Maternity Leave Pay

Thinking of ttc next year, looking over finances and the terms and conditions of my employer's maternity pay - which is confusing!!

One of my friends says her company pays full pay for an entire year, which I'm a bit Shock and Envy at.

AIBU to ask what your maternity pay is like?

@FlotSHAMnJetson it varies from company to company.

Where I work as long as you give your contractual notice period you are not required to repay any additional maternity pay you received on top of SMP.

@greendale17, as stated up thread my company offers 12 months. They have a very attractive benefits package to attract talent, even in the US offices their maternity pay is considerably better than US standard

I am surprised not to see anyone say they get a bonus payment if they go back to work for a minimum time (3-6 months normally) as quite a few of my friends have had that in their package.

Notacluewhatthisis · 14/10/2018 09:59

OddBoots I have never heard of this. Most companies I (or my friends) have worked for, ask for enhanced payments back, if you don't return.

I don't think getting a bonus for going back to work is the norm.

DoveBlue · 14/10/2018 10:09

I think mine was
6wks full
18wks half pay + SMP
3 months stat
3 months unpaid
I went back after 11m then used my accrued leave to work part time for 20wks but was paid full time before dropping to part time officially.

Only 12% of Americans have access to ANY paid leave after having a baby. Only 4 states have ANY state funded maternity pay - In California it's up to 6 weeks at up to 55% of salary.

Unpaid leave of 12 weeks is available to less than 60% of workers in America, many many mothers are forced to either return to work after just a couple of weeks at home recovering from pregnancy and birth, or drop out of the workforce altogether. Ludicrous!

The back to work bonus was scrapped a few years ago, it was definitely a thing but not anymore unfortunately.

JennyBlueWren · 14/10/2018 13:38

3 months full then SMT

cadburyegg · 14/10/2018 14:16

18 weeks full pay
21 weeks SMP
the rest unpaid

The majority of people take the annual leave they have accrued at the end. As is common, if a woman doesnt return then she has to repay anything above SMP.

I think it’s a reasonable deal. I work for a well known big employer.

I am just a PhD student on a grant and I get 100% grant for 6 months, 3 months at 50% grant, then 3 months of nothing.

Interesting read, pretty shocking that United States don't offer any maternity leave at all!
