To ask where to stay in New York

Donna1001 · 15/10/2018 17:32

DH, DD11 & DD8, & I are planning on going to New York next July for hubbys 50th.

Have you been? Would you recommend the hotel?

Wanting to stay close to Central Park, & budget £100-£150 a night. Ideally separate sleeping area for the kids, but that’s no a deal breaker for the right location.

Thanks in advance 😊

I stayed at the Wellington.

Same hotel borat stayed in....shower the exterior in the movie anyway.

Was absolutely perfect for Central Park, Times Sq and 5th Avenue

catpooproblems · 15/10/2018 17:34

Btw despite borat connection it was lovely!

We stayed at the Kimberly in mid town, close to Rockefeller. It was one of the few I found with a separate lounge that had a sofa bed as we went with two teenagers and needed a bit of extra room. It’s (in my opinion) quite 80’s but very popular. Comes with a kitchenette that is useful.

Try BA Holidays - they have some amazing flight + hotel deals. For example...

I stayed in Novotel New York, quite near Central Park and decent sized rooms. Would go for 2 rooms and ask for inter connecting if possible.

EnglishRose13 · 15/10/2018 18:16

We stayed in the Excelsior Hotel which is opposite the Museum of Natural History.

bluetit101 · 15/10/2018 18:23

We stayed at the Wolcott on W. 31st street between Broadway and 5th Avenue. Quite basic but we only slept there. Perfect location, Empire State Building was outside our window and one block away and when you walked to the end of our street we were a stones throw from the Flat Iron building, and right near Macy's.

We went in 2004 and loved it. Would love to go back Smile

Thanks all.
We want to fly with Virgin, that bits easy. When you start looking at hotels, there’s just so much choice & I’ve got wrong before!

We must knuckle down now & get it booked!

Just home from the Novotel Times Square....amazing!

There's a great group on FB called "NYC the place to be" where there are lots of recommendations and information. Made planning our trip much easier.

MummaGiles · 15/10/2018 18:33

Would you think about Airbnb if extra space is a consideration?

MrTrebus · 15/10/2018 18:33

Don't stay at the skyline hotel we stayed there it was a bit of a dump but we didn't care because we just slept there and we were young.

juneau · 15/10/2018 18:34

Airbnb doesn't operate in NYC (or if it does - it's illegal I believe!).

elspethmcgillicuddy · 15/10/2018 18:39

Air bnb is in New York. We stayed in a nice one in the Lower East Side in August.

Littlechickenleg · 15/10/2018 18:42

Another vote for the Wellington. Brilliant for everything and right on the subway. Also diagonally opposite is a fab place for breakfast and take out. Love it. Would definitely go back.

Chemicalrainbow · 15/10/2018 18:53

Goggle Bubba and Bean. We stayed there a few years ago and loved the place.

JosellaPlayton · 15/10/2018 18:53

The Novotel is amazing for the price. I’ve stayed there, it was on the program at my old work and all of my colleagues loved it and they were extremely fussy individuals. In my years of running the department travel program, it’s genuinely the only NY hotel I didn’t receive a complaint about (and some of the complaints relate to $400+ a night 5* places).

And as it’s come up, most Air BnBs advertised are illegal. As a guide, if they building is in New York, has more than 3 units and the owner isn’t present then it’s definitely illegal. Love Air BnB normally but wouldn’t touch it in NY.

Bunnybigears · 15/10/2018 18:58

Novotel Times Square
My kids were 11 and 8 amd loved it

tentative3 · 15/10/2018 19:02

Hotel Beacon, fab location on UWS and huge room with kitchenette.

MagpieWife · 15/10/2018 19:43

I'm in NYC a lot for work and I love staying in Soho - close to Brooklyn, the best restaurant options, great transport links and a very cool feel - but if you're set on Central Park the Wellington is a good bet. My dream hotel is the Beekman in FiDi but it is waaaay over my budget.

Word of warning - most AirBnBs in Manhattan are technically illegal. They do exist and it probably wouldn't affect you - but there's a small chance that someone would report the let while you were in it. I don't think you could be prosecuted, but you absolutely could end up out on the streets looking for somewhere to stay at extremely short notice! Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

cadburyegg · 15/10/2018 19:45

Another vote for the Wellington!

MrTrebus · 15/10/2018 20:17

Why is airbnb illegal in NYC?

billybullshitterz1 · 15/10/2018 20:43

We stayed at the Wellington. Had a queen suite. Agree with PP Perfect location.

JosellaPlayton · 15/10/2018 20:43

Well the argument it that it helps residents by keeping rentals for people that actually live in the city and stops prices going up, because short term rentals are more profitable, and it keeps people safe because their building access codes aren’t constantly being given out to strangers. Or there’s a school of thought that NY is bowing to pressure from the hotel lobby who has a vested interest in stopping AirBnb. You can make your own mind up MrTrebus!

LongHotSummer24715 · 15/10/2018 22:38

The doubletree Hilton on time square have suites & really big rooms for NYC. Iv stayed there a few times, great location just above McDonald's on time sq & the big rooms are great. Seperate living area with pull out bed & fridge etc
