Public displays of affection

Dear Mumsnet,
I have to get something off my chest. I really, REALLY, despise public displays of affection (PDA). It's quite frankly disgusting seeing mainly teens but also others with their tongues down their throats right in the middle of my local village square! I want to take action but I am unsure if I am being unfair. What should I do?
Many thanks! X

I'm not too sure, I still strongly believe it is disgusting, and all you "young love" campaigners are wrong, I believe.

Just to clarify, we don't moan and grind!Grin
it's a quick kiss to the back of my hand when we are hold hands, or I might snug up to him in a long line up and he will run my shoulders, type of thing
A swap on the bum as we pass each other in the cereal aisle type of thing
We don't look like we are trying to undress each other, or anything!

Quipsandquotes · 18/10/2018 12:52

I think you should call the fire brigade to hose them down.

itsjustmebeingme · 18/10/2018 12:54

I saw two squirrels at it once in the park....must remember to report them to the authorities next time...filthy beasts! 🐿🐿

Soubriquet · 18/10/2018 12:59

Jeez if you came up to me and told me you didn’t like seeing me kissing my dh...I would probably smooch him even more

Make sure there was plenty of tongue action you could see too Hmm

Grow up. Look away. Walk away. You don’t have to watch

sirfredfredgeorge · 18/10/2018 13:02

I believe if you stand very close to them rubbing yourself and making encouraging noises, they'll soon move on.

This thread reminds me:

When I was 17 my bf was snogging me goodbye one night after work. We were in the street, but we were quite discretely tucked away behind a postbox and next to a shop wall in a little alcove. And suddenly this very angry voice from across the street shouted "IF YOU WANT TO MAKE LOVE, GO AWAY AND DO IT SOMEWHERE ELSE". This old man was waving a stick at us in outrage.

I thought it was funny, but my BF was livid. I had to hold onto him to stop him storming over the road.

I'd forgotten that until just now.

It didn't stop us snogging.

Conseulabananahammock · 18/10/2018 13:06

Wow you wouldn't like me and the do after a few sherbets then. Like a couple of love sick teens

Derekmorganwasinmybed · 18/10/2018 13:06

You can’t be for real, what a silly thing to get worked up about

LucyMorningStar · 18/10/2018 13:41

@momologu3 are you actually on a wind-up mission? What's wrong with you? Slow day at work or what? Grin

Shoxfordian · 18/10/2018 13:46

Call 101 to report it Grin

Kidssendingmenuts · 18/10/2018 13:52

Ha ha imagine no kissing signs 😂😂 you'll want everyone 1 metre away from people at all times next!
When you want to kiss you want to kiss! I do it all the time, obviously not with strangers as that would be slightly odd but if I look at my DP and think I fancy the pants off you I'll give him a quick snog and off we toddle! No harm in it x

MNMH · 18/10/2018 14:49

I remember that incel guy Eliot Rodger was so incensed by a couple showing mild PDA that he threw a drink on them.

When it's excessive, it can be awkward, but what can ya do? You can't control them, only how you react to them. Sorry, but putting up with that is part of being in public, along with loud gum chewers and people who don't bathe often.

Ignoring them is your only option, unfortunately. Authorities have more serious things to deal with than your distaste towards overly amorous couples, sorry.

Rosehip10 · 18/10/2018 14:54

Public displays of affection are vulgar

momologu3 · 18/10/2018 15:15

Fair enough, those of you who disagree with me, your points are valid, but I must insist on the need to take (polite) action. But how should I do it, if I were to?

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 18/10/2018 15:20

You dont

You will end up hurt as someone won’t be happy

Branleuse · 18/10/2018 15:20

I dont mind

MamaLovesMango · 18/10/2018 15:24

You could try logging each incident with 101 OP

Zcarter · 18/10/2018 15:33

Where are you from ??

TurtleCove · 18/10/2018 15:42

What do you expect the authorities to do? They have more important things to care about than PDA.
No one likes to see people snogging on the train, but the only thing you can do is look away.

momologu3 · 18/10/2018 15:43

But why should we sit here and do nothing if people are unhappy about it?

OP posts:
MrsGrindah · 18/10/2018 15:44

“Hello Snogging Helpline, how can I help you today?”

RatherBeRiding · 18/10/2018 15:45

Well you could tap them on the shoulder and say (politely) "Please don't do that in public" and then either be prepared to run, or at the very least close your ears for the tirade of abuse that will almost inevitably follow.

Grin
Bombardier25966 · 18/10/2018 15:48

Feel free to tell any couple that breach your PDA standards OP. But expect to be told to go fuck yourself in return Smile

Houseonahill · 18/10/2018 15:51

Start carrying a water pistol and spray them Smile
