My 10 month old wont eat or drink

My 10 month old has always been a big eater. I'm talking 45-54oz a day. She's very busy and never stops moving. She is behind on weaning and may have a spoonful of porridge and a little carrot a day most so it's not really anything to do with being full from solids.

Today she's had 18oz. The last time she had any fluids or food at all was at 1:30. Any time something is offered she jolts her head away and if you put the bottle in her mouth she starts choking on the milk/water. Food is just a no go too. She's was inconsolable for about and hour at around 5pm, and keeps bursting into tears for significant amounts of time. She doesn't have a temperature, or a snotty nose or cough.

Aibu being really worried, do I just put her to bed and see what happens? Im really worried putting her down without anything to eat or drink since lunch time.

Is she teething?
Are her nappies wet?

Fresh01 · 14/10/2018 20:20

Sore throat? Would she let you look and see if it is red and inflamed? With my kids it tends to be the only thing that puts them off both food and liquids.

userabcname · 14/10/2018 20:20

Teething? DS has a hearty appetite but won't eat if his gums hurt. I give a dose of calpol then offer food / water about half an hour later and he usually wolfs it down then.

MaryShelley1818 · 14/10/2018 20:23

Another guess at sore throat? Took my DS to Urgent Care yesterday morning and he had tonsillitis. Almost back to normal after just the first 24hrs on antibiotics x

Aquamarine1029 · 14/10/2018 20:24

Her body is telling her to not eat, so I would listen. Not eating normally for a day, even a few days, will do no harm. She could be teething, have an earache, tummy bug, whatever.

HollowTalk · 14/10/2018 20:24

My daughter was like that and it was tonsillitis. Try something really cold like ice cream, if you have it.

poptartprincess · 14/10/2018 20:25

I'm not sure. She's had three teeth come through but never been like this before so wouldn't know. I did use some teething gel but it didn't make aany difference. She wouldn't take the calpol, just spat it all back out. I checked the back and roof of her mouth and it seems alright.

I'll give the ice cream a go in the morning if she's still not eating as none in right now.

My first thought was tonsillitis too

DonkeyPlease · 14/10/2018 20:29

Have her ears checked as well as her throat.

My DS did this at 13 months and it was an ear infection that made swallowing painful

Bumbumtaloo · 14/10/2018 20:30

Is she still having wet nappies? I’d be more concerned that’s she’s not having any fluids as opposed to not having food.

NannyR · 14/10/2018 20:32

Hand foot and mouth is doing the rounds at the moment. The baby I look after had it the other week - she started by just not wanting to eat or drink anything but not particularly ill in herself, then she suddenly got a raging temperature and was very clingy and unwell. The next morning she had the tell tale blisters.

poptartprincess · 14/10/2018 20:34

Oh gosh @NannyR I hope they're okay!! I'll definitely keep an eye out.

She's had one wet nappy and one dirty since. So not as many as usual. Last one was around 5

My 9mo DS was like this, turns out he had viral tonsillitis. Get her to docs to be checked out, they can’t give anything for viral, but at least you’ll know why she’s not wanting to eat and drink.

Myusername101z · 14/10/2018 20:47

You need to keep an eye on her nappies my baby this week was throwing up all her milk and water didn’t have a wet nappy for 6 hours called 111 and I had to take her to a&e where I was told to syringe water into her every hour to avoid dyhydration

HavelockVetinari · 14/10/2018 20:49

Sounds like she's poorly, but that aside - once she's better you need to get her to drink less milk and eat more solids. If she only drinks milk she's at risk anaemia and other dietary deficiencies. We went through this with DS, he was a real boob fiend, but we slowly and painfully managed to get him onto more solids. Persevere!

DSis is a paediatrician and says that the whole "food before one is just for fun" thing is a myth. Babies really need solids from 6 months.

poptartprincess · 14/10/2018 21:36

She just won't stop screaming

TheWeatherGirl1 · 14/10/2018 21:42

Call 111

Fresh01 · 14/10/2018 21:44

Can you try again to get her to take Calpol or Nurofen? Sounds like something is sore, throat and ears are usual suspects. Do you have an out of hours GP nearby to get her ears and throat checked? Poor both of you. Nothing worse than them being unwell at bedtime.

iliketomoveitmoveitMOVEIT · 14/10/2018 22:07

I would also be calling 111 for a baby under 1, they can get dehydrated so quickly. Hope it’s just a little cold or something and she’s back to normal very soon Flowers

Happygummibear · 14/10/2018 22:24

Has she got any spots like heat rash on the body very feint?

Mine got hand foot and mouth last week and couldn't eat but dribbled loads. Even Calpol and neurofen came back out unless I could get the syringe right in and used a dummy to close her mouth and force her to swallow.

poptartprincess · 14/10/2018 22:54

No rash at the moment. I'll keep an eye on her. I think something in her mouth definitely hurts though. I just spent about an hour syringe (5ml - fgs) feeding her. I got about an ounce and a half in and she finally stop fighting and started sucking the syringe. So she then took the bottle and some calpol and is FINALLY in bed.

Hand foot and mouth is very painful for them and was the only disease ever that took my son's appetite away! He had it twice in one winter when he was 2, my daughter had it once at 9 months old.

If it's that it's pretty harmless, just painful for them.

I would 111 too just to be sure.

Happygummibear · 15/10/2018 06:42

If you haven't done 111 then perhaps get to the doc today just to be sure.

Mine didn't have a temp but started with a rash and dribble (thought it was teething) till the rash came out all over then got alot worse around the mouth.

As she is only 10 months I would go to the docs to make sure it's something straight forward that a bit of tic will cure.

RiddleyW · 15/10/2018 06:46

My son was like this with hand foot and mouth. Poor wee thing wouldnt eat anything although he breastfed a bit which helped.
