to drive a 12 mile round trip for Chinese food?

Have the most insane (PMT-fuelled) craving for takeaway. Specifically the absolutely amazing Chinese takeaway near my DP's house, 6 miles away.

WIBU to drive there just to get takeaway?

The only thing putting me off at the moment is the fact that I don't have a microwave to reheat it if it goes cold on the journey home 🤔.

Try living in the backass of Ireland....

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 21/10/2018 15:44

Take a hot water bottle to sit it on.

ChateauneufDuTwat · 21/10/2018 15:45

Moneypenny I grew up rural N.I. My mum used to drive 25+ miles for decent Indian food from the nearest city on a regular basis!

Lack of decent takeaways was one of the many reasons I moved to the UK Grin.

Echoing the fact that 6 miles is nothing - our nearest Chinese is 8 miles away and we are so rural that not even sodding Dominoes deliver

DonttouchthatLarry · 21/10/2018 15:46

We're 6.5 miles away from our nearest Chinese takeaway so no, YANBU!

IAmGrootGrootGroot · 21/10/2018 15:50

Oh my gaa, hot water bottle is a genius idea!

Charolais · 21/10/2018 15:51

We live in the middle of nowhere and bring pizzas etc home to eat from 50 miles away - sometimes 80 miles. 6 miles away we'd still be on our property. That's nothing.

tiggerkid · 21/10/2018 15:52

What's unreasonable? Just do what makes you happy :)

RibbonAurora · 21/10/2018 15:54

I've lost perspective of the concept of distance after living in the USA for the last 15 years. I thought there must be a zero missing when I read 12 mile round trip! Someone here once told me that the main difference between Americans and Brits is in how they measure time and distance i.e. to an American, 100 years is a long time and, to a Brit, 100 miles is a long distance.

We think nothing of doing an 80-100 mile round trip for dinner out at a favorite restaurant here, 12 miles to our favorite Chinese takeaway (it's actually 18 if we take the freeway) would be like walking down the street to the local chippy there.

Take foil and do it, OP.

ColinsVeryJolly · 21/10/2018 15:55

We live a good 180 miles from our nearest takeaway and regularly make the journey on a Saturday night just for chips.

Not really, just fancied joining in Grin

Piffpaffpoff · 21/10/2018 15:56

Cool bag/box with towels to pack any empty space left once your food is in, to keep the heat in.

I’m going to have to get Chinese for tea now Grin!

TeacupDrama · 21/10/2018 16:05

our village only has spar pub and post office and a bad chinese it is 16 miles round trip to everything swimming tennis supermarket chip shop, church etc etc

place chinese in passenger footwell, aim car heating at feet !!!!!!

JessieLemon · 21/10/2018 16:05

I can’t believe you think six miles is worth pondering 😂

I once drove sixty miles each way for the most delicious Thai takeout imaginable. It’s in my home city and I’ve moved away. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. It only took two hours total and it’s SO worth it.

Angie169 · 21/10/2018 16:07

My nearest take away is only 4 miles , but I do not drive and it is not on a bus route , so I have a small foil lined picnic cool bag , a news paper (free papers are great for this ) the food gets put on the cool bag then wrapped in news paper then put in my rucksack , if the weather is really cold i wrap it in a thick jumper too.

it is always still hot when i get it home .
A hot water bottle is a great idea but I am not sure that it would still be that hot when i get to the take away plus i can do without carrying the extra weight

RibbonAurora · 21/10/2018 16:07

Piffpaffpoff we're bbqing steaks later (visiting DS2's choice for his last day's dinner) and I was really looking forward to it but now I'm badly craving Chinese. Normally I'd say let's do steak tomorrow but DS2 leaves tomorrow and the Chinese restaurant will be closed as it's Monday. Can I hold out until Tuesday?

viques · 21/10/2018 16:09

Our best but not very local fish shop is actually a proper restaurant and they don't technically do takeaway but if you beg(I'm not proud) and take your own plates they will sell you a plate of heaven. I take foil, wrap each plate in foil, then a clean tea towel, then a big bath towel. Then I drive like the wind.

If the Chinese food is cold when you get home you can either heat it in the oven or on a plate over a pan of simmering water which is how we did it in the old days......

RibbonAurora there’s a definite difference in perception of distance between nationalities, usually dependent on how big or small their country is.

I’ve noticed workmates think it’s insane that I often go 200 miles each way to a gig on an evening, and come back the same night (well, overnight, I get home about 6am). To me that’s not exactly nothing, but it’s no big deal for something you care about. Whereas they’ll literally say something like this:

‘Oh it’s really weird not living close to my parents anymore’

‘Aww, how far have you moved?’

‘Well I used to live next door but one but now it takes ten minutes to get to theirs’

And they genuinely think that is far 😱

My parent lives about fifty miles away (takes about 50 minutes) and I consider us to be close! I’m British btw so my earlier point about nationalities and distance perception isn’t relevant in this case but it is so weird how some people think six miles is far and others consider being in the same country more than manageable.

category12 · 21/10/2018 16:13

6 miles is nothing. It won't take long and it'll still be hot.

Unless you're driving a steam engine engine or something.

Oysterbabe · 21/10/2018 16:16

I assume you have an oven....?

MammaSchwifty · 21/10/2018 16:23

Just wrap it up in a warm coat/blanket/jumper to keep it warm all the way home!

MongerTruffle · 21/10/2018 16:25

I live in a big city and my nearest supermarket is ten miles away, so six miles is nothing.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/10/2018 16:28

wrap it in insulated bag and cover with a couple of kids coats

beeefcreep · 21/10/2018 16:29

I have driven half an hour to get a pizza before

redlittlesquirrel · 21/10/2018 16:32

I drove two hours each way just for cake once!

florriepeck · 21/10/2018 16:36

My trusty old Lakeland silver-lined cool (or hot) bag comes into its own for this sort of thing.
