To ask how to respond to Benny Hill

Sketch?

Someone has sent me one on WhatsApp, I hate Benny Hill and that type of humour. The bloke sending it does or should know I wouldn't find it funny.

It's misogynistic, sexist and ridiculous!

Can I ask you for a great "put down line".

I've a feeling it was sent with a "this will wind reallyreally up" type way!

Whatever Benny Hill was he wasn't a comedy genius.

Depends on who is watching though doesn't it. Lots of people I don't find funny other people find hilarious. Horses for courses.

pigsDOfly · 14/10/2018 17:37

Never actually watch love island but have heard about it.

And yes, there was a lot of awful tv around in the past but with programmes such as love island and naked attraction currently on our televisions I don't think we've got an awful lot to be sanctimonious about tbh.

reallyreallynow · 14/10/2018 17:38

@Bluelady I do have more than half a brain and it's my own so don't need to listen and laugh and misogynistic crap!

It's not puerile at all.

@ChilliHobnobs hounding posters on either threads is against MN guidelines I've reported you! Just so you know. That ok with you @BumbleBored I presume that's all ok with you?

OP posts:
Bluelady · 14/10/2018 17:43

I agree with you, OP. Do you actually know what puerile means? Benny Hill is its absolute definition.

reallyreallynow · 14/10/2018 17:46

@Bluelady I believe it's childish? Have I got that wrong? He's was not childish he was misogynistic!

OP posts:
Antigon · 14/10/2018 17:51

@Bluelady is on your side, OP.

Bluelady · 14/10/2018 17:53

He was simple, with humour aimed at those of very low intellect. It was extremely childish. And it has to be seen in the context of its time. I was a young adult at the time and there was far more important misogyny to get upset about - women were paid less, maternity leave didn't exist, women couldn't get mortgages or sign credit agreements. Benny Hill leering at young women paid more than the average wage was the least of our worries.

Bluelady · 14/10/2018 17:54

And, yes, I'm on your side, OP.

reallyreallynow · 14/10/2018 17:54

@Bluelady if you are on my side I apologise!

I'm sorry I misunderstood.

Thanks

Bluelady · 14/10/2018 17:55

It's OK. I thought I was going mad for a minute!

reallyreallynow · 14/10/2018 17:58

@Bluelady no excuse but the whole thing made me livid and not see sense! Thanks

OP posts:
Bluelady · 14/10/2018 18:00

Don't worry. I'm pretty used to being misunderstood on here!

Harrykanesrightsock · 14/10/2018 18:01

Look for ‘the Mash Report’ video women tell men to fuck off. Sends about the right tone.

Whocansay · 14/10/2018 18:19

I would reply 'I assume this was meant to be sent to someone else? I am so embarrassed for you'.

Terrible show, but I love the Bennie Hill theme music

ChilliHobnobs · 14/10/2018 20:50

@reallyreallynow whatever.

Usersname · 14/10/2018 21:16

Benny hill was aired in an era where there were only 3 TV channels, therefore stuff like this most families would watch together. ..like another poster said,as a child they watched it and the smutty stuff went over their heads. Now, it wouldn't even be considered to be aired obviously. No one questioned it as no one ever did back in the day but now we all can comment on the programs we want to watch.
It wasnt meant to be an educational program or something to base real life on. It was just a daft silly old man chasing after women he fancied and nothing more. It wasnt meant to be misogynistic fgs!

TooTrueToBeGood · 15/10/2018 00:23

Sorry, but I fundamentally disagree and i am old enough to remember Benny Hill. I also remember that whenever I attended weddings, dances, parties etc as a youngster it was commonplace to witness young women being groped, pawed and dribbled over by some "daft silly old man" and nobody did a fucking thing because it was just a "daft silly old man". Benny Hill was flying the flag for mysoginists and minimising their behaviour as just "daft silly old men" instead of the predatory abusers and sexual assaulters the are/were in reality.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 15/10/2018 06:16

It wasn't "meant to be misogynistic" anymore than Love thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language were "meant" to be racist.
They just were. Because those traits were accepted by society at large and institutionalised by corporations like TV companies. Didn't make it acceptable then, certainly doesn't make it a rose-tinted nostalgia fest now. I would also say the face that shit like BH always but always has seedy, grubby, old characters groping, that it goes beyond just sexism.
