hi, you can also get 3D jigsaws of footballs, may be worth a try.

formerbabe · 25/10/2018 09:54

My ds is very similar!

We have the brain box game...it's fab.

I've seen make your own 3d football stadium models...not sure if they're for his age group though

Janus · 25/10/2018 09:56

Thank you sparkly, e got binoculars for his birthday actually and a bird book from a friend and regularly gets them out! He’s had 2 bug kits too as he left the first one out in the garden!
Ifiwas, great idea to get cones etc, he has a goal with an aiming net over it so if I can get the cones and stop the dogs stealing them he’d love that.

ifiwasabutterfly · 25/10/2018 09:56

Does he want to sit down and do something though? You may have guessed my ds loves football - a raspberry pi would sit unloved in its box in this house!

You can also buy 3D models to make of stadiums - if they don't do one for his team you can buy Barcelona's ground for example.

Or tickets for a stadium tour - you can do most of the big grounds or you could do Wembley

Nousernameforme · 25/10/2018 09:57

Lots of these type of questions on the Christmas thread. The posters over there could turn Christmas shopping/bargain hunting into an Olympic sport.

Janus · 25/10/2018 10:08

Spurs are moving stadium but I will look for a Barcelona 3D model as he’d love that too.
Wow, I think I have his Christmas all wrapped up in about half an hour now!!
Huge thanks.
