AIBU to consider cancelling Novasure Ablation tomorrow because I'm TERRIFIED

WhatsGoingOnEh · 16/10/2018 21:39

I made the mistake of googling Novasure Ablation, and found a thread where women have shared their experiences of having uterine perforations, sepsis, near-death infections, cervixes that close up with scar tissue, but still bleed so they're filling up with blood every month, agonising pain....

I've suffered from heavy periods for the past 2 years, lasting about 10-12 days per month. I've seen two gyneas; one recommended a hysteroscopy but I chickened out. The second one recommended Novasure and I said yes.

Now it's the night before and I'm seriously BRICKING it. It's under general -- is that risky? I have two kids.

My periods are horrible but I'm 47 so I might not have much longer to suffer them...? I have several small fibroids. Is there a way to treat those and reduce the bleeding rather than shoving a microwave up my womb?

My gynae said I could have the procedure now, or wait a few months. But I said now.

I don't know what to do. Part of me worries this might cause more, and worse, issues than it solves?

HELP.

I had one five years ago and its been life changing. I haven't had a period since. You should of had a pre-op assessment though - maybe they will do that tomorrow.

PookieDo · 16/10/2018 23:18

I just flooded on my sofa tonight (cream) so I am feeling most peeved

I may ask for another ablation. I don’t think I need a hysterectomy. I am not sure what to do now

EnlightenedOwl · 16/10/2018 23:28

Some private hospitals dont mrsa test unless there are specific factors. BMI hospitals dont for example for their private patients

Dippysnowoman · 17/10/2018 04:48

Sure, I ended up having a hysterectomy as i had endometriosis which came back following the ablation and was too severe and aggressive for another one.
Dont want to go into too much detail and make you feel worse about today, want to reassure you that youll be fine today x

JamPasty · 17/10/2018 08:31

Hiya. I hope all is going well today. Don't worry about the secretary being scatty - the doctors won't be relying on her for anything medical. They'll make sure they have all the info they need to do their job.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 17/10/2018 09:13

You're all really sweet. I have to be in the hospital at 12.30pm.

I couldn't sleep last night, so overslept past my 7am "last call for food" opportunity! Now on black coffee and water till 11am.

I could have the Mirena put in while I'm there; should I do that? I'm so undecided. It'd stop the periods for good, they say; but I've just lost 2.5 stone and really can't face regaining that.

Any thoughts/experience on Mirena?

Bloomburger · 17/10/2018 09:21

Mireya turned me into a complete loon. Angry to a ridiculous degree, put on weight, didn't want DH near me!

AornisHades · 17/10/2018 09:24

I did exactly what you've done with Googling the procedure and felt equally scared about it. And about the anaesthetic.
I went ahead and have had no problems and no periods. I didn't have fibroids AFAIK so that might be why it was so successful.
Good luck.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 17/10/2018 09:28

Mirena made me bleed continuiusly for 8 months.
Ive had the Novasure ablation. Was fine. General was fine except everytime i have a GA when i wake up I'm horrible tonthe nurses who are trying to wake me up and complain that they wont let me sleep. And then i usually burst into tears. Im such a fun patient to have Blush
My bleeding has reduced by about 25%

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 17/10/2018 09:31

For a fit and well adult a GA is safer than a motorway journey in a car. I bet you aren't this anxious before one of those!

As for Mirena I have no periods on mine at all. 80% of women don't by 1 year of insertion though your fibroids may make you less likely to and the reason that a hysteroscopy is often done first is to see whether the fibroids distort the cavity, as if they do Mirena can be less suitable.
Women in their early 40s end up with a hysterectomy more than women in thir late 40s simply because they have more pre menopausal years to get through.

Good luck OP, you'll be fine.

SlipperyLizard · 17/10/2018 09:37

I had a mirena inserted earlier this year, the only side effect so far has been no periods - if anything I’m finding it easier to control my eating than when I was on Yasmin. It probably depends on how you react to hormonal contraception generally.

PookieDo · 17/10/2018 09:43

Im going to get one put back in - fibroids shoved it out. I liked it until it fell out

Good luck today!

I love that you did this too! :-) Glad yours went well.

OP I just booked a Mirerna fitting 😂

I had a sterilisation at the same time as my ablation so difficult to comment on the recovery as I had a different op

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 17/10/2018 10:18

I had a big op recently after a 5 minute consultation with the surgeon and a 2 minute chat with the anaesthetist 20 minutes before the op! I was convinced they were being too blaśe and were going to kill me! They didn't!. just go with it OP, if you're early on the list ask for some diazepam or something to calm you down while you wait x

WhatsGoingOnEh · 17/10/2018 10:18

Good luck with your Mirena, Pookie!

Since you are 47, why not consider a hysterectomy ? I had horrendous periods , had a hysterectomy, best thing I ever did. Done and dusted, never had to look at the calendar again.

nordstrom · 17/10/2018 13:01

Good luck op! I am going in for my ablation under general tomorrow.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 17/10/2018 17:47

I'm alive!! Bad crampy pain but alive!!!

I had the mirena but I already regret it - do you think I could ask a nurse to take it out before I go?

OP posts:
Queenie8 · 17/10/2018 18:14

Well done 😊. The cramps will ease.

Errrrr I don't think you can have it removed so quickly. I waited 6 weeks to get mine out. It was digging into me every time I sat down, and to OH when we had a 'cuddle'. I had mine fitted years prior to the ablation.

But definitely ask.

Why do you regret it?

PookieDo · 17/10/2018 18:36

I don’t think they will take it out so soon

WhatsGoingOnEh · 17/10/2018 18:58

I wasn't sure about having it because I'm worried I'll get the weight gain/hair loss/psycho moods!/bad side effects. Also, I sort of would prefer to heal naturally, rather than getting symptoms that might just be because of the Mirena (spotting, etc). Oh well. It's in there now!

Maybe I'll be ok. He's left the strings long so if I want it removed at my 6-week check up with my GP, they can take it out then.

Apparently he removed 90% of my lining, and all my fibroids. He said he couldn't use Novasure as the fibroids had distorted my womb into an irregular shape so he used a laser thing.

I'm bleeding - I guess that's normal?

Good luck today, @nordstrom

I hope it all goes well.
