To ask for board game recommendations?

For my DS 7, loves monopoly, uno and dobble. We also have mousetrap but the setup bit is too boring for him.
He enjoys connect 4 and battle ships.

Are there any new or classic games we're missing? TIA

Rummikub

sparklyfee · 13/10/2018 18:12

Do they still make Downfall? Loved that game.

Could a 5 year old play Carcassonne anyone?

BelfastSmile · 13/10/2018 18:26

Do you have a board game cafe nearby? If so, it could be worth going in there and asking - they know EVERYTHING about board games! Or take your DS at half term and let him try a few games to see what he likes.

We recently discovered (via a board game cafe) Castle Panic, which is a co-operative game (you work together to defeat the game, rather than trying to beat other players). It would be simple enough for a 7yo, and it's fun for adults to play too.

Just jumping on as I’m also looking for recommendations for a Xmas game. That ghost one looks good-did it come with English instructions? The amazon one says it’s in German!
I’ve also been looking at banagrams which gets great reviews.

Beebumble2 · 13/10/2018 18:54

Not a board game but we all love The Emojis card came, it’s a bit like whist, but with hilarious twists and turns.

elspethmcgillicuddy · 13/10/2018 19:09

Camel up is a winner with my 6year old

sliceofcheese · 13/10/2018 19:10

I like coop games for this age as you can help them play more complex and fun games without ruining the game. We have castle panic and forbidden dessert/island.

My 7 year old loves carcassonne and you can simplify it a little eg we didn't play with farmers/abbots until he got the hang of it. I love catan but he can't cope with it yet. Ticket to ride is another favourite. For shorter games we like tortoise and the hare and exploding kittens.

I watched episodes of Wil Wheaton's tabletop on YouTube to see how some of the games I wanted to buy worked. They basically explain the rules and play the game. It's great for seeing how the rules work in practice. I know they've done castle panic, ticket to ride, tortoise and the hare and forbidden dessert. I am pretty sure they've also done carcassonne.

Another vote for Labyrinth it's brilliant.Great for kids who like puzzles and tactics.

Dragonwood is more of a card game but great for kids who enjoy strategy games and magic.

livingdownsouth · 13/10/2018 19:16

Labyrinth definitely!! Also Zeus on the Loose and Rat a tat Cat, I think they're Gamewright games. Simple enough for the children but entertaining enough for the adults.

Happygolucky009 · 13/10/2018 19:18

We love labyrinth and qwirkle ds is 7

Yabbers · 13/10/2018 19:19

Another vote for exploding kittens. Great fun card game.

We love Game of Life and frustration too.

I’d add battleships as a good traditional game.

Our other favourite is Articulate. We’ve had some excellent fun with that one.

Bananagrams, Uno, Cluedo, Go for Broke, Tough Luck

Lululemonade · 13/10/2018 19:50

Jungle speed is brilliant fun

reenon · 13/10/2018 19:55

Mexican train! New fave in our house

charlotte2798 · 13/10/2018 20:19

Splendor is great and lasts about 20 minutes... You have to buy jewels which give you points - first to 15 wins. It has lovely tokens and is often voted one of the best games. Also, we love Camel Up - is really good fun and you just can't predict who's going to win. If you want pure noisy fun then Mousie Mousie is hilarious and all ages can play together.. Even funnier if played after dinner on Christmas Day when the adults have had a few! The kids always win because it's about quick reactions. Carcassonne is more serious but fabulous too. Have fun!

ElBandito · 13/10/2018 20:27

Exploding kittens.

MrsChollySawcutt · 13/10/2018 20:33

Unstable Unicorns

RiverTam · 13/10/2018 20:34

We have both the travel version [US cities) and full version (Europe) of Ticket to Ride - DD was playing the travel version at 7, moved onto the full version at 8.

Frustration

RiverTam · 13/10/2018 20:35

Oh, and not board games but card games - Rat a Tat Cat and Sleeping Queens big hits.

iliketomoveitmoveitMOVEIT · 13/10/2018 20:37

Pass the Bomb junior edition is great.

Frustration - my 8 year old niece nearly wet herself laughing when my DH finally rolled a 6 after a whole game of being stuck on the base - only for her to send him straight back home!

iliketomoveitmoveitMOVEIT · 13/10/2018 20:38

Pass the Pigs is easy too - and dominoes!

FuckCancer · 13/10/2018 20:40

I'm sorry. You should be in Chat

MrsChollySawcutt · 13/10/2018 20:43
