Currently pregnant so haven't used a sunbed since feb but I really can't wait to get back on them despite knowing the dangers, how Can I stop myself I don't like fake tan at all. I used to go on twice a week for 10-12 mins I really don't want to go back to old ways but I'm itching too.

There are safe(r) alternatives that previous posters have mentioned, look into them. If you've not been for 9 months you can carry on not going.

I bet you don't look as good as you think, and that most people wouldn't say you look better with a tan. Just think of the long term wrinkles. Besides, if you have been using sunbeds for a few years then I would imagine you are really out of touch with the amazing products out there now. There are other ways to feel good.
Plus, on the surely they should be illegal side of things, the British government is making a mess of many things, why not also sunbeds, the fact that they are not banned just means the government is inefficient. However, they ARE banned in Australia, France is considering a ban right now, it does happen. I DO think that people who smoke and who drink to excess are probably immature as it goes.

Go right ahead, wrinkled prunes are so attractive, not to mention the possibility of a melanoma. As for the Government banning them, surely as an adult you're quite capable of making the choice having been given the facts? We don't need the Government to tell us the obvious.

I have had full body checks and I have no skin damage at all from using sun beds

I don't believe you sorry.

As a pp said, now you have your child, why would you wilfully increase your risk of cancer? Seems selfish.

You'll regret it when you look like a leathery old handbag.

@SilverySurfer I know the dangers but I don't think a lot of younger people in this day and age do! So many young people regularly using them due to body image etc it's really sad. They should be banned as they are a form of addiction

My mum is translucent pale just like me. She had beautiful skin, virtually wrinkle free, despite being well into her 60's. She started going on sunbeds last year to build a bit of a tan before a holiday. Yes, she's tans a lot, but her skin is so leathery and she aged ten years in that one year. Really not worth it. I'll stick to being translucent thanks.

I was exactly the same when I was pregnant, I really missed the sunbed I also think the extra vitamin D makes you feel happier (that’s what I tell myself anyway 😂) I used st moritz tan with the mitt which is about a fiver in supermarkets x

I meant tans a lot while on holiday. She only used the sunbeds once a week for a few minutes.

I think once you've had your baby you might feel differently. I had them a lot age 21/22. Pregnant with DD at 23 and haven't had one since. I don't want DD to grow up without a mum and I hope the damage hasn't already been done. Deeply regret it

Thank you to those of you with kind replies I really appreciate it. I'm going to go on the hunt for a good fake tan and try to embrace my pale skin, I really hope his gives me the kick I need x

Good luck, OP, and I really mean it. I hope this thread has given you a lot to think about and some strength to make changes.

Changing habits is never easy, but you've posted about this, so you've obviously thought about it. Well done and good things to you. Grin

I know I have a higher risk but that is my decision to make

It is. Although it sounds as though you also have children to consider? I think it seems incredibly frivolous to more than double their chance of losing their mother at a young age, just because you think you look nicer a bit browner. Honestly, there are loads of healthy ways to make yourself feel good. Here are a few ideas:

Swimming, walking, hot tub/sauna/steam, listening to music, reading, driving to a place with nice views, going for a bike ride, making something delicious to eat...

But if you’re not bothered, crack on. 😬

@mrswishywashy1 the spectrum of commercial sunbeds is not as effective at clearing psoriasis as medical aunbeds. You should be getting that in prescription. Not self medicating.

@waterlego I don't think you need to judge people. You can't go around saying your going to die if you carry on I bet you don't walk around the streets shouting at people who smoke. Not everyone who uses them will get cancer obviously some people do

Shelly, which words or phrases did I use which suggested I wasn’t judging someone?

They are actually apparently safe to use in pregnancy don't hold me to it but with my first my midwife said I was ok to do so, the only reason why they don't really like it, is your skin changes with the hormones and you can burn very quickly. However I wouldn't do it they haven't been tested as such and that was one midwifes opinion on them.

I don’t shout at smokers. I do secretly judge them. But I smoked for 25 years and judged myself for it for most of that time too. 😂

Yeah and I'm saying you don't need to judge people obviously. I hope your the most healthy Individual. Probably not just a judge mental idiot

@anitagreen yeah I deffinatley wouldn't dream to use them during pregnancy I don't think there is any scientific evidence but I read a magazine once and a baby was born blind and the women used sunbeds everyday during pregnancy and there's a risk of miscarriage when your body over heats

You say you cannot help being addicted. That is what makes you sound immature. Of course, you can stop, you just don't want to. For some reason, you think an artificial tan looks good. In my opinion, it doesn't. Malignant melanoma is a very real killer. A sunbed tan looks false and tacky and will age you faster than anything bar smoking (also a killer, also legal). An addiction is not what you are describing. If you were surrounded by a culture who considered pale skin to be beautiful, and tanned skin ugly you would soon stop

Wow Shelly. Did you miss the bit where I tried to tell give you some support and advice? And where I told you hoe awful it was to watch my dad die of melanoma?

Oh dear. Have let an internet stranger hurt my feelings and that’s not good for me so I’ll be off. Wishing you well.

@waterlego I just don't think it's nice to say to someone about there kids if they die, unfortunately a lot of people suffer from cancer for various reasons and using doesn't always sunbeds mean your going to get cancer. I'm very sorry about your dad it's awful and I know now I won't be risking it but I still won't be judging other people if they choose too.
