To ask where to stay in New York

Donna1001 · 15/10/2018 17:32

DH, DD11 & DD8, & I are planning on going to New York next July for hubbys 50th.

Have you been? Would you recommend the hotel?

Wanting to stay close to Central Park, & budget £100-£150 a night. Ideally separate sleeping area for the kids, but that’s no a deal breaker for the right location.

Thanks in advance 😊

I recommend The Box House Hotel in Greenpoint . One subway stop from Grand Central .

We just recently stayed at the Gallivant Times Square. If we go back, we would book it again (unless there was somewhere cheaper about the same location). We were two blocks from Times Square and Broadway.

Wouldn't be able to tell you if it was in budget though for you. I have a US credit card so booked with that in US dollars since paid at the hotel.

Poloshot · 15/10/2018 23:57

@MrTrebus because you're not allowed to sublet a property for less than 30 days from memory in rental apartments

bellsbuss · 16/10/2018 00:20

W Times Square is lovely

Gushpanka · 16/10/2018 00:40

Not sure your budget will stretch to nice family hotel room in central Manhattan

Airbnb is not allowed in NYC for rentals of an entire unit for under 30 days. It's to stop unfair competition with hotels.

Koalablue · 16/10/2018 01:03

We also stayed at the Galivant. Our room fitted all five of us. Two double beds and a bunk bed. It was budget accommodation but well worth the money. Oh and the restaurant next door is lovely.

DawnFrenchKiss · 16/10/2018 01:11

I'd definitely stay lower East/Chinatown and get the subway in to central park. There's a lot of very expensive houses by the park and not much else but I much preferred the buzz of lower Manhattan.

VodkaLimeSoda27 · 16/10/2018 01:32

I live here and that budget won't go terribly far near Central Park. Consider other areas of Manhattan like the Lower East Side where you will get a cheaper deal, or Brooklyn. It's cheap and easy to use the subway.

Donna1001 · 16/10/2018 16:06

I’ve no idea why I put that budget! I knew it would cost more.

These all look great, now to whittle them down.

Thanks all.

For that budget I’d recommend connected private rooms at the YHA hostel in Central Manhattan. It’s a lovely place, central, and full of professionals and families.

MulderitsmeX · 16/10/2018 16:17

I love the meatpacking district. Gansvoort or standard are nice.

Wouldn't stay in Times square- it's like leicester square!

Agree brooklyn good for cheaper places

Eifla · 16/10/2018 16:17

The Roosevelt. Great hotel and great location. Feels very fancy but isn’t costly.

shirleyschmidt · 16/10/2018 16:20

We stayed at the Amsterdam Court which was quite basic but perfectly clean and comfortable, a brilliant location just around the corner from Times Square, walkable to a lot of major sights.

Perihelion · 16/10/2018 16:26

I second the Kimberly for families. Had a suite with a bedroom with two double beds and a lounge kitchen with a large sofa bed ( and a full size fridge freezer and dish washer Hmm ) and a balcony. Was about £300 a night a couple of years ago.

MagpieWife · 18/10/2018 17:41

Please don't stay in Times Square. It's the worst. Midtown is horrible.

frayedbuspass · 18/10/2018 18:03

Have a look at the Affinia hotels, several in different parts of Manhattan and some are set up as flats, with small kitchens etc

H2O2hair · 18/10/2018 18:32

We stayed at the Edison on times Sq. Great location. Cheap and cheerful not posh.
