I never used to go around with a water bottle, let alone, grab a cup of coffee

every time I went out.
what is it with people having to be constantly Slurping!

the world cannot cope with all the rubbish this causes.

But people don't only use re-usable bottles.

It's all about status for some.

I've a colleague who insists only on drinking Evian.

Not using single use plastics (induing coffee cups, which are very hard to recycle due to a particular plastic in them) is an easy win we can ake for the environment.

ButAIBUtho · 13/10/2018 15:23

It's not ideal, all these plastic 'reusable' water bottles being churned out.

They are made cheaply. I've already bought three water bottles for the kids each, they all broke within a week.
I've finally found one for one of the kids that has lasted 2 weeks so far.

The broken ones are thick colourful plastic and I've no idea if they can actually be recycled.
It could be making things a lot worse.

BoundByBriars · 13/10/2018 15:25

I always find myself dehydrated when out and about for some reason so always take a (reuseable) bottle out with me in my bag.

I don’t understand coffee on the go though as it’s something I like to sit down and enjoy rather than rush around with.

Not that I ever even notice what people are carrying/drinking in public!

SoyDora · 13/10/2018 15:25

Ah we’ve never had one break. Mine are only 4 and 3 though so not too hard on them.

dailyshite · 13/10/2018 15:26

Global waste is no more a harmless behaviour than the other things on your list, tbf

Brilliant - another one for the list. Not convinced that the OP is actually bothered about that though given that most of his / her posts are focussed on a perceived need for immediate gratification or 'slurping' or consumerism - which is frankly ridiculous.

If you're bothered about global waste, talk about it properly without being a dick.

ButAIBUtho · 13/10/2018 15:26

We're not either. I bought one the same for uni and it broke by the time I was home and covered my books and notes.
Those particular ones were just really badly designed. They cost £3 so more fool me.

AuntBeastie · 13/10/2018 15:27

You are weird to be focusing your ire on hydration rather than on the real issue which is single use plastic. As long as people use flasks and reusable bottles what’s the issue?

dailyshite · 13/10/2018 15:27

ButAIBUthough

Have you seen the metal ones? DS went through a few plastic ones but the metal one has lasted him months so far.

LividAtDolphins · 13/10/2018 15:28

At this point the plastic train has probably built up too much speed for us to feasibly get off, to be honest. There's plastic in almost everything! We get through it like there's no tomorrow.

Investing in new technologies for cleanly and safely disposing of it is probably the better bet now, tbh.

ButAIBUtho · 13/10/2018 15:29

Yes, I got one for DH last Christmas but it cost £20. He loves it and it works well for him.

I can't justify spending that on the kids though, they will just lose them.

Twillow · 13/10/2018 15:29

Cannot enjoy a hot drink standing up let alone walking around a supermarket, I agree it's weird but I wonder if some people see a high street coffee as a status symbol?

KipperTheFrog · 13/10/2018 15:31

I constantly have a bottle of water with me, and one each for my DD's. All reusable bottles, all filled from the tap at home. I get uti's if I don't drink enough. Also trying to get the children into the habit of drinking as they are both awful for it! Rarely carry food though and don't often get takeaway coffee etc.

dailyshite · 13/10/2018 15:32

KaliforniaDreamz

Grin Fair point, so I will just say YABU (are we even in AIBU?)

dailyshite · 13/10/2018 15:33

They're about £5 in Wilkinsons (and I think I got one for £3 in TK Maxx)

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 13/10/2018 15:33

Of all the things in my life that I feel guilty about, that I overanalyse or second guess myself for, that I worry others might judge me for, I can honestly say that not once has it occurred to me that I might be deemed unreasonable for carrying a reusable (non plastic) water bottle with me in my bag when I go out.

Off to beat myself with a big stick.

ButAIBUtho · 13/10/2018 15:34

I will keep an eye out.

I got DH a Sho bottle. I think it must have been a good make.

labazs · 13/10/2018 15:44

i am on tablets which dry my bodies secretions up so i constantly have a dry mouth. if i do not sip water constantly my mouth is so dry i speak like i have had a stroke very upsetting

ladydickisathingapparently · 13/10/2018 15:46

My son (now 16) had kidney stones aged 12. After months of pretty uncomfortable testing and treatment at GOSH and analysis of the stones, all the usual causes (hereditary predisposition, too many tinned drinks, etc) were ruled out and we were told he simply wasn’t drinking enough. So yes, he and his brothers are definitely in the habit of slurping from reusable water bottles while out and about. Sorry you find that annoying but I think I’ll live with the disapproval.

Arrivederci · 13/10/2018 15:50

Little book of calm you doubt sound very laid back about this Grin
I carry a reusable water bottle around to have a drink if I'm thirsty, sue me! It's free, convenient, and has no impact at all on anyone else's day.

LittleBookofCalm · 13/10/2018 15:52

Kidney stones in a 12 year old must be highly unusual Shock

OP posts:
LividAtDolphins · 13/10/2018 15:54

It seems like the OP's frustration is clearly fuelled by unnecessary waste. So personal anecdotes of how you use a reusable bottle or your rare disease that means you need to drink lots are all quite irrelevant, aren't they?

OhFlipMama · 13/10/2018 15:54

I'm pregnant and feel shocking if I don't have water to drink. So I tend to carry it.

Petitepamplemousse · 13/10/2018 15:57

Why do you care so much what other people do? I often treat myself to a take away coffee because it brightens my day. Going by the amount of take out coffee shops it’s hardly an unusual luxury.

Caprisunorange · 13/10/2018 16:01

Ok well as a family of 3 we have consumed 9 drinks on the go today.

X2 cappuccino whilst waiting for D.C. to do music class. 1 fruit juice each as was thirsty.

2 hours later: bottle water, fruit shoot and juicy water (1 per person)

Then another bottle of water which we were offfered in a sofa shop

Reasons being: we were disorganised, I have morning sickness and have contrasting adversion then desperation for something within a few hours. It’s hotter than we expected today. We were out far longer than we expected today. Plans were changed which meant we couldn’t have coffee alone in the cafe.

All avoidable I suppose. If you lived life perfectly, always prepared and going without whatever you don’t have on you. But we, and most people, don’t live like that.

ladydickisathingapparently · 13/10/2018 16:15

In answer to the question aren’t kidney stones in 12 year olds quite rare....relatively rare but becoming more common, and in many cases they are completely preventable by drinking enough fluid. The consultant my DS sees has patients as young as 8.
