Sofas take way too long to arrive!

I ordered a sofa and an armchair from Next on August 2nd. They said it would be around 8 weeks (which I think is way too long anyway, but that's besides the point). Now they're saying they won't be ready until November 2nd. That's 13 weeks!

AIBU to think these shops take the piss with sofas? So sick of the broken one we currently have, it's scratchy and massively uncomfortable (and broken, as stated).

I so agree we moved in with no sofa had ordered it 4 weeks previously as we thought it was best not to try take our broken sofa with us. The new one ended up delayed and we ended up sat on garden furniture for 4 weeks.

DammitOedipus · 14/10/2018 22:09

It's awful, isn't it? We took the broken one when we moved, as we only had two weeks between when we viewed the house to when we moved in (and we forgot to measure upon viewing). The living room looks like a tip because of the broken furniture and it's taking so long!

Why do they take so long though?

FarrahMoan · 14/10/2018 22:16

We ordered new sofas a week before moving and were told 8 weeks. To be fair to John Lewis it was 8 weeks almost to the day but bloody hell that felt like a long time

blackvelvetband · 14/10/2018 22:24

DFS told me it was to do with filling the shipping containers. They would wait for 1 to be filled with a certain type / range of sofa before shipping it. Not sure how true this was!

newmumwithquestions · 14/10/2018 22:27

I remember the first flat DH and I bought - had no sofa so we bought one straight after moving in not realising you had to wait months for it. Beanbags are not a replacement!

We found a nearby pub

AwaAnBileYeHeid · 14/10/2018 22:27

Yep, it's the shipping containers from whatever far flung country of manufacture.
When mine developed a fault within a few weeks after waiting for 16 weeks for it to be delivered in the first place, I was told they had ordered a replacement. For 11 weeks time! It's crazy. Perhaps we need to look into encouraging more UK manufacturing when it comes to stuff like that.

newmumwithquestions · 14/10/2018 22:28

oops ... we found a nearby pub with a sofa and would go, spin a drink out and just.. sit.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 14/10/2018 22:31

That's because your sofa is being made in China, shipped half way round the world, has to go through customs and then work its way from a shipping container to a warehouse and then to the local store. Then from the local stores to you.

DH runs a bespoke sofa and chair business. Each sofa/chair is handmade to order, and all the individual components brought in... frame, springs, cushions, legs etc. And don't get me started on fabric wholesalers. I spend my life chasing back orders.

So yes it can take a while Grin

bluegreygreen · 14/10/2018 22:49

Ours took 1 week - delivered on the day promised

(John Lewis standard range)

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/10/2018 22:51

Buy one that’s manufactured in the UK. Sorted.

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2018 22:55

Ours were manufactured in the country where we live, but they still took 6 weeks because they were made to order. Very nice they are too.

Montybabe · 14/10/2018 23:01

Try sofa.com or sofa workshop. They’ve both delivered to me in 4 weeks although they estimate 6 weeks.

PriscillaSM · 15/10/2018 15:44

Harvey's are normally good with offering loan furniture while you wait for yours to show up, a bit gutting when the sofa you've ordered turns out to be less comfy than the lovely loan furniture you've had for 14 weeks!

eggsandwich · 15/10/2018 15:52

I’ve just received my DFS sofa and that took nearly 8 weeks so think its the norm really but 13 weeks is way too long, whats the reason for the delay ?

southnownorth · 15/10/2018 15:55

That's why I got my sofa from Ikea, hired a van and shoved it in.

CoperCabana · 15/10/2018 15:59

There is a place called Sofa King (and I am sure other similar places around the country) where you can usually get same day or next day delivery. I hope you get on ok with your Next ones. We waited weeks for them to arrive but they only took a couple of weeks to go saggy and scruffy after being delivered. Hmm

SmilingButClueless · 15/10/2018 16:06

My last one took 4 months to arrive Shock

It was worth the wait though - still almost as good as new more than 12 years on and I’m so glad I waited to get the one I really wanted rather than compromise on one I didn’t like as much with quicker delivery.

mara89 · 15/10/2018 16:14

A lot are made to order, that's why you usually have the option of fabrics and finishes. They're bloody big and difficult to store, so no company really carries that many pre-made. Buying sell offs in store is best if you want it fast.

Jarstastic · 15/10/2018 16:27

I feel your pain.

John Lewis said mine is made in the UK. They originally said 6-8 weeks, but called to say a bit longer as the supplier had informed them delay on the fabric getting to them. Seems so long since I paid for it.

QueenCity · 15/10/2018 17:40

@PurpleFlower1983 The last sofa we bought was made in the UK but still took 12 weeks to arrive.

SoupDragon · 15/10/2018 17:42

That's why I got my sofa from Ikea, hired a van and shoved it in.

Me too, although I paid the hefty delivery charge instead.

FutureDays · 15/10/2018 17:52

Depends where they are coming from, I worked somewhere selling sofas and if it was an item that came in from China it could be delivered quite quickly if we had stock in the warehouse, there was always stock being delivered so it was never a long wait.
It was the UK/italian special orders that could take up to 8 weeks as they were being made to ordee in the colours the customer had requested.

southnownorth · 15/10/2018 17:58

Me too, although I paid the hefty delivery charge instead.

You are also treated to the joy of constructing it.

redsummershoes · 15/10/2018 18:01

that's why we go to ikea.
