Currently pregnant so haven't used a sunbed since feb but I really can't wait to get back on them despite knowing the dangers, how Can I stop myself I don't like fake tan at all. I used to go on twice a week for 10-12 mins I really don't want to go back to old ways but I'm itching too.

Well I don't use them because of the dangers associated and also because they really age you. Some girls I went to school with look 10 years older than me because they use them.

But then again I eat red meat which also causes cancer so bit hypocritical of me really.

Poodles1980 · 16/10/2018 13:45

One of the girls I work with uses them and she looks like a roast chicken permanently. Her skin is that weird orangey bronzed colour and really wrinkly

overagain · 16/10/2018 13:45

I used to use them occasionally but not anymore. It's just not worth the risk imo. I'm ok with being pasty.

Judygarlandspills · 16/10/2018 13:46

You’re pregnant and all you can think about is getting a tan?

MarthasGinYard · 16/10/2018 13:47

I used them in the late 80's wish I hadn't.

Cannot understand ANYONE using them these days. You still see the odd new tanning salon popping up normally in more deprived areas

Makes me shudder

shelly0 · 16/10/2018 13:48

@Judygarlandspills when did I say it's all I'm thinking about ? Yeah I'm excited to not be pregnant anymore it's not the most enjoyable experience !

Why is being tanned so important that you'd risk your health (and potentially your life) for it? I find it baffling that people still use them tbh.

shelly0 · 16/10/2018 13:49

@Knittink I know it's awful but it genuinely is addictive just like smoking I don't know what is it about being tanned that makes me feel so much better

My sister is exactly 12 months older than me but uses them every week. When we go out people assume she's my Mother. That alone is enough to put me off them for life.

radioband · 16/10/2018 13:52

I understand what you mean, I stopped when I became pregnant. I did only go on around once a month but when I was younger it was once a week. I'm tempted to go on again now I've had the baby as it makes me feel better about myself but the risks play on my mind.

Singerleon · 16/10/2018 13:53

I used to use them years ago with one of my friends. She had to have a cancerous mole removed from her leg a couple of years ago. Wouldn’t touch them ever again. Think they should be banned.

LethalWhite · 16/10/2018 13:54

I know someone who died in her early 30s of malignant melanoma after using sunbeds.

Also the very tanned look is chavvy as fuck, and it ages you badly.

Why not spend the money on something else?

AGHHHH · 16/10/2018 13:55

Yabvu.

shelly0 · 16/10/2018 13:55

That's what I mean if they are that bad then surley they should be illegal the government don't exactly get any money from them like they do cigarettes. Wouldn't it benefit everyone to get rid ?

My parents had a sunbed in the 80s, I was never off it and always had a tan and felt great. I got married in 1988 and so moved out and hence never used one again. So glad I stopped when I did as in 2009 I had a BCC removed from my face, thankfully, not the most serious skin cancer, but was told there is a direct link to sunbeds.
Please stop using them, apart from the health risk, I’d probably look 100 now if I’d carried on!!

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/10/2018 14:10

I also know someone who died from malignant melanoma in her 30s, likely to be caused by sunbed use in her late teens/early 20s, leaving her DCs without a mother.

Think about the impact on your DC as well as yourself. Just because something exists, no reason at all to actually use them.

Cinnabunbun · 16/10/2018 14:11

I wish I had never used them and blame them for my premature ageing. Looking back on my tan phase photos I wonder how I ever thought it looked good anyway.

Maybe look forward to swapping it for a different kind of pamper experience like sauna or steam room sessions?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/10/2018 14:11

I get my eyebrows waxed in a salon that has sunbeds. It's next to the university and there are always queues of students waiting to use it. It really surprises me that young people are so keen to use them given the risks are well publicised.

RTFT · 16/10/2018 14:13

You sound quite immature, you know the risks yet you're still willing to risk your baby growing up without a mum for the sake of a tan?

Crack on

MemoryOfSleep · 16/10/2018 14:14

The government don't ban everything that is bad for us, they aren't our nanny. As adults we have to weigh up the risks and make our own choices. Personally, I wouldn't go near them. Pregnancy is making you break the addiction, I'd stay off them from now on if I were you.

shelly0 · 16/10/2018 14:15

@RTFT how does it make me immature, I clearly know the dangers yes but i can't help but be addicted to something. Are people who smoke and drink immature ? I know this is an issue and I say to myself I won't use them and have even had nightmares but then I forgot about all that and go back to using them. It's clearly a problem I'm struggling with

You want to die young from melanoma? Go ahead. Didn't think there was anyone dumb enough to use sunbeds anymore.

LethalWhite · 16/10/2018 14:17

I wouldn’t say you can be addicted to sun beds.

You are just making irresponsible short sighted decisions based on worries about your appearance.

HTH

POPholditdown · 16/10/2018 14:22

I know you said you don’t like fake tan, but have you tried some better brands?

Utan is meant to be really good. Or why not a spray tan instead, so you don’t have to worry about doing your back properly.

I used to use them too, but only for a short while. Tbh, I only stopped because the one closest to me had shit beds that took me ages to see a difference and the decent salons were a ball ache to get to.

Can you find something else that ‘feels’ similar that you can go to instead? Half hour in a sauna for example.

HungryForSnacks · 16/10/2018 14:22

It's illegal to operate a commercial solarium/sunbed in Australia. Hopefully the UK government catches up to this soon.

Hope that's enough of an incentive to get you to stop going. That or skin cancer
