To want to complain about Wheels on the Bus?

I really don't want to be that parent but...

My DS who is 2 and a half is singing the wheels on the bus with the lyrics 'the mummies on the bus go chatter chatter chatter... etc' and then after that 'the daddies on the bus go stop that noise... etc'

He's picked it up from nursery, who I didn't think would teach these lyrics, they're normally really good and on the ball with things. I hate the stereotype the lyrics are projecting that mummies are silly and daddies are impatient.

I know there's another version with the mummies saying I love you, WIBU to ask nursery to change what they teach?

MrsStrowman · 11/10/2018 20:19

Also prefer wheels on the bus to bloody baby shark, any day of the week

strawberrisc · 11/10/2018 20:19

God help you when they get to Wee Wilie Winkie.

Fucking pervert.

strawberrisc · 11/10/2018 20:19

God help you when the farmers wife mutilates already deformed mice.

strawberrisc · 11/10/2018 20:20

Jack Spratt and his wife. Body shaming.

strawberrisc · 11/10/2018 20:20

My Mum would often gently sing to me about my cradle falling out of a tree.

brighteyeowl17 · 11/10/2018 20:25

Is this for real 🙁 .

Conseulabananahammock · 11/10/2018 20:26

I like the cut of your jib there strawb

Cleanermaidcook · 11/10/2018 20:32

The children at our place tell us who is on the bus and what they say so it depends on the child, it changes every time.
Sometimes the mummies chatter chatter chatter, sometimes they say oo my back, sometimes they read a book, depends on the child who is choosing experience. Sometimes there's a crocodile on the bus that goes snap snap snap, last week the greatest showman was on the bus going whoa, o oo o! (We know what she was watching now 😂)

Downwiththatsortofthing252 · 11/10/2018 20:33

I need to write down all the alternative verses and submit them to the nursery, they'll be singing the song all day.

@strawberrisc I'll see how it goes with this rhyme first, then I'll go after the rest, esp Jack Spratt

@SleepingStandingUp I know, I always found the pig eating roast beef to be odd as well! In Ireland he eats bread and butter

Just gonna leave this here..

OP I am totally with you on this and was having the exact same conversation to a friend earlier. I don't give a shit who thinks I'm being an arse about this. It's exactly this kind of shite that perpetuates sexism and I really hate it.

buttontin · 11/10/2018 20:37

Some bright spark at nursery decided that “eenie meenie mynie mo” (autocorrect wants that to say “Ernie mermaid money mo” Grin) was a suitable rhyme for every morning when the children were doing a particular activity.

There is ALWAYS one child who uses the n-word, always.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/10/2018 20:37

Just teach the kid to tell that's sexist whoever the mummy or daddy does anything. They'll soon give up and stick to baby shark

WhatKatyDidnt · 11/10/2018 20:40

I’m with you OP. Everyday sexism.

Lostnafraid · 11/10/2018 20:44

At my playgroup we sing
People on the bus go chatter chatter chatter
Babies on the bus go wahh waah waah waah.
Mummies/Daddies go shush shush shush to the babies.

We also have a female doctor for miss polly had a dolly!
We like to get suttle positive messages in to them early where I work Grin not giving too many fucks about it being politically correct madness the kids really respond it to
It I find.

Lostnafraid · 11/10/2018 20:44

Subtle! Wtf is suttle?

SinkGirl · 11/10/2018 20:47

Yeah, OP, it’s only a song.
It’s only a t-shirt.
It’s only a magazine cover.
It’s only a joke.
It’s only that boys are better at running than girls.
He’s mean to you because he likes you.
If someone asks for a hug, it’s rude not to hug them.
Don’t be such a girl.
Man up.
That’s more of a boys subject...

And on and on. Never ceases to amaze me that people are so blind to this. If only it were only a song.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 11/10/2018 20:50

You want to hear the Greek equivalent where the fat woman gets in the bus and makes it break down - seriously

I actually don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to update the lyrics a bit though perhaps the versions offered earlier in the thread might be a little too gritty

wonkylegs · 11/10/2018 20:52

Billions of versions of this song just try out different ones with your child and encourage them to come up with their own.
We have 'daddy's play with their phones, play with their phones...."
mainly because I was trying to make a point to DH and DS singing it loudly got through far quicker than me nagging did.
We also have elephants (blow their nose), zebras (stamp their feet) and bogies (blow a raspberry) on our bus at the moment.

minniebow · 11/10/2018 20:55

The cradle out of the tree one! You’ve just triggered a memory there can’t remember how the rest of it goes

Just my tiny opinion but my daughter is 20, and sang wheels on the bus for a couple of years at nursery. And other nursery rhymes- inviting all and sundry for tea cakes and pancakes and lots of things to eat. These ditties have in no way shaped her beliefs.

OrdinaryGirl · 11/10/2018 21:25

YANBU, OP. Fight the good fight, one sexist micro-aggression song at a time! ✊🏼

Esker · 11/10/2018 21:26

The parents on the bus they check their phones, check their phones, check their phones.
