To make DD take a bag

DD is 12, when she goes out she carries keys, inhaler, phone and whatever money she has. Often she goes out in a hoodie, so not even decent jacket pockets for this stuff. Phone screens have been smashed more than once, keys lost, money lost.

I've more or less forced her to put her money in a purse. We're supposed to be going out just now to get blinds and a new light shade and duvet cover for her bedroom. She's chosen what she wants online and is looking forward to getting them.

I've asked her to go and get a bag to put her purse and stuff in, as opposed to shoving them in her pocket as usual. She's refusing. I don't care if it's a rucksack, a shoulder bag or a flipping plastic bag, she has plenty of choice. I've told her we're not going to buy this stuff unless she uses a bag. She's refusing. Looks like she's going to stick with the old curtain and bent curtain rail in her room then.

I strongly encourage DD1 to carry a bag. I have learnt the hard way that a lot of pockets in women's clothes just aren't deep/wide/secure enough for the essentials (mostly stuff falling out rather than being pinched). I'm all for a campaign to correct this, but in the meantime I'll take carrying a bag over losing valuables.

What do young lads do? Surely she can put things in a zipped pocket...that's what I do. I never carry a bag as I hate them. I'm more likely to lose them as I just leave them places.

I'm 43 and only use a bag for work. All other times that I go out without a changing bag, I just put things in my pockets. I've not yet lost or broken a phone (even before the changing bag came on the scene) and I've never lost a bank card. I've snapped the chip off one recently when it was in my back jean pocket and I sat down in the car, but I just slotted it back in until my new card came. Plus, I now have an Apple watch so I just use that.

Sorry OP I haven't got a lot of advice as my DC are 6 and 3 and frankly they would quite like bags to carry trains and dinosaurs with us because apparently they get lonely at home (I got told off for calling the trains and dinosaurs wusses)

But seriously Handbags are sexist shackles? GrinGrin annnd some if the feminists on here winder why they aren't taken seriously

I'm feminist and thoroughly enjoy a good handbag...shackle me up

Put it in your bag. It’s not like she’s asking you to carry an atlas stone.

serbska · 19/10/2018 13:38

Get her a nice across the body bag.

This.

I have always liked a small, across the body bag so I can be "hands free" whilst not dropping my stuff all over the place.

One just big enough for keys, phone, purse.

Lucisky · 19/10/2018 13:41

Oh god, I'd need enormous pockets to carry all the stuff in my bag!
Funny how, when we are out, my bag suddenly becomes a depository for oh's stuff. "Can I just put this in there?" Is a common question. However, he is grateful when I can come up with scissors, antibacterial gel or a torch amongst the myriad of useful (or not) crap that I carry.
I did hate handbags as a teenager though, especially when the one my mum made me carry once got stolen. I just forgot I had it and left it on a bench - gone when I remembered and returned.

ToadOfSadness · 19/10/2018 13:43

Hope she doesn't lose the bag. My first thought was a 'bumbag' type of thing, can be worn round the waist or the new way across the body/shoulder.

BruegelTheElder · 19/10/2018 13:47

I don't use a bag, nor does OH. Most people just carry around too much stuff, I guess. When I go out I generally take phone, wallet, and keys. Two pockets is plenty for that.

Chickychoccyegg · 19/10/2018 13:51

my 12 and 14 year old dd's are exactly the same, I bought them both small fashion back packs from new look that they chose themselves, and now they're a bit better, although they would still prefer to stuff everything in pockets , I just refuse to carry stuff for them, so if they have a few things they end up taking their bags
