Hi MN. I need your help.

Went for a very precautionary scan at 36+4. I've been admitted and wasn't expecting to be. It's a shock. They are talking about induction but said I might not be ready at 36+4. Desperate for an induction and not a c section. I know nothing about these and haven't had a birth class yet.

Had a cry about not having my water birth. Slowly letting go of the idea.

Hospital bag isn't here/ready. Mum and Dad are away.

Anyone have a successful induction at 36 weeks? Can I refuse a c section if baby looks okay?

I've been admitted due to blood flow being poor from the placenta.

Feeling a bit scared and lost and totally unprepared. I'm not ready for baby yet.

Do you have a midwife or friend that can come and support you?

GoldenR · 11/10/2018 15:51

@IdaBWells DP will be here tonight but he's at work out of the area so can't come any quicker. I'm on my own until about 8/9

Have you had a chance to discuss your options

Aprilislonggone · 11/10/2018 15:54

Op at 35 weeks I was packed for a mini break.

ONE spot of blood!!
1!!
Rang mw as I am rhesus negative - she wanted to send an ambulance!!
Dh drove me in(7am) thinking a quick check up and we could be on our travels.
Scan showed 2 x12 cm blood clots and they booked me into theatre for 12!!
Needle phobice was nearly sick!!
Honestly op, it was fine!! I have had natural births and def wasn't prepared in any form for a csection.
Bonus being I didn't have a single contraction so basically a pain free delivery!
Recovery was fine, I drove within a fortnight, managed to bond and bf no problems at all. He didn't even need special care, a few days under the lights for jaundice but he was fine.
You will both be fine op.

Rufus85 · 11/10/2018 15:55

I was admitted at 34+4 and had an emergency csection at exactly 35, I remember saying but I’m not ready! I had no bag etc but honestly it’s very overwhelming but you will cope! You will have to, write a list of what you need and don’t sweat if it’s not there, my son ended up wearing the hospitals stuff. Hope all goes well for you, just try to take it as it comes and not mourn what you thought the experience would be like xx

Stinkbomb · 11/10/2018 15:56

That's really good that they've picked it up. Presumably they will give steroid injections for the baby's lungs.

My DD2 was born at 36+1 by ELCS and after a short stint in NNU was absolutely fine.

If there are problems with the blood flow from the placenta, the main thing is ensuring baby is ok and doesn't suffer from a lack of oxygen to the brain, so time is of the essence.

Can a friend come and be with you so you aren't on your own?

Villainelle · 11/10/2018 15:57

Honestly, induction is usually only successful if your body is almost ready anyway. But in good news, planned sections are lovely, safe, calm and pain free births. You'll both be fine!

GoldenR · 11/10/2018 15:57

@SnuggyBuggy I'm waiting for the doctor to come and see me now.

And also, don't refuse a section if they are offering you one - they don't give them out for the craic. If they're offering it to you, it's because your baby needs it.

babycatcher411 · 11/10/2018 15:58

We have many many successful inductions at your gestation.
I won’t disagree that the earlier you are the more that chance reduces, but it doesn’t go away completely. It’s not a massive reduction in likelihood.

My advise at this time would be to try and relax as much as you can (easier said than done), eat and drink well, get as much sleep as you can, and mobilise mobilise mobilise. With the exception of when you need to rest of sleep, don’t sit on the bed. Birth ball or walk around. Gravity is you’re friend.
Whenever you have an examination, ask that they do a sweep, at this point in time, there is no real additional risk to that than just what the exam presents itself.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 11/10/2018 15:59

Oh love ❤️ It is a shock.

But it's about your baby, and making sure he or she is delivered safely into the world. You really don't want to mess around with a failing placenta.

Nobody is going to csection a woman for no reason. Nobody wants a baby to be born 4 weeks early for no reason.

There is a good reason here. I found, when I was induced as an emergency both times, it felt better when I sort of submitted to the advice and expertise on offer. Put trust in the people looking after me. Not blindly, but as a general principle.

sproutsplease · 11/10/2018 16:00

I had an emergency c section at 36+4 weeks, it ended up fine OP. Hospitals have really lovely things for DC to wear if needed and the hospital shop will have everything you need short term although if it is like ours it won't be lovely! Don't worry too much.

MemoryOfSleep · 11/10/2018 16:01

Oh, you poor thing. It's scary how quickly these things can happen. But you are in good hands and at least they picked the problem up. Ask for your options and take the time to go through them all, ask all the questions you need to.

You hear a lot these days about giving birth being this magical experience (for me it definitely was not!) but really, it's just a means to an end and all that matters is getting the baby out safely. Once baby is here it won't matter how the birth happened. Best wishes x

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 11/10/2018 16:02

I had my twinnues vaginally at 36 weeks. I suppose the babies got to be in the right position. If you have to have a c section so be it. Your baby is the lost important.

IdaBWells · 11/10/2018 16:04

It's not what you expected OP but as everyone has said the main focus is on a safe delivery for you and your baby. The hospital bag doesn't matter, although you can ask DP is bring it in.

Is this your first birth?

HandlebarTash81 · 11/10/2018 16:04

Planned C-sections can be really sensitively done without impact to breastfeeding or danger to baby.

Induction when baby isn’t quite ready can be very long and largely results in emergency c-sections.

I hope everything is okay OP. Best of luck.

IdaBWells · 11/10/2018 16:05

Everything will be fine you are in safe hands xxx

GoldenR · 11/10/2018 16:17

It's my first yep. Had a rubbish pregnancy and kinda wanted the birth to go a little better. Just so desperate not to have surgery and can't seem to let go of the idea.

oh lovely please try and relax. I had pre eclampsia at 35 weeks. I went for a routine appointment with my consultant and was told to go home and get my things and come straight back in. I remember saying to her "I can't do that. I'm not ready". I was induced twice but nothing happened so I ended up having DD 3 days later by c section. She was perfect and everything was fine. Once you have your baby in your arms that is all that will matter to you.
Take care (very unmumsnetty) x

iggleypiggly · 11/10/2018 16:23

I had a water birth planned, ended up with an induction. I would go with c section any day. It’s not what you planned but you and baby being safe are the most important thing. I was dead against a section but had one 2nd time and it was planned and controlled. Don’t rule it out Flowers

pretendingtowork1 · 11/10/2018 16:26

honestly? a section is a really civilised way to give birth, over 50% of primips will need some sort of intervention. This whole 'natural is always best' mantra does women no favours. You're in good hands - try to relax and remember that the only thing that matters is a healthy you and healthy baby at the end. the birth experience is unimportant. good luck Flowers

partypooper40 · 11/10/2018 16:26

I had an induction for 1 and a planned CS for 2. Definitley take the planned CS over the induction any day. Don't reject the idea of a CS out of hand - if they are recommending it it will be the best thing for the baby.

Bluntness100 · 11/10/2018 16:28

If the doctors want to do a c section let them op. What matters here is you and your baby being healthy.

And good luck, you're about to have a baby!

mamansnet · 11/10/2018 16:28

36+4 may sound early, but you're only 3 days from being full term. The baby is practically ready to arrive! Try to relax now, the doctors know what they're doing. You're in the best possible place and we're all here to hold your hand!

WeeDoughball · 11/10/2018 16:29

I was induced (drip) at 35 weeks due to PE and it was a really good birth. Less than 4 hours from drip to birth, gas and air and then some diamorphine at the end (shouldn't have bothered but didn't realise it was nearly done). I had the steroid injections which helped baby. DS2 was 36+6 and didn't need the steroids. Good luck, hope all goes well.
